Language used

The article is in need of extensive copy editing due to the used of nonstandard English. Due to the nature of the article, I will assume it was written by Malaysian natives using local Manglish?

To allow native speakers & users who's native language is not English to not become confused, could editors please use standard Commonwealth English when adding content to the page. Standard English is the standard throughout Wikipedia, and that standard needs to be maintained. Uamaol (talk) 23:10, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Images with and without hijab

@ShyAlpaca482 and Fandi89: I'm going to copy our conversation from User talk:ShyAlpaca482 because I think it is an issue that may come up again with respect to this article.

For your information, we can't use Neelofa's old pictures to illustrate her articles as she is now wears hijab or niqab as I described in my previous edit summary. I think you can ask GRuban (talk · contribs) for help to find a photos of her wears hijab on YouTube. Thank you in advance.–Fandi89 (talk) 11:29, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Actually, user GRuban disagrees with that. She wears niqab now, but that doesn't mean we need to pretend she always did. After Caitlin Jenner transitioned to female, we didn't delete all male-presenting images of Bruce Jenner from that article. Since she was notable both before and after, we should show pictures of both before and after: for both people. There is an argument for making the most prominent photo after (as female for Caitlin Jenner, and with niqab for Neelofa), but we should have pictures of before as well. --GRuban (talk) 14:12, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Now back to me. As Fandi89 suggested, I did search for freely licensed YouTube images of Neelofa in hijab, and uploaded two to Wikimedia Commons that can be used here. I am not sure which would be better for the infobox. One is higher resolution, and more recent, but, frankly, has a terrifying neon yellow mascara. Judgment call of editors here, I am not a Neelofa expert (though I did write much of MeleTOP and Nabil Ahmad). --GRuban (talk) 14:18, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Out of curiosity, are there any religious or similar issues with posting historical images of Neelofa without hijab? I will respect them if there are. However, as GRuban mentioned, there may be a vested interest to depict Neelofa both before and after the choice to wear one as she was notable both before and after. The thing about religious standards is that more religious people are often eager to enforce them on less religious people. So: yes, I am sure there are plenty of religious people that will object. Then again, some of them will object to any photos of any women without hijab. Some of these objections have even made their way into law. In Thailand it is against the law to say anything bad about the royal family. In China it is a crime to defame the revolution. In Poland it is a crime to say that Poles were complicit in the Holocaust. In France, in Turkey, in Iran, it is a crime to... and so forth. We've got hosts of articles about it, Category:Censorship by country. We simply can't obey them all, we'd have no encyclopedia left. We try to avoid offending people unnecessarily, but yet we try to write an encyclopedia: "the sum of the world's knowledge". Photos of a famous actress and television host are rather important parts of the article about her. --GRuban (talk) 15:09, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Look at the edits we got just today. One minute apart, from the same IP, clearly the same person. (Photos of Neelofa not wearing the niqab or hijab SHOULD NOT be on this page anymore!) they write, and remove a photo. Then (Photos of Neelofa not wearing niqab SHOULD NOT be on this page anymore!) and ... removes a photo of her in hijab. This is not a person who follows what they themselves wrote exactly one minute ago. This is a person who, given an inch, takes a yard. --GRuban (talk) 13:49, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
