Nenmara Vallanghi Vela is the most prestigious festival of the village of Nenmara, Palakkad. it is a festival where people come together irrespective of religion, cast and colour. it starts in the Malayalam month of 'Meenam' and ends within 21 days. The two villages Nenmara and Vallanghi will be in a competition to put forward their talents in the festival. The festival has a mythological background where it is believed that lord Shiva goes to see his daughter Kali ( Nellikulangara bagavathy ) from Vallanghi to Nenmara. the festival starts away with 'Kuri idal' inviting people for the Vela which is carried out by the tribal groups of the village. This is followed by dance form 'Kanniar kali' played by different groups from different people. this is continued till first of April. On second of aAril there will be 'Thala poli' or women walking in groups with lamps in there hands. on this day the whole village will be alive and will not sleep . They will be busy watching 'Ana pandal' and 'Ana chamayam' . On third of April , or the day of Vela, there will be about 12 elephants from both the sides of the village who will be dressed and will meet at a ground. There will be musicians playing Panchavadyam. The day is followed by Veddikettu or fireworks for which the festival is famous for. On the last day or April fourth the festival end with Pandi melam or the music of the poor or low cast.
Traditionally when cast system existed in India, Vela was a time when the lower cast could see their god and enjoy. Now the festival is a time when people forget all the differences in them and come together. This a day when no one is allowed to starve and the needy is helped by others. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.96.77.15 (talk) 17:34, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
