Sources contradict on year of film and other details

edit

The article says Nireekshana is a 1986 film and is a remake of Yathra (1985). However, two sources contradict this and claim that Yathra is a remake of Nireekshana, which was made in 1982.

  • Malayalam eMagazine says Yathra is a remake of the 1982 Telugu film Nireekshana:[1] Here's the full quote (emphasis added):

Yathra is a 1985 film directed by Balu Mahendra, and starring Mammootty and Shobana. It is a remake of the 1982 Telugu film Nireekshana, directed by Balu Mahendra himself, and starring Bhanu Chander and Archana. The film tells a fictional story but built upon the human rights violations by the Police and the prison authorities in India during the nationwide emergency of 1975-1977, when the fundamental rights of the citizens were suspended. The movie is an adaptation of the 1977 Japanese classic "The Yellow Handkerchief". The film was a commercial success. The film stamped the authority of Mammootty in 1985 crossing 200 days.

  • Similarly, The Hindu says this (emphais added):[2]

Balu Mahendra’s Nireekshana (1982), a Telugu film which he remade as Yathra in Malayalam and dubbed into Tamil as Kanne Kalaimaane, is inspired by the Emergency’s human rights violations. In Yathra, Mammootty plays a forest officer who is mistaken for a Naxalite, arrested and jailed for many years.

  • While not a reliable source, I see that IMDb also has the film as having been released in 1982.[3][unreliable source]
  • However, Onmanorama, in article about a song, supports that claim that Nireekshana is a remake of Yatra:

In 1986, 'Thumbi' was heard in Telugu, in 'Nireekshana'. It was a remake of Balu Mahendra's Malayalam movie 'Yatra'.

  • Another source cited in the article cites awards given in 1986 for Nireekshana to Balu Mahendra for cinematography and to Archana for a special jury award.[4] This would seem to imply that Nireekshana was a 1986 film. However, the source cited here is a blog from L. Venugopal hosted on blogspot.com. Generally, blogs are not considered reliable unless the author is a subject-matter expert, or they are published through blogspot by a reliable media organization. I do not know how reliable L. Venugopal is. Thee is another PDF I cannot read that also purportedly verifies the 1986 awards.

This could use some further investigation by other editors to resolve these discrepancies or, at least, to note the discrepancies in the article if they cannot be resolved.

A couple of other notes:

  1. I could find no information to substantiate the cast listing.
  2. This article was created by a sockpuppeteer (Tarunq (talk · contribs)) in November 2020.
