Improving the article

Me and MICHAEL CODY love nudist!!! I am trying to improve the article. As I am not an expert on the subject it would be helpful if any regular visitors to or operators of such places that can offer some guidance or additions to the article. I've started by moving the article to "nudist community" from "nude community" because I did find any real use of the latter term when searching Google. While I understand that some may find the term nudist improperly describes native/indigenous groups/communities that still live mostly or fully nude as their ancestors did, since most of the article does and will cover nudist/naturalist communities, resorts. camps, clubs, etc., I felt that the article should under the current title. Secondly, I tried to provide better definitions of terms used for nudist communities or similar places though I myself am not an expert regarding how these terms are used. As I understand it, the term Nudist/naturalist community implies nudists living their on a more or less permanent basis while terms like resort, camp, or park often refer to places that cater to nudist vacationers though they may also allow day visitors. Nudist/naturalist clubs tend lack accommodations for overnight stays and thus are for day visitors only. Is this generally how such terms are used in the nudist/naturist world?

• With the greatest respect, I think you should get some experience before you attempt to write about, an area that is open to erroneous stereotyping, and deeply held POVs. I limit my comments because I can only sensibly talk from a european perspective. However, in the interests of Wiki, can I offer you a few pointers. When I use the word 'never' I mean Never in a European Context. I do not use the word 'Nudist' as I have never heard it used other than in an uninformed derogatory manner.
• The word 'Colony' is never used nowadays- I believe that its origin is as a direct translation of the French Word- Colonie, as used in the context 'Colonie des Vacances', a unique french institution, where families would go to the seaside and stay in chaletted accomodation, and be provided with centrally cooked meals. This was sometimes provided by inland towns as a way of providing their inhabitants with a 'healthy seaside holiday- with guarenteed good food' at a subsidised price. I have visited one of these. More commonly were the Colonies des Vacances for Children, expanded after WW2, as a means of getting children who had endured travel restrictions out into the country- these were regulated and provided dawn to dusk supervision and entertainment. I have worked in two of these. They are not so popular today, but do fill a space in the long summer school holiday. A provider was the UFCV. There was never any connection with Naturisme.

Here are some ideas I have for improving the article:

• Explain in more detail the different types of nudist communities, resorts, clubs, etc. such as live-in communities vs. vacation resorts vs. day clubs.
• Provide some history of the existence of clubs in various places such as Europe, United States, Australia, Etc. and mention some of the the most well-known modern resorts or clubs.
• Provide info on the organizations that represent nudist resorts/clubs such as the "American Association for Nude Recreation".
• Provide some descriptions of what recreational facilities clubs/resorts may offer such swimming pools, tennis courts, performance stages, etc.
• Discuss other activities offered by some nudist resorts/clubs such as beauty contests, variety shows, dances, sports activities, etc. Also discuss how some resorts have discontinued certain practices such a Beauty contests or clothing-free dances due to various concerns.
• Differentiate between family camps/resorts vs. adults-only resorts/clubs
• Discuss the controversy over family resorts where nude children allowed including the controversy regarding children/teen nudist summer camps where parents are absent.
• Discuss the varying policies regarding single men at resorts/clubs and the issue of clothing optional vs. nudity required.
• For any above topics discussed in detail in other nudism/nudity related articles a summery could be added here with a link to the other article could added.

I find the time I will added some stuff I recently found on the web but I welcome others to jump right in with some of my ideas for improving this article (or your own).

Here are some ideas I have for improving the article:

• Explain in more detail the different types of nudist communities, resorts, clubs, etc. such as live-in communities vs. vacation resorts vs. day clubs.
  • There are no nudist communities. Problem with the word. What you need to discuss are, landed club sites, accepting visitors with INF card, accepting members only (in members friends), all naturist sites are family orientated,
    • I was under the impression that their are places/communities which nudists/naturists live together year round. I have to investigate this further.
• Provide some history of the existence of clubs in various places such as Europe, United States, Australia, Etc. and mention some of the the most well-known modern resorts or clubs.
  • Repeats Naturism article
    • Their could be at least a summary of what the naturism article says on the history of clubs/resorts with a link to that article.
• Provide info on the organizations that represent nudist resorts/clubs such as the "American Association for Nude Recreation".
  • the INF Guide is the place to start
• Provide some descriptions of what recreational facilities clubs/resorts may offer such swimming pools, tennis courts, performance stages, etc.
  • There are 47 major 'Holiday Sites' in France alone- biennially these sites send details for the INF guide. On visiting them you will find they are out of date. Wiki is not a gazeteer. This is an opportunity for commercial spam.
    • I was thinking more along the lines of a generic description of the types of services and recreation clubs often provide and not so much descriptions of specific clubs.
• Discuss other activities offered by some nudist resorts/clubs such as beauty contests, variety shows, dances, sports activities, etc. Also discuss how some resorts have discontinued certain practices such a Beauty contests or clothing-free dances due to various concerns.
  • Beauty contests is totally contrary to Naturism- only a voyeurist would imagine that this could happen. You seem to have a stereotypical idea of the use of clothes. 'Nudité integrale' is only requested (not demanded because that would be contrary to naturist principles) in swimming pools and on beaches, discos are usually an opportunity to dress up, an I expect that peer pressure would mitigate against non-clothed dancers. No one stays unclothed, when the temperature drops in the evening, or where protective clothing is needed such as in a 5 a side football session. In the bar at lunch time, most will be unclothed- unless the sun is too strong, when a tee shirt will be donned. There are mixed couples- one clothed/one not. There is a strong taboo about staring, and in the last five years anyone carrying a camera may be challenged. Teens are more likely to be seen clothed than adults or young children- this is accepted.
    • I know that in the past some clubs offered beauty contests, nude dances, etc. (based on old nudist photographs and nudist magazine articles.) but stopped that practice due to various concerns. I was thinking this issue could mentioned in this article. I'm fully aware that how some activities at naturist clubs are performed with cloths on. Also with regard to the issue of camera use, it is my understanding the issue is a more recent issue, at least in the U.S. due to concerns how the photographs might be used, especially those featuring minors. In the 50's/60's, for example, I don't think the issue of cameras was as big a deal. The subject of photography restrictions deserves at least a line or two in the article.
• Differentiate between family camps/resorts vs. adults-only resorts/clubs
  • All resorts are family oriented. Overt sexuality is taboo. The principal problem seems to be outsiders that either wander onto open beaches or onto the site. Large sites employ a pass system and security personal to remove outsiders that make the residents uneasy. There are some landed sites that have a reputation of being 'non-family'. The Naturist movement would pass on any information of 'wrongful' acts to the police, with a puritanical vigour.
    • In the U.S., I've heard that their clubs that to consider themselves nudist clubs don't allow minors to visit. I do not whether all such places tolerate sexual acts in their public areas though I've heard some due.
• Discuss the controversy over family resorts where nude children allowed including the controversy regarding children/teen nudist summer camps where parents are absent.
  • By definition, children are allowed. Where is this alleged Teen Summer Camp- not in Europe.
    • Their seems to be some differences between European clubs and some U.S. clubs. I think we need to discuss in the article the issue of accreditation and how different U.S./European nudist/naturist organizations accredit various resorts. Their seems to be some non-accredited resorts operating that don't meet the standards of these accrediting organizations. Also, the teen/youth summer camp controversy is/was a U.S. controversy that centered around some family nudist resorts in the U.S. that offered short duration nudist summer camps for teenagers on club property. Because these camps did not have the teens supervised by their parent, just as is standard for normal summer camps, and their was concern by some politicians in Virgina and Florida that a bunch of naked youths together could lead to innapropriate sexual activipedophiles, ephebophiles, and pedorests where were or could in the future work at the nudist summer camps and pray on the teenagers. • Discuss the varying policies regarding single men at resorts/clubs and the issue of clothing optional vs. nudity required.
  • This has been discussed at landed clubs, who can have arcane membership requirements, but provided the man has an INF card, there is not an issue. As most activity is family orientated, the single can feel very lonely. It is not a place to meet a partner.
• For any above topics discussed in detail in other nudism/nudity related articles a summery could be added here with a link to the other article could added.

I have attempted to correct a few points, but really to do the job properly would involve such deep cuts that there would be nothing left. I propose deletion. I will revisit in 14 days and unless there is anything to the contrary- I will take the talk page to Naturism, rescue the links and delete the rest. ClemRutter 20:41, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
