Should this be at Velha Goa or Old Goa. I noticed the Slovenian, German, and Czech all had it under Velha not Old Goa. Falphin 01:17, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Amazing Feat

The physical removal of the Palace of the Adil Shah from Old Goa to Nova Goa (Pangim) was truly a remarkable feat, as the article says: "The viceroy then moved the palace of Adil Sha to Panaji". To the best of my knowledge, the Paco de Idalcao in Nova Goa was always where it is.

But what is "In 1835 after religious suppression the city was virtually deserted" supposed to mean?

The article also needs to clarify that there are 2 separate "ghost cities" of Old Goa, called Goa Velha and Velha Goa respectively. Goa Velha is the first city of Goa, to the south of the present site of Old Goa. Old Goa or Velha Goa is the city founded by Arab refugees from Bhatkal and conquered first by Yusuf Adil Shah I ("Idalcao") from the Raja of Belgaum, a feudatory of Vijayanagaram, and then by Albuquerque from Yusuf Adil Shah I.

Goa Velha, Velha Goa

These are two different places. Kindly note the mix-up that's happening between them. A friend wrote:

• Old Goa is Portuguese for Goa Velha as well as for Velha Goa.Goa Velha and Velha Goa are two distinct places in Goa. Goa Velha is actually an 'ancestor' of Velha Goa. Formerly Govakapattna or Govapuri, Goa Velha was the capital of the Kadambas and, later, of the Bahamanis, who finally transferred their capital to Ela, now Velha Goa. Yes, Velha Goa. The Central Government Postal Department and a number of State Depts. do not know it by any other name, till date. Curiously, 'Old Goa' has found favour with the Panchayat, the Police Station and ... the general public. Understandable.
• Both Goa Velha and Velha Goa are known for a procession peculiar to the place, which has, respectively, only one more parallel in Europe: the Procession of the Franciscan Saints (Santanchem Pursanv) in Goa Velha and the Procession of 'Capas Magnas' (Xempeanchem Pursanv) in Velha Goa.
• I have just noticed that the Old Goa entry in the Wikipedia is routed to 'Goa Velha,' in more than one language, but not in French yet ...

Yes Goa Velha and Old Goa are completely different places.. I am amazed to see this discrepancy in WIKI ..I was brought up at Goa Velha which is roughly 10 km on NH17 from Panjim to Margao Highway ..Whereas Old Goa or Velha Goa lies roughly 10 km away from Panjim on NH4A which goes towards Ponda.

All the churches mentioned here are at Old Goa or Velha Goa ..Goa Velha has St Andrews' S Church ..Old name for Goa Velha was Govapuri during the Kadamba rule ......Sujit K Sept 17th 2008

Old Goa is the site of the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral and numerous other historically, culturally, and Christian religiously important structures and institutions. It is a World Heritage Site. map

Goa Velha is a village somewhat to the south. St. Andrew's church is its parish church.map It is famous for its yearly 'procession of saints'

Velha Goa is the portuguese name for Old Goa, but this name is not commonly used today. It is rare enough to cause ambiguity as to which of the places it refers to.

So, Velha Goa should be a redirect to Old Goa, with a clear note that the person may also be searching for Goa Velha.

For the record, Old Goa is known in Konkani as Vhoddlem Goem, Saibachem Goem, and less commonly, Pornem Goem and Adhlem Goem. It's a very important place, so it's got a lot of titles!
