editAs to my understanding, "Dräper man en utländsk man, skall man inte bannlysas utan förvisas till sin ätt." does not translate to "If someone slays a foreigner, he shall not be banished and have to flee to his clan." but rather "[...] he shall not banished but banished to his clan."
This is nonsense. However, "återförvisas" instead of "förvisas" in the modern Swedish text would make more sense, as the meaning would be "If a man slays a foreigner, he shall not be banished but referred back to his clan", implied that any punishment or lack thereof would be up to the accuseds clan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.253.74.52 (talk) 04:30, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
According to Noreen's grammar, Old Swedish begins in the 9th century, not the 13th
editIn his Altnordische grammatik II. Altschwedische grammatik mit einschluss des altgutnischen, Adolf Noreen defines altschwedisch (‘Old Swedish’) as ‘die schwedische sprache von ihren anfängen [...] bis zur reformation’. He divides its history into three periods:
1. runenschwedisch (first half of the 9th century to ca. 1225)
2. klassisches altschwedisch or frühaltschwedisch (ca. 1225 to ca. 1375)
3. mittelschwedisch or spätaltschwedisch (ca. 1375 to ca. 1525)
It seems likely that the practice of defining Old Swedish as only the last two of these periods is due to a misunderstanding that the term Old Swedish refers only to those periods that (can) have Old Swedish in their name, i.e. Classical Old Swedish and Late Old Swedish. The fact that an alternative name for Classical Old Swedish is Early Old Swedish may have contributed to such a misunderstanding.
Isn't Noreen's grammar the standard grammar of Old Swedish? Shouldn't we follow its definition of the term? Ardalazzagal (talk) 22:47, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
In Swedish, I found Gideon Danell's Svensk språkhistoria i sammandrag för gymnasier och seminarier, which assigns the term fornsvenska to the period ‘omkr. 800—1526’ and writes: ‘Inom fornsvenskan brukar man urskilja tre underperioder: runsvenska, klassisk fornsvenska och yngre fornsvenska.’ (p. 21).
