Getting started

edit

I'm just getting started in this project and it is my intention to provide a good Wikipedia article for every silent Our Gang short ever made. The project is extremely difficult, however, because of the lack of information available. I would welcome some friendly help in identifying the actors and actresses who appeared in these delightful old films. Perry Hotter (talk) 13:02, 23 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

CONCERNING THE LINE BREAKS
I kinda like those breaks, so I put them back in. Thank you, though, to whomever it was that removed them. If you can suggest a better way to improve the esthetics, I'm willing to listen.Perry Hotter (talk) 01:26, 20 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Unknown Child Actor

edit

At first I thought the tall boy with glasses is Lincoln Stedman but comments from other researchers indicates otherwise. If anyone can identify this actor, your help will be greatly appreciated.Perry Hotter (talk) 21:13, 4 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

The reason some of us thought it was Steadman was because Maltin and Bann listed him in the cast. But conversation with the owner of The Lucky Corner Website has convinced me that this is not Stedman. In fact, the owner of the Lucky Corner is almost convinced that it is Dick Cartwright, Peggy Cartwright's brother.Perry Hotter (talk) 17:39, 22 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Help Is On the Way

edit

I have the complete version of this film, so I've added a few bits of info where I saw fit. I have no experience editing Wikipedia, so bear with me. Antifrodis (talk) 04:11, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Antifrodis - Thanks! I viewed the other Our Gang films that were supposed to feature Lincoln Stedman and thought I identified the tall boy in each of them. But the owner of The Lucky Corner website assures me that I am incorrect. He says the boy is not Stedman. I really thought I was on to something, but now I'm at a loss. I do not own the complete film. All I have is a DVD version. Also, don't be embarrassed about beng a Wikipedia novice. So am I when it comes down to it. I look forward to your input.Perry Hotter (talk) 22:02, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Another thing - You need to create a User Page. That way other users can click on your name and go right to it.Perry Hotter (talk) 22:04, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Perry - Always trust the "owner of the Lucky Corner". He's a friend of mine and he knows his stuff. Glad to know you're motivated to take on this project. I have a more complete collection of Our Gang silent films than most people, so I'm happy to help. I created a User Page, by the way. Antifrodis (talk) 23:00, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Antifrodis - Great! Now you can start adding information on your User Page so other users can know stuff about you. I created the Our Gang User Box myself, so feel free to copy it. And when you add stuff to a discussion page, you can add a colon to make another indention, like this paragraph. You can use 3 colons to respond to this paragraph.Perry Hotter (talk) 13:47, 7 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Carlene Culpepper

edit

Antifrodis - I'm confused here. I don't have the scene where she shows the newspaper article, nor the scene where her cat tangles with the monkey. So if she isn't the lady seen with Peggy Cartwright at the country estate, who is that?Perry Hotter (talk) 14:01, 7 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Perry - the character's name is Caroline, not Carlene. It is a misprint in the Maltin/Bann book. The Lucky Corner page hasn't been updated with that info yet as I only recently acquired this complete version of the film. There is a shot of her business card in the film and her name is clearly Caroline, without question. I checked into it and the character is indeed played by Helen Gilmore. Helen appears in other Our Gang shorts, and I compared footage and it is the same person. However, we do not know who the woman is with Peggy. I believe there is also another maid at the beginning of the film that is also unaccounted for. I need to watch the film again to confirm this. Also, the version of the film that you have is most likely a combination of the Mischief Makers episode "The Outing" edited together with some footage from a 16mm Exclusive Films shortened version of the film (who's title escapes me). The Mischief Makers episodes have NO original intertitles, whereas your version of this film should contain some. The version of the film that I have is only missing the opening titles and credits. Otherwise it appears to be complete, with all the original intertitles and several scenes not in your version. I'm guessing that you own a dvd set with 71 Our Gang silents, correct? Antifrodis (talk) 01:28, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Actually, the set I have is an 8 DVD set with 48 Silent Our Gang episodes. I'd like to have the one with 71 episodes though. I believe there were a total of 88 silents, including the lost ones. The copy I have of One Terrible Day is indeed called "The Outing," so you are probably correct about it being the edited Mischief Makers version. I counted a total of 9 intertitles, with most of them being in the bull fighting scene. It is supposed to be 15 minutes, 19 seconds, but I timed it at 15:15. One scene I know I'm missing, not counting the ones you mentioned, is just before the kids come in after washing up for lunch. Their faces are covered with powder, but there is no scene which shows them powdering their faces. Concerning the lady with Peggy, I added her to the list as a 3rd Unknown Actress. Thank you for your help, I believe we can get this information together and have it preserved in Wikipedia if we keep plugging at it.Perry Hotter (talk) 14:17, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I just discovered something. My 8 DVDs are numbered 12 through 19. So they are probably part of the 71 episode set you're referring to.Perry Hotter (talk) 14:36, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Antifrodis - Guess what? I just bought the 71 silent episode set off of eBay. Obviously, they won't be of the quality that you and the "owner of the LC" have, but at least I will have a more nearly complete collection. One episode on the DVD collection is "Our Gang." I hope it's more complete than the You Tube version I have now.Perry Hotter (talk) 14:43, 9 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

WP:FILMS Assessment

edit

Per the request left at WP:FILMS Assessment department, I am reviewing this article. For this article to reach C class a few minor changes should be made. Expand the lead to better summarize the article. Consider removing some of the cast images, or moving them all to the right so the text is not sandwiched between them. It would be helpful to include a section or a few statements somewhere that the film is in the public domain. If possible see if there are any other relevant sections that can be included within the article. Once these are implemented, feel free to upgrade to C or if you'd like me to take another look, either leave another message at the Assessment department or my talk page. --Happy editing! Good job improving it further. I have assessed it at C, but it definitely has a long way to go before reaching B class. I would recommend making the following changes:
  • The lead only needs to be about two paragraphs. If there is any information currently there that is not mentioned elsewhere in the article, then move it to an appropriate section. No new information should be introduced in the lead that isn't mentioned elsewhere.
  • For all of the images in the cast section, consider making one or two composite images so that the screenshots don't take up so much space. That way you can still keep all of the images.
  • I'd drop the crew section. Usually that's only beneficial to include if there are significant details to mention about their involvement in the production of the film.
  • Try and merge the technical details into the production section.
  • The next major step to take with the article is to pursue additional sources to expand and cite the article.
Again, good work, and if you need help with any of these, please let me know. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 06:49, 18 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
