The basic rivet set machine tooling consists of: The Driver or Stem, jaws or pockets and the anvil. This article explains how they should function and trouble shooting. The driver is usually made of A2 ( air hardening) heat treated high grade steel for durability and wear. The end of the driver is machined to the head diameter of the rivet and the contour of the rivet head.If the form is not precise, it will leave a ring mark on the head of the rivet. An easy check can be done by using a marker pen on the form and use a rivet head rotating it in the form, the rivet should show a proper mark covering the full surface of the rivet head. The jaws or pockets are made of oil hardened tool steel, the pockets receive the rivet from the rivet track, holding it firmly slightly above the work piece to be riveted. The pockets have a spring steel arm attached to them to grip the rivet and hold it to the work piece. If the tension on the pocket spring are not properly adjusted, they cause the rivet to be out of alignment with the anvil pin, and can damage the anvil pin. The Anvil, forms the roll of the rivet. It is made of oi hardened steel and the pin made of A2 steel. The anvil has four parts. the anvil body, anvil adjustment nut, internal spring and anvil pin. the spring forces the anvil pin through the work piece to be fastened. The end of the pin is machined to roll the rivet end. If the the pin form is set too low, or too high to the form in the end of the anvil body, will cause the wall of the rivet to buckle, thus not fastening the work piece properly. their are two types of rivet shank rolls, the standard and star clinch. The star clinch used to fasten skate blades to skate boot. The star clinch anvil pin end is machined assembled in the anvil body, using a ball nose end mill and a dividing head, then it is heat treated and reassembled. For further rivet set machine trouble shooting, I will edit more advise. Rivet-master (talk) 01:44, 14 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
