Request add explanation in article name / hatnote

edit

Could the article name be modified to add an explanation? Tadmur (This article is about the modern city of Palmyra. See Palmyra for the ancient city.) To reduce confusion about the 2 articles? Thank you, --Jcardazzi (talk) 19:20, 20 August 2015 (UTC)jcardazziReply

I added a hatnote to help clarify the confusion. --Al Ameer (talk) 20:44, 20 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

If the modern city is usually known as Palmyra (certainly normally referred to as such in reports on the Syrian civil war) then shouldn't the article title be moved? I realise this raises problems about how we differentiate it from the ancient city. PatGallacher (talk) 23:30, 13 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I agree. The present situation is highly unsatisfactory. It is quite clear that both the ancient and modern cities are referred to as 'Palmyra' in English, just as both cities are 'Tadmur' in Arabic. All recent coverage has referred to 'Palmyra', not 'Tadmur. I would suggest Ancient Palmyra for the ancient site, and Palmyra for the modern city. RGloucester 22:20, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

The result of the move request was: moved as proposed. The consensus is that the principal topic should be retained for the ancient city, and the current city listed as Palmyra (modern). (non-admin closure) Bradv 14:01, 1 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

TadmurPalmyra (modern) – As the article acknowledges itself, this city is normally known as "Palmyra" in English, it is normally referred to as such in news reports on the Syrian civil war, Wikipedia articles on this conflict refer to "Palmyra offensives". We should avoid recentism, on balance the ancient city is more important, but I suggest we follow the example of Sparta (modern). PatGallacher (talk) 23:07, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Maybe: The suggestion in the section above (renaming the article about the old city: Ancient Palmyra) is highly problematic. No academic, new or old, source would have the newly built city first in mind when mentioning the name "Palmyra". The new city took its name from the old one, and the "ancient" one have the right to its name without any additions such as "ancient". The arrangement of Sparta and new Sparta seems more appropriate.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 05:40, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

That's fine, if you want to make ancient Palmyra the primary topic. I'm not certain that it is, given the nature of the recent conflict, but I'll support "the arrangement of Sparta and new Sparta" for the sake of sorting this out. It is quite clear that the city, old or new, is called Palmyra in English. RGloucester 15:13, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes and no Pat. Tadmur is the official name for this new city and the only reason for why this new city is even mentioned in world news is because of its connection to the proper historic one. But, if you move it to Palmyra (modern), I wont object.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 03:22, 18 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Merge or rename. The article is useless... --Nouill (talk) 22:07, 19 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
