Mother Teresa Sarani → Park Street, Kolkata – Per WP:COMMONNAME, the street has need renamed in the early 2000s, and the current title is not popular. Amartyabag TALK2ME 09:27, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

- Support. Park Street is overwhelmingly more common name.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:39, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- Support per reasons given by the nom. Secret of success (talk) 13:00, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Support I love Mother Teresa, but Park Street is Park Street! (Note to SLawsonIII below: Wikipedia prefers common names over official names. cf. Sixth Avenue (Manhattan), officially known as Avenue of the Americas). --regentspark (comment) 11:06, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
- Support As per WP:Official names, another example is Bangalore (not the official name of the city). --Ekabhishektalk 04:08, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

edit- Any additional comments:
- I'll vote after more thought. I accept that the 'old name' is more popular, but I think Wikipedia Naming Conventions prioritize Official, Modern names. As the Naming Conventions make clear: "For an article about a place whose name has changed over time, context is important. For articles discussing the present, use the modern English name (or local name, if there is no established English name), rather than an older one." Shouldn't the official name be used in this instance? SLawsonIII (talk) 22:12, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- The context for using the above rationale is needed when the name has changed over a long period of time and the Modern name is different from the old name and the new name has been well recognised. "For example, we have articles called Istanbul, Dubrovnik, Volgograd and Saint Petersburg, these being the modern names of these cities, although former names (Constantinople, Ragusa, Stalingrad or Leningrad) are also used when referring to appropriate historical periods (if any), including such article names as Battle of Stalingrad and Sieges of Constantinople; not to mention separate articles on Constantinople and Byzantium on the historic cities on the site of modern Istanbul - or part of it".
A general rule is that, for "the title: When a widely accepted English name, in a modern context, exists for a place, we should use it. This often will be a local name, or one of them; but not always. If the place does not exist anymore, or the article deals only with a place in a period when it held a different name, the widely accepted historical English name should be used. If neither of these English names exist, the modern official name, in articles dealing with the present, or the modern local historical name, in articles dealing with a specific period, should be used.".
In context of the current article, the name "Park Street" was changed to "Mother Teresa Sarani" (Sarani in Bengali means a road or a lane) only in early 2000s; a period of about 10 years could not change the wide use of the name of the road which existed by "Park Street" for more than 200 years. The article deals with the road in both modern and historical context and its widely accepted English name exists, ie "Park Street".
