Hello. The Pinehurst Harness Track is owned and operated by the Village of Pinehurst (local government). I am the Communications Specialist for the Village of Pinehurst. It has come to my attention that the Wiki article for the track (1) has the wrong name for our facility - it is the "Pinehurst Harness Track", not "Pinehurst Race Track". Also, much of the description is lacking and the photo used is TERRIBLE. The Harness Track is a business that relies on renting our stalls and that photo is terrible advertisement for our facility. I can supply much better photos and a complete history of the Pinehurst Harness Track can be found on our website: www.pinehurstharness.org or [1].

If you have any questions, you can reach me mholt@vopnc.org or 910-295-8645.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Misslholt (talkcontribs) 13:42, 13 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello, and thank you for your request. Since Wikipedia's normal practices discourage editors from reaching out to other editors by telephone, this article talk page has been provided for editors as the best place to communicate on issues concerning the article. The major issues from your request are addressed below:

  1. The name change: This article concerns the property placed under the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The original registration document describes the property as the Pinehurst Race Track or Pinehurst Training Track.
    1. The fact that one facility is named differently from the rest of the property ("the Wiki article for the track has the wrong name for our facility") would not normally change the name of an article if that article concerns the entire breadth of the property, which in this case is shown on this map.
    2. However, a cursory search of Google reveals plenty of references to the Pinehurst Harness Track (we'll call this the Harness Track variant of the name) but curiously, almost no references to Pinehurst Race Track (we'll call this the Race Track variant). Thus, it appears that at some point after the registration occurred in 1992, parts of — or the entire property itself — began being referred to under the Harness Track variant. Complicating what appears to be a widespread acceptance of the Harness Track variant, the property itself is still listed in the National Register of Historic Places under the original Race Track variant.
    3. In my opinion, I believe that WP:COMMONNAME should be the standard applied here (and to a degree, WP:MPN and WP:WIAN[a]) which might have the article's name being changed to the Harness Track variant. However, without a broader consensus, I am unwilling to make this change outright on my own as COI edit request-reviewer.
    4. Thus, in order to change the article's name, I believe that the request should be submitted using the {{requested move}} template specifically as a controversial move request process requiring discussion amongst the wider community. A controversial requested move typically takes about 7 days to complete, and before taking this step, the COI editor should ensure that they are well acquainted with the requested move process by thoroughly reviewing its procedures. I believe that this process offers the best chance for changing the article's name. More information can be found at requested moves.[b]
  2. Adding photos: Any photos which may be used in the article ought to be uploaded to Wikipedia along with the appurtenant use licensing before they can be added to the article. Depending on which license is chosen, you may upload the photos through either Wikipedia's File Upload Wizard or the Wikimedia Commons:File Upload Wizard.
  3. Adding text: Text which is proposed to be used in the article can easily be placed here on the talk page for review. This text should be placed using an editor's own words and phrasing and would benefit from including properly formatted reference citations.

If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask here on the talk page or at the WP:Help desk. If posting a question here on the talk page, kindly change the {{request edit}} template's answer parameter to read from |ans=yes to |ans=no in order to notify editors about your question. Also remember to (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Thank you! Notes

  1. ^ WP:WIAN suggests that the name be widely accepted by "disinterested, authoritative reference works...if they are current." The current acceptance I see comes mainly from the administrators of the property — who would not be considered disinterested nor a reference work. Outside of reference entries, the historical material I've located does not help in this regard, as it refers to the property as either Pinehurst or the harness track and only minimally disambiguates the greater Pinehurst resort area from facilities specifically nearer to the racing track.[1][2][3][4]
  2. ^ I am willing to assist the COI editor with the requested move process if need be.
