Question about reference

I quote the following from the main article, section Animal cruelty:

Seen from this point of view, the game consists primarily of Pokémon trainers capturing and bartering in wild animals, coercing them to fight one another.

This section has as a reference the http://www.angelfire.com/scifi/planet0/intpoke.htm link. In other words, the article is using as reference a page hosted in a free host with a little more than 1500 visits. Does the article really need this non notable link? Can't a better one be found? Or just delete the reference, as it is not reliable at all. Otherwise, anyone would get a free account, upload a page, and then use it to backup some opinion in Wikipedia ;-) -- ReyBrujo 06:58, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

It is an example of an anti-pokémon site made by someone who, unlike most other anti-pokémon site makers, does have brains. But it shouldn't be a real source indeed.
Talking about sources by the way, I see that the Controversy and criticism section has been backed up pretty good over the last few months. Good going! Now the only two things that need a good source are the Animal cruelty and the Americanization.

pokemoncenter.com

I am unsure how to make my comment; I have never commented on Wikipedia before. My suggestion is just for another official Pokemon site - Pokemon Center www.pokemoncenter.com is the official merchandise site for Pokemon. I figured that it should be included at the end of the Pokemon wiki article. Powers.andy 14:57, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

If it's really an official site, it should be there. - Face 17:13, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, the official www.pokemon.com site links to it from their SHOP button in their top navigation. Powers.andy 15:28, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Zbtb7...

is unrelated to the subject of this article, already has its own article, and is mentioned in the "see also" thing at the top of this article, so it doesn't need a section. Ashibaka tock 18:02, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

Use capital letters please. It's relevant. Highway Rainbow Sneakers 18:14, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Please don't delete something without consensus. I've reverted it. Highway Rainbow Sneakers 20:04, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
I didn't see you contest my reason for removing it. I don't think Nintendo had anything to do with the naming of Zbtb7. So, it has nothing to do with the subject of the article, viz., "Pokémon is a multi-billion dollar media franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996..." It's a totally separate thing. Ashibaka tock 20:23, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Nintendo sued them, it's a prime example of mutilation of Japanese names, missing the é. They named it after Pokémon, the ideas of the monsters, which is more cultural impact. It has got plenty to do with the "multi-billion dollar media franchise". Highway Rainbow Sneakers 20:33, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
It's not important enough that it gets its own section. Like, there isn't an entire section for Sam Buck's Coffee under Starbucks. Ashibaka tock 21:38, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Should we have a straw poll then? Highway Rainbow Sneakers 22:01, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Who else is editing this article? Ask for WP:3O maybe. Ashibaka tock 22:04, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
The WikiProject, WikidSmaht, Face, Anthony Jake La, lots. Highway Rainbow Sneakers 22:06, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Actually I always thought that disambig on the top of this article was ugly. The Zbtb7 does have something to do with Pokémon because it was named 'Pokemon' and Nintendo sued them about it. It's a nice little section, nice little trivia. It's good as it. Delete that disambig instead! -- Face 18:25, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
The point of a disambiguation is to point people to separate articles that have nothing to do with the subject, like this one. Ashibaka tock 00:18, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Precisely. The disambig is there to point readers interested in molecular biology away from the game/characters and towards the subject they are looking for. Burying information on the gene deep in the article doesn't help at all for that (who would read through an article on Pokemon hoping for information on gene expression?). I don't mind if you take out the section on Zbtb7 in the article, but I strongly think the disambig should stay where it is. bikeable (talk) 00:23, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
I agree wholeheartedly with Bikeable above. This seems clear-cut to me. Zbtb7 has nothing to do with Pokémon so it needs a disambg at the top and no section uin the article. I'll remove it now. --Celestianpower háblame 21:07, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

So, could someone explain to me how this page got vandalized? --Anonymous dude—Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.73.120.13 (talkcontribs) 03:43, May 13 2006 (UTC)

When was it vandalized? Or did you mean this talk page?( The talk page isn’t protected.) Anyway, pretty simple, someone with an account clicked “edit this page” and vandalized it. Still, vandalism is way down( on the article) since the semiprotection was enacted. This article used to get hit several times a day. And “--Anonymous dude” isn’t good enough. You have to sign posts with four tildes( ~~~~). -- WikidSmaht (talk) 06:09, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
The talk page vandalism have rocketed though, Highway Rainbow Sneakers 08:33, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
I’m not sure that’s the term I’d use, and even with the increase, it’s nothing compared to the old article vandalism. -- WikidSmaht (talk) 08:56, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
What I meant was that the talk page vandalism has rocketed compared to what it was (none or very little). Cheers, Highway Rainbow Sneakers 09:15, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok I think we should lock this page I know that little children look at this. My little brother saw a word that he never knew (about sex). Spareus151 22:56, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

That's not a good reason to lock it. No admin is going to even think of protection because one vandal happened to put obscene things up. -Amarkov babble 23:03, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Linking to Serebii

Serebii.net, which I added to the article, got removed. it has everything a Pokemon fan needs to know -- and more. Like Berrydexes, Attackdexes, etc, none of which you could find at Pokemon.com. MasterMew 01:26, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree with MasterMew. Even I my self visit Serebii.net and find much inforation relating to pokemon there. Even news from Japan (such as Diaond/Pearl) appeared there. It even has a large fan base with several thousand registered members in it's forums the last time I checked. --fnfd 05:10, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
What it comes down to is, it’s a fansite. A great one, but a fansite nonetheless. It is not in anyway official or affiliated with Nintendo. -- WikidSmaht (talk) 07:02, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
Hm...OK. Maybe linking to NetBattle, because it's legal, so must be in some way affiliated with Nintendo.
Hm...well, no need linking to Serebii. Most every Pokemon fan knows about it. MasterMew 12:56, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
That’s ridiculous. Just because Nintendo hasn’t prosecuted them, doesn’t mean it’s legal, and certainly doesn’t mean they are affiliated. -- WikidSmaht (talk) 13:21, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
o.o NetBattle is illeagal? Oh my god...I thought seeing somewhere on the site that it was completely 100% legal... -deletes off of computer-

MasterMew 13:37, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Meh, I don’t know enough about copyright law or NetBattle to say for sure, but it looks to me like they are using Nintendo’s intellectual property without explicit consent, so, yes, that would be illegal. On their part, not yours. I wouldn’teven start to worry until/unless Nintendo shuts them down. -- WikidSmaht (talk) 13:43, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

If Netbattle WAS illegal, I'd delete it right now, but AFAIK it's not. They're not trying to get profits or anything -_- Blue Mirage 09:17, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

NetBattle isn't illegal. It's not an emulation of any Pokemon game, and as stated above, the creators make no profit off of the software. Even if it was illegal, Nintendo obviously doesn't care about it, as some NOA employees know about NB and have done nothing to stop it.Anyway, the main site for NetBattle isn't supported anymore and has shut down, so we can't add a link for it. Plot holes

I think there should be a part in the article that talks about plot holes.

two that I know of is Brocks mother's death, but she is seen in a the episode it is revealed that Brock left his Ludicolo with his family.

The other being that only Psychics can use Psychic Pokémon as mentioned in the episode where Ash goes up against Sabrina, yet many trainers are seen with them, and in a lost episode that was shown during the Johto years, A Girafarig was featured in episode #158 ("The Psychic Sidekicks"). A whole town was seen using Psychic Pokémon, with no apparent Psychic ability.Yami 07:09, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

It had already been revealed in a Pokémon Chronicles, in "A Family That Battles Together, Stays Together", Brock's mother took over the Pewter City gym. I think the theory is, Brock's mother either went on holiday, it was noted how many varing hobbies she had, or she was hiding in a similar fashion to Brock's father. Anyway, that is too central to the Pokémon anime, but you can bring it up at Talk:Pokémon (anime), if you wish. And Sabrina was stubborn. Cheers, Highway Rainbow Sneakers 09:00, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
In the anime article, maybe, but not the main article. -- WikidSmaht (talk) 09:00, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Brock's mother being dead is a dub edit and later inconsistency as they DID dub the specials they weren't expecting to see his mother mentioned in, let alone appearing as a character in. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.116.140.39 (talkcontribs) .

Remove backmasking comment

I'm talking about this part of the article:

Also, when the main theme song for the television show is sung in English, the lyrics “gotta catch ’em all” are alleged to say “I love Satan” or “oh Satan” when played backwards, which is known as “backmasking”. This has left some Christians and Christian organizations believing that Pokémon subliminally encourages Satanism. However, backmasking in general is highly controversial and debatable, leaving room for much skepticism.

I think it is unnecessary and uninformative. In my opinion it should be removed. People have these sorts of stupid conspiracy theories (hidden messages etc.) about all sorts of things. 'Controversial' is understating it; the claim is complete nonsence. Wikipedia can't afford to comment on every stupid belief that people come up with. Karadoc** 10:58, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

References problem

Is there a way to mirror PHP pages to which this articles refers, so that they stay in existence? For example this source:
"Pokémon USA Takes Over Pokémon Licensing"
...which does not exist anymore. I have tried to wayback what I can, but the Internet Archive Wayback Machine refuses/is unable to store .php pages. Is there an alternative way to store this usefull information somewhere? -- Face 21:17, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

It is not that they refuse, either a robots.txt file was changed, or they changed the id format. You usually can find an alternative (and existing) source (in example, this link may replace the previous one). If not, all you can do is assume good faith and believe the reference existed and that, when it was added, was checked by other people. -- ReyBrujo 21:49, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
What do you mean with "They don't refuse it but they changed the id format"?
Thanks for the Gamesutra article anyway! I've added the information again. -- Face 11:37, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
The Wayback Machine was able to save some links from the pressrelease, but then stopped. They may have changed the format, or just don't answer to bots requests. Note that the lost story has an id of 8081, while the newest (as of June 14) entry has an id of 1784. [1] In any case, my suggestion is to spend a couple of minutes googling for a similar story, and if not found, assume good faith and keep the link until someone else is able to replace it. -- ReyBrujo 11:43, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Electric or Computer

Is is Electric Soldier Porygon or Computer Soldier Porygon? This article uses both. My extremely poor knowledge of Japanese (and the help of a Japanese dictionary) puts it as "Electric brain Soldier Porygon" (Electric Brain being a common nickname for the computer in Japan), but I'd like a more native Japanese speaker to check (the title in Japanese is "電脳戦士ポリゴン"). smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 21:53, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Serebii lists it as Electric I think. Go by what it used as the main one List of banned Pokémon episodes. Highway Batman! 22:31, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Let's look at the kanji. 電 is den, meaning electricity. 脳 is nōzuru, meaning brain or memory. 電脳 is dennō, meaning electronic brain. 電算 densan or 電子計算機 denshikeisanki are the Japanese words for computer, apparently. Either way, just "electric" is not an accurate translation in the least. ' (Feeling chatty? ) (Edits!) 21:49, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Accuracy doesn't really enter into it. Per WP:MOS, we should be using the most common English-language name, however inaccurate a translation it may be. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 00:46, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Beginning of Pokemon

The initial paragraph says that Pokemon was created in February 1996. This is not fully accurate. The initial paragraph of this article does reference that Pokemon is derived from the Japense Poketto Monsutā, meaning "Pocket Monsters". Indeed, Pokemon was initially sold in English under the term Pocket Monsters until the (obvious to native English speakers) connotations of that phrase became apparent and the English name was changed in early 1996 from Pocket Monsters to Pokemon. Pokemon was first copyrighted in the United States in 1995. I'm going to add this into the main article and I'd appreciate it if my change was not removed a second time. editorials

Pokémon, being a popular franchise, has undoubtedly left its mark on pop-culture. The Pokémon characters themselves have become pop-culture icons; examples include the Pikachu balloon at a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a Pokémon-styled Boeing 747-400 (pictured), thousands of merchandise items, a theme park in Nagoya, Japan in 2005 and Taipei in 2006. Pokémon also appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 1999. The Comedy Central show Drawn Together has a character named Ling-Ling which is a direct parody of Pikachu. Several other shows such as ReBoot, The Simpsons and South Park have made references to Pokémon, among other series.

Why are editorials like this allowed? I can imagine reading this in Newsweek or Time, but it doesn't sound appropriate at all in a reference work. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.235.238.180 (talkcontribs) .

This isn't just appropriate, this is necessary for the article. Since Pokémon is a work of fiction, we have to follow WP:WAF and write in an out-of-universe perspective in order for this article to be any good. We have to show examples of why Pokémon is so relevant in real life. PCEevee talk 20:39, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

The page speaks of banned episodes - what does it mean by banned? That it won't be shown on a certain channel or that the government made it illegal to show it? --A Sunshade Lust 00:44, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

If I recall correctly, the choice is made by the TV stations, probably made under pressure from the people concerned about content, such as the Jynx one; some other ones more preemptive, such as the Tentacuel one, and the earthquake. DanPMK 05:15, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
It depends, Nintendo has chosen not to air some episodes so in a sense they are not really banned. TJ Spyke 04:55, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

What are we going to do about Vandalism?

Alright, instead of posting this on all 500 Pokemon articles (that should be about right, right? Because 403 Pokemon, then a bunch of assorted articles...;)) I decided I'd post it here, at the heart of Wikipedia's Pokemon articles. As many of us know, a four year old chimpanzee has been vandalising many of the Pokemon articles. There seems to be no way of stopping this other than locking every article, which would be stupid. Any suggestions? ShadowUltra 19:33, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

The vandal, who if he wasn't on an AOL connection would have been fried by Raul by now according to him, is repeatedly vandalizing templates that appear in all the creature articles, causing a giant *coughs* to appear in every single Pokémon page, and in the case of Friday, the Main Page. The way to fix this problem is to protect the said templates from new accounts editing them, and to block all editors who do this to the templates. At present, accounts need to be at least 4 days old to bypass protection, so this will slow him considerably. Cheers, Highway Return to Oz... 19:40, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Now there's an idea that should have been thought up earlier! Realistically, all templates should be protected because they're more mechanical than the articles themselves, which are more content-based, and while any IP address can give potentially good edits to the content of articles, only the more experienced Wikipedians should tinker with the templates. By the way, when it comes to the content of the vandalism in question, I suspect an ulterior motive in calling the culprit a 4-year-old-chimp. ^_^ Erik the Appreciator 01:39, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Great idea, I support this all the way! WikiSlasher 11:36, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
It is a risky decision, some templates such as Template:Pokémon species are awfully complicated, while others, like Template:Pokenum, thrives on new users. I think we should discuss at the project talk page, because it is a risky decision. Highway Return to Oz... 11:41, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Older children 'ripping off' the younger ones edit

The recent edit which I reverted included this in the trading card section:

In Australia, Pokemon Trading Cards caused widespread problems throughout Primary Schools, as older children were 'ripping off' the younger ones. Often causing the teacher to be abused by disgruntled parents. A severe case of rage was when Principal Gabriel O'Keeffe was kinghit by a yobbo.

well while it is funny, it's not in the style of what Wikipedia is for. I thought if it should go anywhere it would be Controversy and Criticism. The info is true, (well don't know about the kinghit by a yobbo part :P) but didn't think it should go in the main section. Schools ban popular stuff sometimes when they think it'll resolve problems, although I disagreed with this action at my old school and thought it was stupid. IMO the kids should be smart enough not to get ripped off. WikiSlasher 11:15, 3 August 2006 (UTC) EDIT: Read it again and found no mention was made about them being banned from schools. Sorry about the misquote, sometimes I read things that aren't there :( Also, the only thing I know that has happened is kids being ripped off, not anything else. OK, where did this come from all of a sudden? Does this statement refer to the Japanese version? (Well, of course it does; it's only common sense that it would have to be a Japanese title.) But that still doesn't explain what the heck it's trying to convey. If anyone would care to enlighten me, please do. Otherwise, I'm removin' it. --Ppk01 12:49, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Questionable Source

In the Americanization section under Controversy and Criticism the first sentence is documented to source number 21. The first sentence reads: "Both critics and fans of the Pokémon franchise have criticized the apparent Americanization of the franchise, claiming that American companies use Pokémon as a tool to exploit children of their (or their parents’) money". This seems to be a speculation as the source that it is directed from is a Pokemon Crystal game review. In the case that it is speculation, there is plagiarism involved also as a sentence in the game review resembles the first sentence of the Americanization section. The sentence in question reads: "Also, on your way you try to overthrow Team Rocket, a group of evil trainers who want to exploit Pokemon for money".Source 21 This content should be removed to avoid criticism and copyright infringement. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Temblor (talkcontribs)

How is it copyright violation? —Minun SpidermanReview Me 10:46, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Not a copyright violation, but is still completly and utterly and absoutly ridiclous. Even if there is a source, it's still an incredibly ludicous and unreliable source. This shouldn't even be permitted on the Wiki article to begin with, and it's plain stupidity to even have it there. I would reccomend a speedy deletion of that absurdity. Wikipedia is for facts. Not ridiculous heresay from uncredible sources.

Can this: "An example of this is and alleged subliminal message in the original pokemon theme song( if you reverse the line "You teach me and I'll teach you" you can make out "We need money, yes we do"" ....honestly be of any importance or vaule to the article? Alledged or not, it's just absurd to any rational, thinking person. It's inclusion, to me, smells of biased hatred written and linked to with an uncredible source. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.227.191.185 (talkcontribs)

Number of Units Sold

What is the actual number of units sold? And what is the total profit? The article says 150+ million units have been sold, but the next sentence says 143 million. Is there a definite number? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.44.20.121 (talkcontribs)

Drugs addition to animal cruelty

An IP user added a passage in the middle of the animal cruelty section, detailing possible drugs references within the series. As there were no references provided, I reverted the addition. If any references can be found that are not used to infer but to source a statement, then I have no problem with it being added again. Thought I'd be courtious and let you all know LinaMishima 19:58, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

The person might've been referring to the fact that in Pokémon Red and Blue there is a shop called the "Drugs store" which stuff like Protein, Iron, Carbos and Calcium can be bought from (these are given to the Pokémon to improve their stats). WikiSlasher 12:07, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
There as more, too, including speculation about canabis. If you're interested, it's on the history. Probably debatable information that is hard to reference LinaMishima 12:15, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Wow that was fast...anyway I must admit I didn't bother to check the history the first time. I see what you're talking about now page diff but I searched the Internet and found nothing - if you ask me that person's been smoking too many green herbs and eating too many wild mushrooms themselves heh WikiSlasher 12:26, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Regardless of the drugstore, a reference to "performance-enhancing drugs" is too much a loaded term with its implications toward steroid abuse. Protein, Iron, Carbos, etc. are minerals recognized in an unambiguously positive light as necessities for good health, and I can't imagine any controversy over that--nor is any cited. 19:12, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Updating the Starters section of the Article

In the Starter's section of the article, it details the starters which can be picked in the various Pokémon games, but it fails to mention the starters for the two Gamecube games: Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. Now, granted, in these two games you don't *pick* your starters, but I still think they should be mentioned since they *are* starters for a Pokémon RPG. I'll edit and add them in but if anyone thinks they shouldn't be there, feel free to revert and let me know why they shouldn't be. Undrhil 00:55, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Special split

Under the section where changes in the gameboy games from the first to the second generation there is something I'd like to add. While the article as it exists now has almost everything, they forgot the addition of the Special Defence stat. In the first generation the abilities that a pokemon developed as it grew levels were Speed, Attack, Defence, HP, and Special. In the second generation, the Special stat was split into two, Special attack (equivalent to Special) and Special Defence (opposing stat to Special Attack)

"The multi-billion-dollar Pokémon media franchise"

Does every page about an individual Pokemon have to start with this phrase? It's one of the most obnoxious things I've ever seen on Wikipedia and if I knew how to do it without taking several hours I'd take it out of every article it's in, except the main Pokemon article. Consider, at least, that it becomes quite redundant when looking through multiple articles, and readers can find out such information about the franchise from the main article — knowing how much money the series making doesn't help me understand Wooper any better. Zincomog 17:51, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Fourth generation pictures?

Can I just ask - where have all the pictures for the new Pokemon from Diamond and Pearl gone? Mikaruge, Perap et al have no pictures at all, whereas only four days ago every single one did. I'd just like to know why the pictures have been removed, that's all. - NP Chilla 21:04, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Well, since the Ken Sugimori artwork was going to be soon revealed, the editors that make up the Pokémon Wikiproject decided that we should just let the images be deleted, until the Sugimori artwork filtered through. The reason they have been removed is before the images are deleted by admins, a bot, a semi-automatic user that runs on a network to do a certain task too boring for human editors, check all the images to make sure they have sources, fair use tags and fair use rationales. If it finds images like that, it pulls them out of articles, and puts them on a list to be deleted within a week if the info required isn't added, which is what we've just let happen. Thanks for asking, and if you have any other questions, they'll be better addressed at the project talk page. Cheers! Highway Grammar Enforcer! 21:21, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

slightly incorrect IPA

the article claims the pronuciation of pokémon is [ˈpoʊ.keɪ.mɑn]... i would agree with this, as this is the "correct" way to pronounce it in english. although by stating specifically that it is "frequently mispronounced [poʊ.kiˈmæn]," it implies that [ˈpoʊ.keɪ.mɑn] is the absolut correct pronunciation. however, if it is pronounced as it truly would be in Japanese it would actually be transcribed [ˈpo.ke.mon]; no diphthongs and the final /a/ should be /o/. i'm not sure if this should also be mentioned in the article but i just thought it might be important to clarify. --Samusamu 02:54, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

You are right. I've changed it to more neutral wording, unless someone has a source saying what the official pronunciation is? -Amarkov blahedits 03:46, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
I think it should be changed back. Just the fact that it was pronounced differently in a song doesn't make the spoken pronunciation variable - by their nature, sung vowels are much more variable than spoken vowels, just because they have to conform with melody and rhythm. As far as I've heard, whenever the word is spoken in the anime, it's somewhere between [ˈpo.ke.mon] and [ˈpoʊ.keɪ.mɑn] (usually closer to the latter). ~e.o.t.d~ 01:12, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Suggestions

The following suggestions were generated by a semi-automatic javascript program, and might not be applicable for the article in question.

  • Please expand the lead to conform with guidelines at Wikipedia:Lead. The article should have an appropriate number of paragraphs as is shown on WP:LEAD, and should adequately summarize the article.[?]
  • Per Wikipedia:Context and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates), months and days of the week generally should not be linked. Years, decades, and centuries can be linked if they provide context for the article.[?]
  • There may be an applicable infobox for this article. For example, see Template:Infobox Biography, Template:Infobox School, or Template:Infobox City.[?] (Note that there might not be an applicable infobox; remember that these suggestions are not generated manually)
  • Per Wikipedia:Context and Wikipedia:Build the web, years with full dates should be linked; for example, link January 15, 2006.[?]
  • Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings), headings generally should not repeat the title of the article. For example, if the article was Ferdinand Magellan, instead of using the heading ==Magellan's journey==, use ==Journey==.[?]
  • There are a few occurrences of weasel words in this article- please observe WP:AWT. Certain phrases should specify exactly who supports, considers, believes, etc., such a view.
    • apparently
    • might be weasel words, and should be provided with proper citations (if they already do, or are not weasel terms, please strike this comment).[?]
  • Watch for redundancies that make the article too wordy instead of being crisp and concise. (You may wish to try Tony1's redundancy exercises.)
    • While additive terms like “also”, “in addition”, “additionally”, “moreover”, and “furthermore” may sometimes be useful, overusing them when they aren't necessary can instead detract from the brilliancy of the article. This article has 33 additive terms, a bit too much.
    • Vague terms of size often are unnecessary and redundant - “some”, “a variety/number/majority of”, “several”, “a few”, “many”, “any”, and “all”. For example, “All pigs are pink, so we thought of a number of ways to turn them green.”
  • Avoid using contractions like (outside of quotations): didn't, don't, isn't, can't, haven't.
  • As done in WP:FOOTNOTE, footnotes usually are located right after a punctuation mark (as recommended by the CMS, but not mandatory), such that there is no space in between. For example, the sun is larger than the moon [2]. is usually written as the sun is larger than the moon.[2][?]
  • Please provide citations for all of the {{fact}}s.[?]
  • Please ensure that the article has gone through a thorough copyediting so that it exemplifies some of Wikipedia's best work. See also User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 1a.[?]

You may wish to browse through User:AndyZ/Suggestions for further ideas. Thanks, BlueLotas 06:30, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Okay, back to Earth: Check out this general description of Pokemon that I wrote for the Super Smash Bros. wiki a couple days ago. Perhaps the "franchise description" section should be used as a base for a no-nonsense rewrite of the page (Smash bros. influence aside)? Assuming the page needs that sort of rewrite, of course. The most obvious thing wrong with the current page to me is the Starter Pokemon section (the list of, in particular), which doesn't seem necessary to cover in the general Pokemon article and would fit much better in the game articles themselves. Major vandalism going on

I mentioned this earlier in an older thread, but I'm saying it again here just to get everyone's attention: since the semi-protection went away a few days ago, vandalism has skyrocketed - and I don't think that's too much of an exaggeration, either. Historically, this article has always attracted a lot of vandals, but nearly all of them are anonymous, unestablished users that are blocked by semi-protection. Granted, semi-protection does turn away the helpful anons too (the history showed at least one helpful edit today), but in my opinion it's much better for the article to stop the vandalism than to just deal with it. We need this thing re-protected. Thoughts? 蜻蛉の目e.o.t.d 23:43, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Under Game Mechanics, the following is presented:

Starting with a starter Pokémans, the player can catch wild Pokémen by weakening them and catching them with Poké tamas. Conversely, they can choose to defeat them in battle in order to gain experience for their Pokémon, raising their levels and teaching them new moves.

I propose the following be added:

Beginning with Pokémon XY, experience points are also awarded for catching the Pokémon. Fivevolts (talk) 17:48, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Could it be argued that capturing a Pokémon is defeating it? Plus adding another sentence would make the paragraph a bit unwieldy and crufty. Stickee (talk) 04:19, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
Technically in this case, to defeat a Pokemon is to KO it by eliminating all the HP. Doing so makes it impossible to catch. Catching the Pokemon means it still has HP left. But that's me being technical about it. :p—cyberpowerChat:Offline 04:25, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
The line as is identifies capturing and defeating a Pokemon as two distinct events. The proposed change should be added, as after XY capturing IS a form of defeat that gives experience. I say it should go through. Semisufficient (talk) 04:05, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Regarding 4Kids Entertainment/Pokemon

There is a lot of misinformation regarding this.Contrary to popular belief, 4Kids are the ones who dropped their interest in the Pokémon Company and the anime itself.People often thought it was TPCI just "seizing" control, but that is not the case. Its not the Pokémon Companies fault 4kids dropped their interest,so the outrage at the time regarding the new voice actors didn't make any sense. And i doubt the 4Kids voice actors new about this. They don't handle the business aspects of the company.

They sold their 3% stake in the Pokémon Company in October 2005. http://yahoo.brand.edgar-online.com/displayfilinginfo.aspx?FilingID=4282342-169060-250211&type=sect&TabIndex=2&companyid=2289&ppu=%252fdefault.aspx%253fcik%253d58592

For most wikias the copyright owners in general turn a blind eye because fan-sites are a good PR outlet for them. But it doesnt sadly invalidate the basic problem from our end. (If we were linking to external fansites, Serebii.net should be at the top of the list due to the larger amount of detailed info.) Only in death does duty end (talk) 10:01, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
  • Uhh. Linking to the Pokemon Wiki would provide access to much detailed Pokemon information without having to burden Wikipedia's server space with it, and would avoid disputes between people who say "Many people want this information, keep it in" and people who say "It is Pokécruft, delete it". Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:33, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
I am generally of the opinion that all fancruft should be transferred off-wiki and agree with you. I was just pointing out the rule that is most commonly cited for why we dont link to fan-wiki's. I just visited the pokemon wikia and it is as expected (since the last time I visited) ad-ridden and less useful info than most of the other pokemon fan-sites - as well as liberally violating copyright (they all do, but as is standard for a Wikia, that is worse than most). Serebii, Bulbapedia or PokemonDB would be better choices. Only in death does duty end (talk) 10:38, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

To conform with MOS:IPA, the parenthetical content in the first sentence should be changed to the following:

Pokémon (Japanese: ポケモン, Hepburn: Pokemon, Japanese pronunciation: ['pokemoɴ]; English: /ˈpkˌmɒn/ POH-kay-MON or /ˈpkɪˌmɒn/ POH-ki-MON)

Unnecessary/inaccurate content

Please excuse if I approach this wrong, I'm new to wikipedia.

This paragraph under the Cultural Influence section:

"Joseph Jay Tobin theorizes that the success of the franchise was mainly due to the long list of names that could be learned by children and repeated in their peer groups.{citation needed} The rich fictional universe provided a lot of opportunities for discussion and demonstration of knowledge in front of their peers. In the French version Nintendo took care to translate the name of the creatures so that they reflected the French culture and language. In all cases the names of the creatures were linked to its characteristics, which converged with the children's belief that names have symbolic power. Children could pick their favourite Pokémon and affirm their individuality while at the same time affirming their conformance to the values of the group, and they could distinguish themselves from other kids by asserting what they liked and what they didn't like from every chapter. Pokémon gained popularity because it provided a sense of identity to a wide variety of children, and lost it quickly when many of those children found that the identity groups were too big and searched for identities that would distinguish them into smaller groups"

seems to be entirely irrelevant and is purely the conjecture of one man, who no one knows anyway and who has no association with pokemon. As a member of pokemon's key demographic (I was 6 when RBY came out), I feel comfortable saying that the success of the franchise has nothing to do with 'the long list of names', or 'children's belief that names have symbolic power'. This line in particular

"Children could pick their favourite Pokémon and affirm their individuality while at the same time affirming their conformance to the values of the group, and they could distinguish themselves from other kids by asserting what they liked and what they didn't like from every chapter."

sounds like nonsense that a social scientist is writing just to write something. There's not some complex theory behind why Pokemon is the most successful franchise in the world. It comes down to 3 very simple reasons:

1. people like collecting things 2. people like 'battling' in video games 3. as an RPG, pokemon is very simple to learn but very difficult to master

I feel that this paragraph can simply be removed from the article with no loss in value.

I don't know how to edit wiki, but I wanted to bring to someone's attention that whenever anyone clicks on the link to jump to the "generations" section, it instead opens a Twitter page with a prewritten tweet to send out under your twitter account. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BoredWithYatchs (talkcontribs) 04:47, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

I cant find anything on the normal web/desktop view. Are you viewing this on a mobile device or dedicated Wikipedia app? Only in death does duty end (talk) 07:51, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
I think they added a transparent image over everything that links to the tweet. However, the cached version works fine. Article is protected so I can't remove it.

Take Down Offensive Tweet on Pokemon Wikipedia Page

If you try searching Pokemon Wiki on Google without being signed in to Wikipedia, you will see an innocent looking Wikipedia page "Pokémon - Wikipedia" and the url appears fine. However, clicking on any links within the page takes you to an offensive Tweet. Please take time to investigate the person behind this or at least take down the Tweet. The Wikipedia reference (when hovering over links) to the links points to a strange spoofed URL with percentage signs in it. NOTE: This relates to "Links open a Twitter page." Community Cleaner (talk) 01:47, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

I've looked through the edit history of the article going back to last month and don't see anything that links to any tweet. However, there was some vandalism at {{Infobox media franchise}} that was recently WP:REVDEL that may have been related to this. —Farix (t | c) 02:01, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
I was the administrator that deleted those revisions, and I can confirm that that was precisely the problem that was affecting this article. A user vandalized the template so that clicking anywhere on an article that transcludes it would take you to a malicious Twitter link. If you notice this affecting you, the solution is to purge the cache, though I could have sworn I had done this already for the Pokémon article. Mz7 (talk) 11:47, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

I think this page has been vandalized and all the links goes to twitter page.

I am not familiar with wikipedia editing, would appreciate if someone would look at it and fix it.

Thanks

Anime series section claims there are 19 films then lists 21

Section:

In addition to the TV series, nineteen Pokémon films have been made, with the pair of films, Pokémon the Movie: Black—Victini and Reshiram and White—Victini and Zekrom considered together as one. A twentieth is also in production. Collectible bonuses, such as promotional trading cards, have been available with some of the films. Various children's books, collectively known as Pokémon Junior, are also based on the anime.[47]

Should say

A twenty first film is also in production. Collectible bonuses, such as promotional trading cards, have been available with some of the films. Rare and unusual Pokemon

Start right out by admitting my ignorance. I truly came to this article to learn the basics of Pokemon, knowledge the article fairly successfully conferred to me, but started from YouTube videos, some of which were lists of rare and unusual Pokemon, and was wondering if there should b something in the article about such, @ least rare; unusual might b too subjective. Also realize that those topics might b more appropriate to another article or list, but would very much appreciate instructive feedback if I'm off-base.Slarty1 (talk) 06:21, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

Broken Subtitles/Closed Captioning

In the video early in the article, I noticed that the closed captioning had an error. The error appears to be that an apostrophe symbol has been affected by Mojibake, specifically, ’. There are other, similar errors other than the one I mentioned here. Should this be fixed? Realicraft (talk) 00:17, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Error in Name Section

The section of the article that explains the name Pokémon incorrectly calls the name a contraction, when it is, instead, a portmanteau. Here is why: "…contractions are formed from words that would otherwise appear together in sequence [usually with an apostrophe], such as do and not to make don't, whereas a portmanteau word is formed by combining two or more existing words that all relate to a singular concept" (source).

Article Reads: "The name Pokémon is the romanized contraction of the Japanese brand Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター Poketto Monsutā)."

Should Say: "The name Pokémon is the romanized portmanteau of the Japanese brand Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター Poketto Monsutā)."

162.253.27.34 (talk) 00:34, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

The source itself says its a contraction. "Poketto Monsutaa is translated to Pocket Monsters in English, but that would have to change to the popular contraction Pokemon once the game was exported to other countries." - since the source supports it being a contraction, that's what we're going to have to go by. Anything saying otherwise would be original research.—Mythdon (talkcontribs) 01:33, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

Ranking of the Pokémon video Game

As per below link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_game_franchises

should following line be changed as The original video game series is the second best-selling video game franchise (behind Nintendo's Mario franchise)[16] too The original video game series is the third best-selling video game franchise (behind Nintendo's Mario franchise and Super Mario franchise)[16]

Because this page says Mario and Super Mario are different franchises. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_game_franchises — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raky801 (talkcontribs) 02:23, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Stuff that has to urgently be done on the article.

  1. To change the profile picture into the original Japanese logo.
  2. To consider the article a featured article.

I'm not asking politely to do this, this HAS TO BE DONE ASAP. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Supercontributor (talkcontribs) 23:33, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

  1.  N No to the logo change. On Wikipedia, a brand's current official logo is usually preferred over a historical one; a good reason needs to be provided if a historical logo is used instead, which in this case there isn't one. The current international logo much more recognizable and iconic globally than any of the Japanese logos past and present, having been in very active use since the franchise's globalization started in 1998, which also makes it a historical logo in a roundabout manner due to its age. The logo is even used in the franchise's home country of Japan itself, albeit in a much more specific situations over there (the current backs of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, for example). Also, that is called an infobox, not a profile; this isn't social media here.
  2. You can start the process of requesting for this article to become a featured article, but I don't recommend doing so yourself since you're new here.
Besides those things, there isn't any real urgency here (for the most part) on Wikipedia. And you really need to stop making so many of the same sections with the same titles on the talk pages here, otherwise you'll be seen as a spammer. –WPA (talk) 03:05, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

Fighting wording

In one of the paragraphs, it talks about how Pokémon are forced to fight. May I ask for it to be changed, as Pokémon are not forced to fight, most willingly do so. Only cruel Trainers force them to without thinking about their needs. Please do so soon, as such simple wording can cause huge misunderstandings. --SonicFishies (talk) 17:25, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

That's just Peta's twisted way of thinking, provided that you've actually considered the context in full.
Here's the quote in question: "In 2012, PETA criticized the concept of Pokémon as supporting cruelty to animals. PETA compared the game's concept, of capturing animals and forcing them to fight...." Sk8erPrince (talk) 12:33, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
