Google Search

A quick google search yields the following page: http://www.teluguworld.org/new/bammera.htm, which appears to be pretty much exactly the same as the first section here. Is there some link between the authors of the two pages? Credit should definitely be given to the author of the other page. The text here may also have to be changed around a bit, so as to not be a direct copy.

Pothana's birthplace

Pothana was born in Cuddapah district of Andhrapradesh. whoever has changed the birthplace should provide valid reasons for his argument. Without proper validity or substantiation of information it is not proper to make statements here.

Birthplace of Pathana is near Warangal

There has been some confusion regarding the birthplace of Pothana. I wanted to cite authentic sources published by AndhraPradesh Sahitya Academy, stating that the birthplace of Pothana is the village of Bammera, near Warangal. Look at the following URLs at the Digital Library of India, which will show you the research that has gone in to establish the birthplace of Pothana.

Also, you should remember that some of the chapters of original (ThalaPatra Grandhas) Pothana Bhagavatam were destroyed during Muslim invasion of Telengana. Later, several poets have completed these parts. Most of these co-authors of Andhra Bhagavatam are from the Telengana districts.

Some people think that Pothana is the only author of the SriMadandhraBhagavatam. However, several chapters, or parts of the chapters are written by Naraya, Singana, Gangana and others. Other co-authors include people from Khammam and other Telengana regions. I have been reading Pothana Bhagavatam for quite some time and if you need I can provide other sources and Sasanas proving that Pothana was a resident of the village of Bammera, Warangal district.

Just leaving a note here. User:Nagarjuna198, who appears to have a history of unilaterally moving articles to uncommon titles that he thinks are correct, without discussion, and has repeatedly been chastised by other editors for this, had renamed this article Bammera Potana. This is not the commonly used name in the sources. I've moved it back to Pothana for now. He has also gone on a spree changing this poet's name on other articles; still need to take a look to see how much damage has been done. Shreevatsa (talk) 20:49, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

There are two issues here:

1. one, is the name with the village name more common than without: is బమ్మెర పోతన more common than పోతన in the sources? The answer seems to be no.
2. two, how should the name be written in the English script? Yes, under one system of romanization, త is transliterated 't' (and ట is transliterated 'ṭ'), but this is an academic convention. There is also another system of romanization, more common among the people, in which త is written as 'th' and ట is written as 't'. Both are valid. For an article like this, we should use the more popular name in English-language sources.

The second question requires some more investigation, but the answer to the first is clear. There is no need to include "Bammera" in the article name, it is a piece of information that can be mentioned in the article. Shreevatsa (talk) 05:25, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

@User:Shreevatsa: if త is written as 'th' and ట is written as 't', then థ is also written as 'th' . I am not sure whether Bammera is popular or not but we can include that in native name field of info box. Most of credible books on Potanaamatya were written in Telugu. So, I think proper Romanization should be used in this case. I can understand names of movies etc which go by common among the people. Any thoughts...? Nagarjuna198 (talk) 06:51, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
