Against Merge

edit

Although this article (and many other on Vedic rites) is in strong need of attention, I oppose merging Pravargya with the Soma sacrifice article. Although there is a correlation between the two, they are two completely different rites, with different developmental histories, and different purposes. The Pravargya, primarily, grew out of an independent and much smaller morning milk offering the the Asvins; is significant in showing the importance of the sun, Sv--often discounted--in early Vedic religion; and primary purpose was attaining the lustre of the sun, which has strong correlations to the notion of tapas, and asceticism. The Soma sacrifice is a whole different animal, and the correlation between the two rites was a later development. If both articles are actually worked on with real sources (I can point people towards Vesci, and Houben, two scholars that have written extensively on both of these subjects) they would contain enough information to easily justify their own articles.24.190.34.219 (talk) 06:54, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Asceticism and Tapas

edit

I don't have the time at the moment to update the article myself, but for information concerning the Pravargya and its connection to tapas and thus asceticism, I would also point people to Walter Kaelber, "Tapta Marga: Asceticism and Initiation in Vedic India".24.190.34.219 (talk) 13:26, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
