Wang Min?

edit

this source says that a Wang Min was UNSC President for June 2012, but the only Wang Min on Wikipedia is this one, I think. So I did nothing so far. --    = ? 10:14, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

No meetings

edit

I'm looking at the sources for the 1950s, and lots of the presidents listed have in fact held no meetings during their month. This reduces their significance, as they were presidents of the UNSC in name only. This should be noted somehow in the list, and I am not sure what would be the best way of doing this. Note them with a symbol (John Doe*, where it is stated that * means he held no meetings), colour them gray, or what?     = ? 12:18, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure that it's necessary. From what I understand, hardly anything ever happens in the UN SC in January every year, since that is kind of the "holiday month" for UN Permanent Reps. The UN SC only meets that month in cases of emergency. The significance of the President is going to be more or less depending on what happens in any given month. 6 names

edit

If someone could add the official names of the title of the president in the Official languages of the United Nations, that would be most appreciated. I did what I could with French and Spanish, but I'm not really certain about it. --    = ? 17:45, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

"changes too often to make this worthwhile"

edit

Good Olfactory, could you explain to me how is a single edit per month too often for it to be worthwhile? The current President should be named at the beginning of the article for ease of access - why should we make people have to scroll through over 60 years of UNSC Presidents, if they only want to know who the current office holder is? And yes, other representatives of the given country will probably take the seat of President during that month, but this is discussed in the Identity section of the article, and it is expected of the reader to understand this when seeing the name given in the infobox. --    = ? 15:00, 15 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Mainly because no one updates it in a timely fashion. Every time I go to the page (which is not that often, but a couple of times per month), it is out of date. If users are going to update it in a timely fashion, then fine. But I haven't seen it happening. Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:53, 16 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, I still think that slightly outdated is better than non-existent, but we can agree to disagree. I will try and update the infobox and lede in March as soon as possible. --    = ? 10:58, 16 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
If it's included, but not updated in a timely fashion, then the page is somewhat wrong for significant periods of time. If it's not included, then the pages is more correct during those times. Good Ol’factory (talk) 21:28, 17 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

March update

edit

It states here that Russia has assumed the Presidency, and it states here that Churkin is the head of the Russian mission, but to put the two together and claim that Churkin is the President of the UNSC for March would be not really encyclopedic. No direct sources yet. --    = ? 10:34, 3 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Lost sources!

edit

The UN site has changed, so all is unsourced up until 2005. I haven't found different sources yet. --    14:23, 9 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

TITLE SHOULD BE MODIFED

edit

The title of the entry, in my opinion, should be changed into "Presidency of United Nations Security Council". Users most likely will look up the keyword presidency rather than president.

Another issue, as has already been discussed, is the name of the president for each month. Theoretically, the president changes at every meeting -- often during a meeting -- and the permanent representative (PR) of the member country that holds the presidency is not necessarily the president at each and every meeting. In the case of the Dominican Republic for April 2020, the PR, Francisco Antonio Cortorreal, does not preside over any meeting of the SC at all. There is a special envoy, Jose Singer, who is in charge of SC affairs of the country.

So why don't we change the title and attach the name of the PR only to reflect the fact that the person is head of delegation of the said country?

My understanding is that a certain member country holds the presidency for the month, and the president can be either the PR, a special envoy, or any other official that is recognized by both the state and the Security Council. In UN practice, anyone who seats on the seat of the president is addressed as such. The official website of the UNSC only talks about the presidency, not the president. 'left stub behind'

edit

Reywas92 and anyone else who may see this, I think, given the expansion I just gave, and I plan to expand it more later, it's no longer a stub w/o the list (well, I didn't think it was before, but anyways...). Would you object if I re-split the list? Eddie891 Talk Work 15:32, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to bring the article to GA and the list to FL, FWIW, so any suggestions as to how to improve the article are appreciated Eddie891 Talk Work 15:33, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
If it continues to expand that may be reasonable but as an FLC regular, it's still fine to have multiple sections of prose before getting to the tables. Plus the list still requires a comprehensive lead so there'd be unnecesary duplication there. One possibility for condensing the table would to have years as rows and cells as columns, then combine the country and name. Reywas92Talk 19:58, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Reywas92, Yeah, I can see that. I'd just think the Presidency article will eventually outgrow the list, given that I still have several articles and a book to incorporate, but I'll ping you again when it reaches that point. I'm a little unclear what you mean by having the rows as years and cells as columns... could you maybe clarify some or do a demo here with a bit of the code? Also, do you think it makes sense to put images outside of the table on the right hand side like Superintendent of the United States Military Academy? Very few of the presidents have images. Anyways, thanks for responding, and sorry to have more questions. Eddie891 Talk Work 20:23, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Oh I mistyped, I meant months as columns! So it could have 12 columns and 74 rows (possibly split for ease of editing). While that would reduce length substantially it would be fairly wide but those with multiple people could have <br> tags though. I'd probably avoid people pictures in general unless there are a just few long-serving people who held it several times. Thanks for your work on this, it's been in my watchlist for years! Reywas92Talk 20:32, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Well if a split isn't going to happen, we might have to move back to President of the UNSC, but I think it's apt to wait and let the page settle. I'm also indecisive about how much information to put, and am leaning towards only mentioning issues that the president has been specifically mentioned to have a large role in Eddie891 Talk Work 22:02, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Reywas92, What do you think about the content part of the article now? I could go into more detail based on various sources about the function and more minutiae about the role if you think it's merited, but I don't think that it needs it Eddie891 Talk Work 13:50, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Looking good! I haven't read the sources though so can't comment on minutiae. Reywas92Talk 04:03, 29 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Separate page for 1949 to 1999

edit

Can we move the list of presidents from 1949 to 1999 to a separate page? There is so much data on this page that it is not very user friendly because of how much scrolling is required to get to current/recent information. Perhaps a dedicated page for 1949 to 1999, and another for 2000 to 2020 with this page showing list from 2021 onwards. Thoughts and feedback? // sikander { talk } 🦖 04:02, 31 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
