Visit

edit

I will visit this place by boat soon. I will take many nice 8 megapixel images.

I do not know why it has this name. No mammals can live there as there is no adequate shelter for the babies. There is not enough food there for any rodent to live on. Even worse, flooding at high tide during storms, floods this low land island and the island can disappear for a few hours under the waves. So, that is why no Rats or Mice or any other Mammal can live there. Most residents are birds who sleep there or perch there. I have never seen any birds nest there. Just birds bones. The island become heavily used in the late Spring and Summer. Most go there to fish off it's east side where they cast their lines to catch Striped Bass. The east side has a cliff like shape and is perfect for such casting. Others go there to Sunbathe or swim. The NY Parks dept. put a trash can because so many people littered. The place is strewn with garbage like much of Pelham Bay Park.

Area of rat island

edit

I found it quite difficult to get any rough sense of scale from the article, so I used to coordinates provided to go to Google maps and used a distance measurement applet to approximately measure the area of what I found... came out at 0.53 acres or 0.002 square kilometers. I have added the information to the article that the island is approximately half an acre in size. However I cannot figure out how to provide a link to the applet in the state of measurement so anyone who cares and feels it appropriate may please cite this info properly..

For Sale

edit

Owner Red Brennan who lives in Jupiter Florida is the owner of Rat Island and it does not belong to NYC. When I wrote this article years ago, I added that fact but some Deletionist erased the truth. The NY Daily News says it is 1 2/2 Acres. Brennan wants $300,000 for this barren floodland. Supercool Dude (talk) 17:57, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Worthless Island

edit

My cousin who is a Lobster trapper who asked if he could rent the island and he answer is no.

This island is worthless, it has no mining rights. The cobblestone ruins on the island are historic and protected by antiquities laws. The small amount of topsoil there has been contaminated by Red Brennan's marine construction work done there in the 1970's. The soil there must be abated and remediated and that will cost a fortune! To place a house on this island, the house would need to be placed on four huge steel reinforced concrete pylon piers that would stand 20 feet taller than the highest point on Rat Island! Such a house would cost many Millions of dollars. The EPA would cancel any plans for building any kind of building. No power, no gas, no freshwater, and people who will still think this island is public land will have to be chased off by the NYPD Harbor Patrol.

The late John Barron Sr personally told me and others that Red Brennan stole millions of dollars in steel sheeting at night that was on barges to be used in the World Trade Center seawall, and sold it to him. Barron built his seawall out of the sheeting and Brennan used the money from Barron to buy Rat Island. I have multiple witnesses.
