Offence

edit

" he has caused offence by mocking various groups and individuals, including ethnic minorities, women, the Queen Mother (whose death occurred hours before the recording of his show Standing Room Only), and himself"

He has caused offence by mocking himself? No he hasn't; that's just a stupid attempt to say "it's ok to be racist as long as you laugh at yourself as well". I am removing it

Here we go

edit

There is little evidence for parts of this piece (e.g. the 350,000 audience figure which has been removed). Also, it was of questionable neutrality. User:Mr_magoo 19:08, 25 May 2005

Small edit

Small edit to the first paragraph - namely putting 'spoon-basher' in quotation marks. Midwinter 22:00, 12 November 2005 (GMT)

It could use clarification on who exactly is this "spoon-basher", as the article doesn't currently mention anything further about it. --212.94.80.106 14:06, 3 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

If Roy was born in 1945 was he really working mens clubs in the 1950's as stated ?

Pronunciation of "fuck"

edit

Brown pronounces the word 'fuck' as 'fook'. He stated in a documentary that he does this to make his repeated use of the word seem more cheeky and less offensive.

This doesn't seem to make sense. He's from Middlesbrough, of course he pronounces it "fook". How (and to whom) would the normal Northern pronunciation make word seem less offensive, and anyway why would he care about that given that his whole act is a deliberate celebration of "offensiveness"? Unless some kind of source can be produced for this alleged comment in "a documentary" the sentence should be removed. Flapdragon 00:47, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

completely disagree with this strange idea that all Northerners say "fook". Whenever someone quotes the Gallagers or The Beatles they say "fook". These people say fuck! Fuck fuck fuck! Brown says fook, they say fuck. I suppose it could be less offencsive in the same way that Father Ted uses "Feck"--Crestville 19:13, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, everyone knows that Northerners say "fuck", whereas Southerners say "fack" (as in "fack you, you facking cant!") - just see any edition of Viz magazine. 217.155.20.163 18:59, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Place of origin

edit

Oh I love the fact that Chubby's place of birth has been changed from Middlesbrough to Redcar & Cleveland (even though Redcar & Cleveland didnt even exist at the time of his birth). He was born in Grangetown, part of the Eston Urban District (a district is JUST an area of Council and not a TOWN), Under the Local government of Middlesbrough, part of the Middlesbrough Urban area. He was/is anything but Redcar and/or Redcar and Cleveland for that matter.

Also, on a recent visit to Scarborough I saw him live, he made a joke about the estate he was born in, at Grangetown, in Middlesbrough!! If he says hes from Boro than I agree. Grangetown is omly part of "Redcar & Cleveland" for the purpose of council and local government, its is Physically merged/connected/co-existant etc. with Middlesbrough. It is Middlesbrough regardless of administrative boundaries. --dj_paul84 20:10, 16 August 2006

I was born and brought up in that area - letters always said "Grangetown, Middlesbrough, Cleveland".

By the way - despite his and my surname being Vasey and both of us were born in Grangetown, we (Roy "Chubby" Brown and myself) aren't actually related - my dad's family came from Whitby! Arthurvasey (talk) 19:29, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Cleveland only existed from 1974 - 1996, so he wasn't born in Cleveland. Jim Michael (talk) 19:52, 5 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Not a bad article so far, but glaring inconsistencies when compared with his autobiography. I'll attempt some cleanup later. Everybody... your homework for tonight is to read this fascinating book! 82.42.100.116 14:09, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

His act

edit

This article says that Brown's material is highly racist and sexist. Is this really true? I have never seen his act but I understand he is considered controversial mainly because he is incredibly rude, not because he is a racist. It would be good to have this clarified or at least explained. 81.104.5.90 16:40, 23 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you, there are no references to back up the claim that his material contains racism. So erring on the side of caution I have removed this word, because the article is a BLP. C 1 (talk) 16:53, 8 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
What references do you need? It's akin to questioning whether the EDL has a racist agenda. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.29.178.71 (talk) 03:47, 12 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
No it's not. What you're implying is akin to saying evidence of wrongdoing isn't required in a court of law, just a belief of wrongdoing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:6C5A:657F:E631:740A:7BF7:46B6:F763 (talk) 21:40, 27 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sourced. IMDb may not be great, nor comedycentral, but it's the best we've got. Bear in mind we are satisfied with IMDb for most Hollywood actors. --Rodhullandemu 16:37, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Neutrality

edit

Okay; I see that the tag has been removed. Here are my reasons for placing the tag regarding neutrality:

  • The lead is quite negative, not making any reference to his achievements or any positive points.
  • "his foul mouthed approach" Not only a colloquialism but just a negative and poor way to define his language.
  • "His ribald act causes offence to many, yet he still maintains a strong fan base" Ribald? Have you seen the wiktionary definition of this? The "yet" here seems to question the fan base in consideration of his behaviour.
  • This section is generally negative, with no sense of balance. Interestingly, "Success as a blue comedian" barely makes any references to actual success or accomplishment.

Just something I noticed when reading the article. If disputed neutrality is initself disputed, then at least try to make the wording more professional. Cheers? Ashnard Talk Contribs 11:43, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. In an article such as this, it can be difficult to tell whether the article is being criticised for being too fulsome or too negative. But now we know, we can do something about it. It'll go on my (too long) list. --Rodhullandemu 11:57, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I was just about to read the autobiography and I'd thought I'd give the article a look. Cheers. Ashnard Talk Contribs 12:03, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I hope there's some useful information in it. More biographical information would balance the article against a relentless recital of his comedy and offensiveness. Also the tone of the article could do with a tidy up but even on a cursory examination some of the content is difficult to source, and copyvio to boot, so I will try to deal with that. --Rodhullandemu 12:32, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Royston Vasey vs Roy Chubby Brown

edit

There's a difference between the two not that you would know it from reading this article. Roy Chubby Brown is a comedy character as with Keith Lemon - played by Leigh Francis or Al Murrays pub landlord. While most of the references incorrectly use his comedy stage name - this one from the BBC [1] shows him using his real name Royston Vasey for a court appearance. A better distinction needs to be made between the two particularly for the personal life section. Fraggle81 (talk) 13:24, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Real name

edit

The article says he was born Royston Vasey (with a link that is no longer working). Is this true? Free BMD has a Roy Vasey registered in 1945 but no Royston Vasey. Southdevonian (talk) 15:04, 21 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

not much I can do by way of proving this, but I thought you'd like to know anyway: he had piano lessons from my mother, & babysat me & my sister a couple of times. he was 'roy', short for 'royston'. but I'm struggling to believe that there's no mention here or in the article of the co-opting of his name for the fictional town in 'league of gentlemen'; why's that, then?

Reverted edits by Materialscientist regarding the difference between Brown and Vasey

edit

Brown is a character created by Vasey and there is a difference, The lead section is wrong but as it has some references thrown in that show he is Roy or Royston it has been reverted to that version. I would draw your attention to the fact this is a BLP and needs correcting. The whole article refers to him as Vasey. Please stop hiding behind huggle - saying that content was removed without explaining why, it was clearly put the first time in the edit summary that Brown is a character portrayed by Vasey then again with further explanation when reverted. Going straight to a block after 2 edits with an edit summary for "Vandalism" is seriously questionable. 2A02:C7C:7067:1500:F071:96C9:1760:99D3 (talk) 00:48, 5 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Brown or Vasey?

edit

This article switches between referring to the subject as "Brown" and "Vasey" apparently at random. I don't know which is correct but it is confusing and off-putting, either it should use one or the other consistently or there should be a clear and obvious contextual distinction (e.g. perhaps using "Brown" when the context is him as a performer and "Vasey" at other times).
