Is there reason why Ryan is a "main character"? He doesn't seem more important than some other characters. --Brandon Dilbeck 23:38, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

The cast of this show is pretty large and it changes frequently, but BJ Novak (who plays Ryan) is a wrtier-producer, so it's unlikely his character will leave the show as other actors who don't also write for the series have. It's not neccessarily that he's more of a 'main character' than some of the other regulars (Phylis and Stanley are in almost every episode, yet they aren't in the opening credit sequence), it's just that, when the show started, the producers made him one of the main characters and that decision is reflected in the credits. I think the show has evolved somewhat, it now has kind of a revolving-door cast that keeps it fresh but also makes the opening credits seem somewhat outdated.

I have to agree with Brandon that Ryan is not exactly a main character on the show. Usually, a "main" character on The Office has a limelight role in every episode, like Michael, Jim, and Dwight. There are several episodes where Ryan is merely "background scenery," like Phylis and Stanley. Just thought I'd point out that B.J. is not the only writer who is a characther - writers also play Kelly and Toby (and a few others, who don't work in the office and are one-shot or rarely seen, like Dwight's brother Mos, and the Diversity Day presenter Mr. Brown). I can see why they weren't credited in the first season, as their roles evolved later in the show, but I still find it odd that by season 4, noone has been added to the credits. This has frustrtaed me I always thought that they shouls update the credits, like get rid of Ryan as a main character and make Andy one instead. Also, Ryan hasn't appeared in an episode in a while and since the 4th season and been a background character anyway. However in this article he must be credited as he is on the show. Dunder Mifflin

Ryan and Michael

The majority of the article about Ryan and Michael seems to completely miss the point.. Michael doesn't have a crush on him and wouldn't have sex with him, he's just trying so hard to impress and flatter Ryan that he comes off completely wrong. The way the paragraph is written it makes Michael seem really gay, which bypasses the crux of their relationship pretty much completely. Michael wants to be Ryan/have Ryan admire him/have Ryan like him so he tries to compliment him constantly and be what he thinks a best friend would be. He doesn't have a crush on him, he's just so socially inept that he keeps implying it accidentally. I think it should be rewritten, it's pretty inaccurate as is.

Character motivation is a matter of viewer interpretation. It's possible Michael was motivated by any number of feelings. Perhaps he doesn't even want to be Ryan's friend and is just trying to advance himself in the social hierarchy of the office! There's evidence for that interpretation, as well as numerous others, including your own. All that we can do is describe Michael and Ryan's behavior towards each other, and I believe that the section about Michael does a good, thorough job of it. Also, the word "mancrush" describes a feeling of friendship, not a romantic or sexual feeling. UranianPoet 17:52, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

if he has no sexual feelings for Ryan, why does Michael do the following:

• Declares "I would definitely have sex with Ryan"
• Sends Ryan kisses and calls him the belle of the ball
• Says loudly that he wants to see Ryan put a hot dog in his mouth (Beach Games deleted scene)
• Pins Ryan down on his lap, which he earlier says whoever sits there would know it's a real male Santa
• Squeezes Ryan's nipples
• Asks Ryan when they're sleeping together "Do you miss us?" (Night Out deleted scene)
• Says that he will miss Ryan the most after he dies (Safety Training deleted scene)
• Stalks Ryan and constantly talks about how attractive he is to Carol (Diwali deleted scene)
• Repeatedly awards Ryan "hottest in the office", indicates how hot he is in his diary, calls him a gorgeous young man (Crime Aid deleted scene), and numerous other occasions

Jim vs. Ryan
