Hi

The article states: "The name comes from the combination of two suburbs, Sandown and Bryanston, both of which were named after places in the United Kingdom." This is what I was taught at school (I attended Bryanston Primary School).

I recently found this web page http://www.station15.org.za/get_content.php/public_history_sandton.htm which states "Sandton derives it’s name from Zandfontein – an English simplification of this Afrikaans name. A memorial stone on the graves of the Esterhuysen Voortrekker family (of the Zandfontein farm) still stands in the suburb of Strathavon (off South Rd)."

Can anyone provide more evidence of either of these claims?

I grew up in Bryanston but moved to another part of Johannesburg before the city of Sandton was established. As I recall the reason given for the choice of name is that it was a combination of Sandown and Bryanston. I believe this to be correct because the word Zandfontein is not a root for sand and ton.

Zandfontein when Anglicised would in fact be Sandton as "fontein" is commonly used to denote a town or settlement exactly like "ton" is used, and "Zand" is obviously just Anglicised to "Sand"

Innaccurate data

At the Tourism section, it says: "...the centre, with some 144,000 m2 of shopping space, is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere (behind Chadstone Shopping Centre).[9]". However, Unicenter (shopping), in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is larger than both, with a surface of 239.000m2, as it can be seen on Spanish wiki: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicenter_Shopping. And the official website: http://www.unicenter.com.ar/pages/historia.html. --Lautaro Tessi (talk) 16:41, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
