  • Source: GamesRadar+ states that Saw: Genesis is "a prequel set 100 years before" John Kramer became a serial killer.

  • @Umais Bin Sajjad: Please propose a new hook, as the original one (which I've now struck), fails WP:DYKFICTION as being a hook about an in-universe fact that does not have a relation to the real world. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 07:54, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have proposed new hooks focused on gameplay mechanics:
ALT1: ... that in Saw: Genesis, one player can see the whole maze from the start while the other three have to uncover it as they escape?
Source: Shacknews reported that the map is procedurally generated, that the Judge has the full layout immediately revealed, and that the survivors must explore to remove the fog of war.
ALT2: ... that in Saw: Genesis, the player who sets traps is physically vulnerable and can be overwhelmed by the players trying to escape?
Source: Shacknews reported that a careless Judge can be overwhelmed by survivors using weapons found in the level. Umais🗣 21:15, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. However, I don't see either hook as being interesting to a broad audience either? They seem more like describing game mechanics rather than something that would actually attract eyes from people otherwise unfamiliar with the game. To be honest, this probably doesn't work either. If a video game is based on a property, isn't it kind of expected for a character from the original to also appear in that video game? I'm feeling it might be more interesting for fans of the franchise than the general public. I just took a look at the article and nothing came to mind, but maybe another editor could help chime in with another hook proposal? Asking for input from either 1brianm7 or Gommeh who have done some video game-related hooks in the past. Otherwise, ALT3 might be our best option, but I'm not willing to sign it off. Nothing else in the article stands out to me. From the GameSpot article, the fact that the game was accidentally revealed on Steam prior to its announcement could be of some interest (though it's not currently in the article), i.e. ALT4: ... that Saw: Genesis was announced hours before it was intended to be?, or something like that. Other possible angles that stood out as possibly hooky if added to the article was the developers trying to not make a Dead by Daylight clone, GameInformer saying that they would've expected a single player game considering the franchise, or some mention of reviewer anticipation of the game (though I'm not sure if that last one is MOS:VG compliant. 1brianm7 (talk) 12:22, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Video games being leaked before their official announcement is actually pretty common these days, but given how not all people or even gamers are familiar with leaks, that could be a possible option with a reword. I'm willing to review the article but leave the final decision on ALT4 to another editor. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 00:30, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the input. I have added the Steam info, but kept it brief since it should not be overemphasized per MOS. If reviewers think this angle works, a cleaner wording could be:

  • The article is new enough and adequately sourced, with ALT4 (the only hook fact currently under consideration) cited inline and verified in the source (GameSpot is no longer treated as a green source for various reasons, but for this particular case I don't see why it is unreliable). A QPQ has been done. The issue is that ALT4 is not directly stated in the article: the article says that the game appeared on Steam before Summer Game Fest, but not the specific "premature reveal" wording. ALT4a (I've renumbered it as such) is closer to the source and article, but loses the hookiness because it is no longer clear from the wording that it was a premature reveal. Both the hook and article will need to be adjusted. As mentioned earlier, the other options have been rejected due to not meeting DYKINT. Once the issues with ALT4 and its variants are addressed, I will have to ask for a second opinion from another editor on interest as I am not sure if the hook appeals to non-gamers or not. Thank you for the review and comments. I have adjusted the prose and revised hook could be:
ALT4b: ... that Saw: Genesis appeared on Steam in an "apparently premature" reveal before its Summer Game Fest presentation?
Source: GameSpot. Umais🗣 06:48, 18 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I'll ask for a second opinion on ALT4b's interest. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 05:21, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just checked ALT4b and it checks out with the "premature reveal" angle added. ミラP@Miraclepine 21:21, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
