Orphaned references in Shawn Mendes discography

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Shawn Mendes discography's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "BPI":

  • From List of music recording certifications: "The BPI". British Phonographic Industry. Retrieved 2013-11-19.
  • From British Phonographic Industry: Gallup (4 February 1989). "The Top of the Pops Chart" (PDF). Record Mirror: 4. Retrieved 16 July 2010.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 16:29, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Singles from Shawn Mendes

edit

@Hayman30 and Ss112: Should "Where Were You in the Morning?" be listed as one of the singles? IP was also edit warring on that page, and was reverted, although the song is still listed as a promotional single on this page. I'm assuming that "Youth" and "Nervous" are definitely singles, although to my knowledge only "Youth" had a separate digital release. Jc86035 (talk) 11:52, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

It is and has always been listed as a single. Just because petty IPs removed it doesn't make it a promotional single. As long as a source calls it a single, it is a single, it doesn't have to be pushed to radio or a standalone release. Please check the sources on the album page. Hayman30 (talk) 12:04, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Apparetnly an IP sneakily removed it ([1]) back in January. If you don't mind, please help moving the song back into the single section. Also, I think "Under Pressure" was sourced as a single too, and I believe Ss112 added it. You can check the subsequent changes made by the IP. Hayman30 (talk) 12:09, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Hayman30: None of the four sources for "Under Pressure", except possibly NewNowNext, seem to be appropriate (and that article only uses the word "single" in its subheader and nowhere else). iTunes automatically labels one-track releases as singles, so that's only verification that the release exists. The other sources do not appear to be major publications; one doesn't appear to have editorial control, and the other is a radio station's blog. I'm not sure about this. I think the IPs could be right for some of these (particularly considering the small amount of time between the release of "Youth" and the release of the other two tracks), although their inability to properly communicate their reasoning doesn't help. I don't think I've edited these articles before, though. Jc86035 (talk) 14:16, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I'm not sure if "Under Pressure" is a single as I did not add that, Ss112 probably did. The other songs, "Youth", "Where Were You in the Morning" and "Nervous" are definitely singles though, and there are sources to back it up. If the IPs don't agree, they should provide their own sources that would suggest otherwise. Hayman30 (talk) 14:31, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Hayman30 and Ss112: It seems to have happened again at some point; all of it should be fixed now (except for an inconsistency with whether Under Pressure#Shawn Mendes version was or was not released as a single). I've added a hidden comment at the bottom of the main singles table. Jc86035 (talk) 14:13, 16 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Jc86035: I hadn't even noticed. However, I've amended your note to read that changes should be proposed on the talk page. Saying "please provide a reason in your edit summary" is giving IPs the easy way to say something weaselly like "it's not a single! A single is [this] and it didn't have that" and think that that suffices. Also, they may think it's justified to edit war over what is/is not a single, and the amount of times this has been changed now is getting to be a bit of a joke, so best to just say go to the talk page and revert any removals outright for not having consensus to do so. I've also removed columns from the promotional singles section that now had no chart entries in them. (Thanks for the pings, but the page is on my watchlist so no real need. Not sure if it's on yours.) Ss112 14:27, 16 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. (I've changed the "Under Pressure" cover to promotional single.) Jc86035 (talk) 14:29, 16 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Hayman30 and Jc86035: Just letting you both know we now have another revisionist, CountyCountry, who believes "Under Pressure" is a single and has added it again to the singles section. (Pinging you both as I don't know if you follow this page. I do, so no pings needed. Thanks.) Ss112 18:54, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Call my friends

edit

So call my friends had no radio release as a single, and I checked all of it, perhaps the sites just called it wrong. Rapper0212 (talk) 01:33, 13 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Rapper0212: Radio release is not required for a song to qualify as a single, and you cannot dismiss reliable sources simply because you think it's "wrong". Please see the discussion at Talk:Wonder (Shawn Mendes album)#Call My Friends. Thank you. Hayman30 (talk) 06:07, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
What happens to sources misnaming it? Rapper0212 (talk) 06:13, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Rapper0212: I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. Your question is based on the presupposition that the sources "misnamed" it, which is completely baseless and unfounded. Hayman30 (talk) 06:22, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
So just because a reliable source misinterprets it as a single, it is? That makes no sense really. Shawn teased it with another song the same way, why is that not a single? Rapper0212 (talk) 06:26, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Rapper0212: Again, you're hinging on the presupposition that the source made a "misinterpretation", an allegation which you have yet to provide any evidence to support. A reliable source referred to "Call My Friends" as a single, thus it is a single, that makes absolute sense. The other song isn't a single because no source called it a single, it's as simple as that. I'd encourage you familiarise yourself with WP:V if you're still confused. Thanks. Sorry? 2602:306:249D:DE79:5905:3DF5:FB46:A317 (talk) 15:23, 29 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Well, multiple sources called a song a single and then when I add it, somebody keeps reverting me. Rapper0212 (talk) 07:34, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
