We really need a photo of Sterling - is there a "WantedImages" page anywhere?? I have a screen cap from a Twilight Zone eppisode, but I don't think that woould qualify as fair use here... --Samatva 23:30, 30 July 2006 (UTC) Better than nothing. post it!Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Sholloway.jpg

edit

Image:Sholloway.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Land Before Time

edit

The movie The Land Before Time keeps getting added, then removed, then added again, ad nauseum. The WP article for this film had Sterling Holloway listed in the role of Petrie, but IMDB shows Will Ryan in that role. I've adjusted both this page and the film's page to reflect the correct actor in that role. I'm open to the possibility that IMDB is wrong, but it's usually very reliable on issues like cast lists. So please, if you're going to add TLBT back to this article, please give a citation to somewhere, anywhere, that has Sterling Holloway in any role in the film. qitaana (talk) 23:03, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

What about Kaa?

He did that one as well.

Dink, the Little Dinosaur

edit

All the episodes of Dink, the Little Dinosaur has no narrated by Sterling Holloway. somebody put Sterling Holloway. I don't think Sterling Holloway narrated in this show. I fixed this article without Sterling Holloway. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.55.89.17 (talk) 20:04, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

One user has been repeatedly tried to add Dink, the Little Dinosaur to this list. However this is erroneous. According to all episodes of Dink, The Little Dinosaur were no narrated of Sterling Holloway. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.101.61.39 (talk) 15:57, 23 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

The image Image:What's In The Box.JPG is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

The following images also have this problem:

Picture is misleading

edit

[Regarding the S. H. Reading Peter and the Wolf Picture] I am sure this picture has a place in this article, but IMO, it doesn't belong at the top. I don't know why, but I personally don't like it (at least at the top) and don't think it adequately defines who he is. For some reason, in this picture, he looks so much like a ventriloquist's dummy (no insult intended) that he immediately makes me wonder what it is he does and if he ever was a ventriloquist (which I don't think he ever was). I understand that it may be difficult to obtain a replacement, but I wanted to bring this out in the open so at least some discussion could be made and see if I'm the only one bothered by the unusual nature of this picture. Maybe it's the small size that makes it look kind of funny. No insult is intended toward his appearance in the picture; he's simply getting the audience interested in the book he is reading. Also, no ill implications directed at the kind contributor who provided the picture. 24.10.181.254 (talk) 23:42, 5 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

About the Relatives

edit

There's a mention of an adopted son Richard. Not to be confused with Richard Holloway a bishop in England. I seem to recall that there was a Frederick(sp.?) Holloway whom I thought also did the voice of Winnie The Pooh, but I can't find a reference. I wrote to Disney.com and they only help members. Maybe there's an archive dept. Regarding his mother, the 1910 US Census has the Holloway household consisting of Sterling, Sr, Rebecca Holloway, Sterling, Jr, Boothby, and a 70 year old Rebecca Boothby. The Elder Rebecca's birthplace is "Pennsylvania", with father being England and mother also Pennsylvania. Rebecca Boothby's death record from Georgia has her listed as passing on June 30, 1925, and her birthplace as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania around 1840, the daughter of a Daniel Boyce and Levinia DeHaveven. Jumping back to Sterling's mother's childhood in Philadlephia, we can find her in 1880 at 802 South Second Street in a household consisting of an Oyster Dealer named William Boothby, herself, and children named Mary, William, Mabel, and Rebecca (Sterling's mother).

Hence the maternal lineage goes Sterling Holloway, Jr -> Sterling Holloway Sr & Rebecca Boothby -> William Boothby & Rebecca Boyce -> Thomas Boyce & Lavinia DeHaven. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sagitta (talkcontribs) 22:59, 8 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

What is Wikipedia's policy on outing closeted individuals if they have been deceased for a significant amount of time? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.229.42.163 (talk) 02:22, 17 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia does not "out" people, because we just re-report what is already in reliable sources. As such, if some sort of outing was added to any page without appropriate source, that addition would likely be deleted. --Nat Gertler (talk) 03:48, 17 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Lifelong Democrat ?

edit

Please explain to a person outside the USA why this fact is relevant ? How did affect his art ? Who gives a... ? Okay, I give up. We have to be grateful, I guess, that there wasn’t a whole section speculating on Holloway’s sexual preference(s). Sigh. Two cheers, again, for The United States of Wikipedia.2001:44B8:3102:BB00:B46D:A792:3797:413D (talk) 06:53, 7 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Not everything need affect his art. Americans are free to be in whichever political party they chose. And he was open about, raised money for candidates. ClevelandExPat (talk)

Art Collection

edit

"Uncle Sterling" was a family friend, my father having served with him in Hey Rookie. When i was a boy, he encouraged my identity as an artist, passing his gallery catalogues down to me. I loved his house and knew that his collection was the most important thing in his life. I added a section on his collecting, but given wikipedia's standard of only allowing secondarily sourced information, my personal knowledge of his patron-hood of artists like Ed Kienholz, his pride in and love of his collection, and his reflections on the nature of art collecting can only be included if supported by secondary sources, which are sparse. These aspects of Sterling were profoundly transformative for me, so if any other editors have access to sources that delve more deeply into this aspect of his life I would appreciate their addition. One thing you can do is to post this information elsewhere -- you have a website yourself, and a page there, while not an ideal source, would be usable. (We tend to allow self-published sources as long as the person has some known expertise and the information is not about a living person; I don't know what realm you were an academic in, but if it was in the arts, that might be sufficient to pass the sniff test.) Then you can post a link here for someone else to integrate the material into the article.
Meanwhile, here is an article that names the piece which started his collection. This story (continued here) notes a few individual pieces. Oooh, here is a piece noting his art involvement significantly.... although the piece it best describes, you've already covered. I'm hectic at the moment, but you may want to integrate some information from some of these. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 15:17, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
