Black Comedy?
editSometimes film critics and reviewers do make a bit strange choices concerning the definition of a movie genre, but I can't imagine a world where this movie could be called a comedy, either black or any other sort. There's not a single comical moment in Burton's Sweeney Todd. A black comedy is basically a genre of cruel jokes, comical situations with grim background. It's surreal, all right, but there are no jokes in this movie. It's a pure musical thriller or even slasher. I suggest removing the words "black comedy" from the article. 94.77.130.12 (talk) 19:18, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
- No comedy? How about the songs "Pirelli's Miracle Elixir" and "A Little Priest"... there are certainly jokes in those songs. Even the subdued, shortened version of "A Little Priest" that's used in the movie is hilarious; it's full of jokes. 71.38.117.4 (talk) 02:25, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
To-do list per Peer Review
editGoing through the various reviews etc there are a few outstanding issues we still have to address, so I've listed them below. EyeSerenetalk 09:33, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Further plot reduction, if possible?
- Check for overlinking (we only need links that are relevant to context, and then only on the first instance). There's some work to do here :P
- Get hold of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (ISBN 1845767047)" and check for any extra info we can include from the book.
- Add a sound clip of Depp + HBC
- Check citations for consistent formatting
- Check sources for reliability, specifically:

Citation for the "1846" setting?
editI've been cleaning up a lot of the character info boxes for characters in Sweeney Todd (not just specific to the film version) because someone had gone through and added specific birth dates that did not match the story. I just noticed that the plot description in this article said it was set in 1846, which does not make any sense. The original story (which was written in 1846, perhaps this is the cause of confusion) was set in 1785. The musical stage adaptations have had a variety of settings, including modern times, but traditionally the story has always been said to occur in the late 18th century, and Burton's film appears to match this as well. The clothing styles are somewhat jumbled, but most of it seems to be late 18th century with a few anachronistic exceptions. The film has a child being executed for petty theft, which was ended in 1808, and execution of children in general was very rare by the mid 19th century. I've removed the 1846 date, but if there is a cite that the film version is supposed to be set in a specific year it should be provided.
Sondheim's Mistake...Should it be mentioned?
editIn the movie, death occurred within seconds of Sweeney's victim's throats beging slit. However, even in cutting both the cartoid and jugulars, unconsciousness occurs within ten to forty seconds, and death happens almost a minute later. This varies on a variety of factors, such as heart rate, depth of the cut, and how quickly the cut bleeds out. You must remember, the human body contains approxamately 5 quarts of blood. Should this be mentioned in the article?Latte freak (talk) 22:30, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
- No. It should be mentioned only if it was a concern of a critic or someone involved with the film and it is sourced. Films have plot "holes" but as they are works of fiction, they don't necessarily need to work under the laws of nature. BOVINEBOY2008 :) 22:36, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
I know this is years after the original posting but for reference anyway: I do believe it was the smashing of the skull on the floor, after falling through the trapdoor, that kills the victims - thus how the judge doesn't die straight away because there are several bodies already there that haven't been ground up yet; indeed, in one version of Sweeney Todd (though I can't honesty say I recall which one) their throats aren't even slit; they're just dropped down the trapdoor. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (film) → Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007 film) — The title is shared with at least one other film, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1936 film), thus it should be disambiguated per WP:NCF. Question: Is it proposed that Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (film) redirect to a specific one of the two films or that it become a disambiguation page? Big Bird (talk • contribs) 14:34, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
- I would think that it should either become a disambiguation page or be redirected to Sweeney Todd (disambiguation). BOVINEBOY2008 :) 14:50, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
- I would recommend redirecting to Sweeney Todd (disambiguation). One disambiguation page for the related terms is enough. Erik (talk) 15:20, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
- We should also make sure that articles that link to Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (film) are corrected to point to the specific film, depending on which film the link was intended for. Erik (talk) 15:23, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
- That shouldn't be a problem. I can do it once its moved. BOVINEBOY2008 :) 00:06, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
