Inclusion of the word Gypsy
editCourtesy @GizzyCatBella: I want the word "Gypsy" to be removed from the article for several reasons. First is the most reasonable for me: short descriptions should "be short – no more than about 40 characters (but this can be slightly exceeded if necessary)
" (WP:SDLENGTH; emphasis in original). We don't need include two synonyms there because it's redundant and increases the character count.
3. Even when used in a non-derogatory sense, readers don't need to know alternative names for something outside that thing's article. Wikipedia is marketed as an online encyclopedia, so people reading this can easily click on the link if they want to know some etymology or something.
It's late at night, so please excuse my grammar and tone, I'll copy-edit this later. ~~ lol1VNIO (I made a mistake? talk to me) 21:54, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Lol1VNIO - That’s fine, thanks. I disagree with you so we need input of others to determine consensus. - GizzyCatBella🍁 22:10, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
This is slur, has to be removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Baro Shero (talk • contribs) 07:10, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

- For reference that discussion was closed with the suggestion of taking the discussion to Talk:Romani people. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested ∆transmissions∆ °co-ords° 11:51, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
The word adds nothing to the article, and the link to an unrelated source seems like SYNTH. Simpler opening to lede without the material in brackets and simpler short description, both saying "Romani" is cleaner. If readers don't know what "Romani" means they can go to the linked article. - I've made minor change to the target of the second link to the Romani people article. It wasn't made to influence this discussion, happy to see if reverted if anyone thinks it inappropriate. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested ∆transmissions∆ °co-ords° 12:01, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
I agree that this slur should be removed. People can click through to the Romani article if they need clarification. The term is also less exact as different traveller peoples, such as Irish travellers, are also called "gypsies". Lastly, "gypsy" is an English term so is uncontextual in this article and unrelated to German and Polish slurs/terms (which are variations of "cingane" with a different etymology). God knows we wouldn’t need a debate on usage of a slur in this way in an article about a Jewish pogrom or African-American lynching. Vladimir.copic (talk) 12:37, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Looking at the Romani people article is this a variant of English problem? It's doesn't appear to be considered a slur by all Romani and Wikipedia is more than just the US. Either way I believe the proper place for such a discussion is at Talk:Romani people, as it would set precedent for other articles. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested ∆transmissions∆ °co-ords° 16:17, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
As a majority of editors in this discussion think this should be removed I’m going to remove it for now. Per WP:ONUS, it is on those seeking inclusion of disputed material to gain consensus for it. Vladimir.copic (talk) 21:27, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Some readers, specifically older readers, need this clarification. Not everyone knows what Romani is. - GB Michalkiewicz (talk) 11:57, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
- @GB Michalkiewicz: Mentioning the other name(s) is irrelevant for the article. This is unlikely the first Wikipedia article for many readers (and even unlikelier that it's the first time they see a hyperlink), so they should know that they can simply click on the link of words they don't understand. ~~ lol1VNIO (I made a mistake? talk to me) 12:22, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
- @GB Michalkiewicz --> Note - The consensus is to not retain the potentially offending word in the article. - GizzyCatBella🍁 14:16, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
