Criticism section?
editThere should be a criticism section given this man's overuse of autotune to disguise his lack of talent, and thus, by extension, the infiltration of autotune into the musical maelstrom and the damage it's done by enabling talentless hacks to take attention away from real artists. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.97.164.156 (talk) 21:10, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Common confusions of vocal effects
edit- Actually,
has nothing to do with pitch in music technology. "Envelope follower", not to be confused with "pitch envelope", as its name says follows envelope. In audio and music engineering, envelope is the amplitude information. (see ADSR envelope) Envelope followers are used in vocoders to extract amplitude information of a particular frequency band. However, it is just one component out of many which are needed for the modulation process. Modulation (found mostly in vocoders) is different from pitch correction. T-Pain uses Pitch Correction. (pitch correction software/hardware i.e pitch (as in frequency not amplitude)follower and corrector)The most used pitch correction software tools are Antares Autotune and Avox, Celemony Melodyne, Serrato Pitch'n'time, Waves Tunes etc.. The realtime software analyzes the pitch information contained in the human voice(live or recorded). Then, according to the user's harmonic scale settings or notes that the user hits on a keyboard, the pitch is corrected thus creating a corrected version of the original vocal line. It is also possible to control vibrato and formant of the resulting voice to a certain degree. The application was originally used to subtly correct pitch in faulty background vocals and occasionally lead vocals . With extreme settings you can achieve pseudo-robotic effects such as T-Pain vocals. A hardware version of Autotune, the AVP also by ala produces the same results. A good old example of extreme pitch correction effect use was the song by Cher "Believe". Without extreme settings, the effect is unnoticeable especially on long held notes. This is due to the fact that if you sing in tune, Autotune disregard the correct pitch. However, to accentuate the effect some artist sing a bit out of tune or the vocals are recorded in perfect pitch then set out of tune on purpose before running it through say Autotune or any other pitch correction software or hardware.
- Also, it is not:
- 1. A vocoder, which requires an input carrier(example: synth) and a modulator(example: human) voice.See Transformers, Kraftwerk, Herbie Hancock.
- 2. A talkbox, with is a horn driver connect to a tube which is placed in the mouth. A guitar or a synth can be connected to the talkbox. The notes played resonnate in the throat. Intelligibility is achieved by shaping the mouth and lips. See Roger Troutman and Zapp (band), Peter Frampton, Joe Walsh, Teddy Riley (producer).
- All three effects are differents. Though their resulting sounds may be similar to an untrained ear, they do differ.
Often artists (including T-pain himself), producers, musicians and just unaware people call any effect that produces a semi-robotic voice a vocoder. However, it is incorrect. I say semi-robotic because robotic voices would be something like Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" or Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock (song)" (borrowed from Kraftwerk) which were accomplished using vocoders.beatnframes10 August 2007
- In an article published in Sound On Sound the engineer on Cher's "Believe" said that the effect was a vocoder that was cut in on certain syllables. To the untrained ear it may sound like the Antares offerings, I suppose. Your comment is an interesting read but you really provide no concrete evidence that the T=Pain effect is auto-tune versus a vocoder. Eli lilly (talk) 01:13, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
I am not sure what article you are reading but the one I have in front of my eyes reads: "...The focus of what has turned from a purely technical pursuit into an ethical debate — one that's played out on the pages of general-interest media as well as in the audio trades — is not so much the digital audio workstation as it is the third-party plug-in from Antares Audio Technologies, Auto-Tune. The device — which had a parallel hardware version used live by Cher ". This can be found at http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct03/articles/vocalfixes.htm Also here : http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb99/articles/tracks661.htm you'll find this disclaimer: "STOP PRESS! Historical Footnote
Cher's 'Believe' (Dec 1998) was the first commercial recording to feature the audible side-effects of Antares Auto-tune software used as a deliberate creative effect. The (now) highly recognisable tonal mangling occurs when the pitch correction speed is set too fast for the audio that it is processing and it became one of the most over-used production effects of the following years.
In February 1999, when this Sound On Sound article was published, the producers of this recording were apparently so keen to maintain their 'trade secret' process that they were willing to attribute the effect to the (then) recently-released Digitech Talker vocoder pedal. As most people are now all-too familiar with the 'Cher effect', as it became known, we have maintained the article in its original form as an interesting historical footnote."
I hope that clarifies the whole Cher's vocoder myth. It is not a vocoder and has always been Autotune. Keep in mind a lot of producers and artists do not divulge the exact name of the tool they used to achieve a coveted sound.Which is quite understandable. It won't be too long until we find out T-Pain's exact pitch correction tool name.It doesn't matter whether it is Autotune or Melodyne. It's still pitch correction not vocoding. beatnframes18 November 2007
Never mind my last comment, here's T-Pain himself talking about Autotune. http://www.missinfo.tv/?p=240 (pardon the language on that site but the audio clip is all you need) This was on the Angie Martinez show. In short, he explains how people at first used to make fun of him for using Autotune, and now rappers are biting his style by using it on their records. Can't be more concrete than that. beatnframes18 November 2007

The following has been removed per Wikipedia guidelines for biographies.
- T-Pain has collaborated with other known producers for Britney Spears' upcoming album, due in 2007
- T-Pain appeared on a SOHH.com interview where he described Ray J's penis as "a huge meat." He then followed the awkward conversation with a "no homo," so his sexuality is almost saved.
If someone can source this information, it would be appreciated.

Occupation For T-Pain
editCan anybody here please change T-Pain's occupations to "singer, rapper, songwriter and record producer"? Because he's an R&B singer, not a rapper.

Change: "T-Pain, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer" to "T-Pain, is an American singer, songwriter and record producer" as well as remove "rapper" from his occupations.
T-Pain is not a rapper, he is a singer. He has never once rapped in any of his songs, yet when googling T-Pain, it shows him as being an "American rapper" when it should say he is an "American singer". Here's even a tweet from him recently regarding this. https://twitter.com/TPAIN/status/1263274851432910848
- Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the

- Then how do you explain "Rappa Ternt Sanga"? Sdekk (talk) 22:59, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
Occupation For T-Pain #2
editT-Pain has recently confirmed on his Twitter saying that he is not a rapper, so can anybody here please change T-Pain's occupations to "singer, songwriter, rapper and record producer"? https://twitter.com/TPAIN/status/1263274851432910848 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:19B:8401:3BC0:405F:FD98:C16A:C204 (talk) 03:33, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

T-Pain Article Change
editThere are only two things that need to be changed about this article:
1. When T-Pain used to be in a group called "Nappy Headz", he said that he joined the group in 1999, not 2004, so the "years active" thing in the infobox has to be changed from "2004–present" to "1999–present": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8zUCF2U0OE
2. Since T-Pain was a rapper for that group, can anyone here please change his music genres in the infobox to "Hip hop ⋅ R&B ⋅ pop rap"?

Request for comment
editHow should the first line of the article refer to the artist?
- Choice A: " Faheem Rasheed Fajm... is an American singer, rapper, songwriter and producer from Florida"
- Choice B: " Faheem Rasheed Fajm... is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and producer from Florida"
- Choice C: " Faheem Rasheed Fajm... is an American rapper, singer-songwriter and producer from Florida"
Please indicate your choice and reasoning below. -204.184.47.154 (talk) 17:48, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
- Choice A because rapping seems secondary in this case. Rather referring as a singer and rapper. The first album is Rappa Ternt Sanga. Which means rapper turned singer. But singer should be listed first. Rather putting singer, songwriter, or simply just singer-songwriter. Or we can put musician
