Talk:Table of biodiesel crop yields

Petrolium Club inflated figures

edit

most of the crops listed seem to be inflated by 2 US gal/acre more than the source list referenced, i'm not sure why this is. Roidroid (talk) 04:55, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

References to be added

edit

I'd like to refine the article with this data, and add the references sourced within http://www.solarbiofuels.org/biofuels/Templates/biodiesel.html as i believe it to be a better source than the current data source. It may take some time to get around to this so i'll just dump it here until i or someone else gets around to it. Roidroid (talk) 05:39, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion to change title

edit

Wouldn't a title along the lines of "Table of biodiesel crop yields" be a better name for the table? How would you go about changing it? I only mention it because it doesn't include ethanol yields. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jlefevre76 (talkcontribs) 02:32, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

I totally agree. Done. —Cousteau (talk) 09:45, 2 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Copaifera langsdorffii yield VASTLY overstated

edit

The article on the tree itself says that it is not a practical source of biofuel outside of the tropics. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:8003:E422:3C01:98DA:4D90:D2EC:9AA6 (talk) 06:51, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Mind adding a citation needed / verification needed template if that's the case? –Cousteau (talk) 09:16, 2 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
I agree, also the citations do not link to anything related to langsdorffii biodiesel production. It links to a journal article on medicinal uses and the other citation does not link to any article. 73.140.1.5 (talk) 21:54, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Algae (open pond) numbers are completely overstated

edit

The actual source for this entry in the table reviews lots of (estimated) production numbers, but 80.000 kg per year per hectare isn't ever mentioned as a finding, but is (loosely) mentioned as a postulated requirement for economical feasibility at the time of writing. The difficulty is that using even the most reliable data from this review is just speculating liberally with numbers at best. The larger-scale (but still only pilot studies) experimental ponds reviewed show algae production in the order of ~10g/m2/day (100kg/ha/day), with of lipid contents of at best 15%, for a rough estimated oil production of 15kg/ha/day. Even with a year-round perfect growing season (which isn't used in any of the articles), this would amount to ~5.500kg of oil per ha per year, instead of the 80.000kg listed in this table. So the most realistic estimate is almost 15 times lower than this table reports, and that's being optimistic. I propose the table is edited to show 5.500kg/ha/yr, and possibly some distinction is made to indicate that even this has never been shown at scale.
