Name standard

edit

is tharman shanmugaratnam's first name tharman or shanmugaratnam i ask bc his wikipedia article refers him by the name Tharman which appears to be his first name this is not standard for wikipedia and makes me think the guy who wrote the article just hated writing his last name which i find amusing "Born in Singapore, Tharman attended the Anglo-Chinese School before graduating from the London School of Economics (LSE) with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. (LSE later awarded him an Honorary Fellowship in 2011).[5]" compare to "Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Biden moved with his family to Delaware in 1953." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fivework (talkcontribs) 16:11, 15 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hold on ... this should not be part of Wikiproject India. It is simply not related to India. He was never an Indian citizen. He was never even raised in India.--SohanDsouza 04:40, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Picture of person

edit

Hi all. I find that the enlarged picture of Shanmugaratnam is rather distorted. I think it would be a good idea to get a new photo, or improve the picture.

Tan Wah Piow

edit

There is some references to him being a associate of Tan Wah Piow, a exiled dissent in UK and was subsequently questioned by ISD upon his return to Singapore in the mid 1980s. Does anyone have the link or reference?

Chinese name

edit

Please everyone. Instead of edit warring, just discuss here. It is best to start an RFC to decide this. No more disruptions to the page itself. --Lemongirl942 (talk) 09:14, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Is it necessary to include his Chinese name? As far as I can see, he has no Chinese ancestry at all, and the common language in Singapore is English. A source does say he has 2 variations of of his name in Chinese, but also states that they are just translations, with no mention if its official. Zhanzhao (talk) 10:08, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm not a huge fan of mentioning multiple names either, particularly in the infobox and lead. The usual convention is to mention the English name and a single foreign language "native name" if it is cited (See MOS:FORLANG). This btw seems like a translation to me so I'm not really interested in keeping it in the lead or infobox. --Lemongirl942 (talk) 10:22, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I agree with @Zhanzhao: There is no reason why a Chinese translation of his name should be included. There would be a basis for its inclusion if he were either 1) Of Chinese ancestry, or 2) If Singapore's national language and/or lingua franca were Chinese.
I would like to draw your attention to Lee Hsien Loong's profile on the official Parliament website: https://www.parliament.gov.sg/mp/lee-hsien-loong
As you can see, a Tamil transliteration of his name has been included in his profile (Tharman also has a Chinese transliteration in his profile), but Tamil obviously does not need to be included in LHL's Wiki article because he does not have any Indian ancestry. I therefore fail to see why people are so insistent to add Chinese to Tharman's page when his native name has already been included. If we have reached a consensus here, I would appreciate it if it could be removed. Tiger7253 (talk) 15:24, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Continual reverts

edit

Sgspeedo has, for some reason, been continually reverting my attempts to improve and update the lead section without giving an explanation as to why. Despite my attempts to initiate dialogue through the this editor's talk page, the reverts have continue with no justification given. The old version that it's being reverted to is problematic. It doesn't include any mention of Tharman being a former Deputy PM (a pretty significant detail to leave out) and has segments worded in a way which is now out of date. But it keeps being restored.

I'm happy to engage in dialogue if there's thought to be a problem with my updates. But, at the moment, I can't see what the problem with what I'm doing is or why it keeps getting reverted.

Made some edits for accuracy & substantiation - but was blocked and banned and bullied by haters

edit

A few questions -

(a) Religion - the citation for his religion being Hinduism is a world bank link. I amended it, but a legion of people reported me for it and undid my work.

(b) College in Cambridge - Are there any official CVs that stated that? If there isn't, it's not substantiated.

(c) Chairing of International Organisations - Some of it were in the past. It's chaired* not chairs. Who are these people blindly undoing the edits and insisting they are right?

(d) Linking to articles, adding citations - For all that painstaking work, I received messages accusing me of being the journalist of the articles I linked to.

(e) In the spirit of the open source community, why is this happening? I added information about his wife being the founder of Tasek. It's public information. Did anyone research on that before trying to ban me?

@Curiouscat17 : Replying you based on your section header, saying you was blocked / banned and bullied by haters. Based on
your helpdesk question, your account is not blocked nor banned, otherwise you will not be able to edit Wikipedia at all. What happened is that you attempted to edit Wikipedia while not logged in and the IP address you are editing from is banned due to other editors abusing Wikipedia using the same IP range. Stop casting aspersions on others when there has not been much conversations and also based on your assumptions.
On the other hand, I noted that some of your edits are fine and I will slowly reinstate some of the correct edits.
Thanks. ~ JASWE (talk) 10:09, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have screenshots? Thank you for seeing to this. I've already reverted back to my edits while respecting others' valuable inputs where relevant and valid, and I hope you can extend the same courtesy to me. If there is anything you do not agree with, let's have a proper discussion. Thank you. Curiouscat17 (talk) 10:12, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
If you are blocked while logged in, you may have been on an IP address that has autoblock turned on. For IP addresses it is usually used when the IP address(es) has been a problematic one or had been used by a problematic editor (not saying that it is you, just that IP address reassignments can be rather frequent). This setting blocks all editors, logged in or otherwise if they are accessing from that IP address.
Given that you can edit now, the block might have been a short one. I am not able to tell exactly the duration of the block as certain details from blocks from autoblocks are made private. If you are being blocked in a similar fashion in the future for a pretty long duration, follow the instructions at WP:AUTOBLOCK to request for an unblock. – robertsky (talk) 11:12, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to draw your attention to the latest changes made by a bot? So much for discussions and a talk page when someone else can come in and bulldoze everything. Curiouscat17 (talk) 05:09, 29 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
