A lot of conflicting information about the film's earliest release dates. Several books claim the film was screened at the Rio International Film Festival in 1965 and Cannes in 1966.

However, I would point to the AFI Catalog's background brief:

A news item in the 29 Apr 1964 DV reported that actress Janet Margolin’s next assignment was The Eavesdropper, to be filmed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and financed by Columbia Pictures Corporation. The 7 May 1964 issue noted that it was the first English-language production by Argentine director Leopoldo Torre Nilsson, although the majority of cast members were only fluent in Spanish. Principal photography was scheduled to begin 18 May 1964. The 5 Aug 1964 Var stated that Noelle Gillmor, who developed the translation dubbing technique known as “transonics,” was involved in the project from its earliest stages. During post-production in New York City, Torre Nilsson told the 28 Apr 1965 Var that Ms. Gillmor’s assistance reduced the time expended on “post-photography dubbing problems.” The picture had been chosen by the Argentine Film Institute to represent the country at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival but was replaced by a major studio release. Three weeks later, the 19 May 1965 Var announced that the Institute had voted Torre Nilsson best director of the year.

The 11 Jan 1965 DV and 24 Aug 1966 Var revealed that Torre Nilsson ended his relationship with Columbia after the company re-edited his picture. Subsequently, Royal Films International acquired distribution rights.

The Eavesdropper made its U.S. debut on 14 Sep 1966 at the New York Film Festival. Critical reception was mixed: While the 15 Sep 1966 NYT described it as “poetically sensitive,” the 19 Sep 1966 DV review found little to recommend. A news item in the 21 Sep 1966 Var claimed that the festival audience was equally unimpressed. However, the 2 Aug 1967 issue reported that Torre Nilsson was named one of the best directors of 1966 by Argentina’s Film Jounalists’ Association.

I have replaced the 1964 release claims and replaced it with the 1966 release dates, which are more definite. Until anyone can find earlier release dates that are reliably-sourced, we should refer to it as a 1966 film. Οἶδα (talk) 21:44, 18 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
