Talk:The Oprah Winfrey Show/Archive

Title

edit

The actual name of the show is The Oprah Winfrey Show (which currently redirects here), shouldn't this article be there instead? Oprah should redirect to the person, IMO. --Sketchee 07:17, Jan 27, 2005 (UTC)

I agree, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" is definately the correct name. --Millsdavid 23:50, 31 Jan 2005 Where has Oprah spent most of her life with how her mother or father shut up

Cultural References

edit

This section of the article is quite messy and frankly supliferous. It is in need of a massive clean-up at the very least. In fact I'm going to be bold and say this section should simply be deleted outright. TOWS is a popular TV show hosted by one of the most famous women on the planet. I'd venture to say the cultural impact of Oprah and TOWS may deserve its own article or section, but this "Cultural References" is by far NOT what we need. I vote for removal. Merge Oprahfication with TOWS

edit

The article Oprahfication has been nominated and seconded for deletion. However the article has sources and even though it is "neologism", the article documents an interesting social phenomenon in this age of self help. The contents should be merged with a current Oprah article instead of deleted. FeelsLikeHome 20:55, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

She also has been called an "Uncle Tom" of sorts, as she traditionally, though not continually, caters to her white audience.

Thats the last sentence in the 'Criticism' section. Just thought it was a strange passage, no source or specific incident cited or anything, but I'll leave it at that. --LeCorrector 03:47, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Texas Rancher Incident

edit

Does someone have adequate info to add a section on the incident with the Texas farmer lawsuit that caused the show to tape in Texas during the trial? All I know is Oprah made some statement "I'm not going to eat another hamburger" and sales of beef dropped. I don't know what the show topic was about. Dwp49423 15:42, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Request elaboration

edit

"In 2002, Oprah surprised people at a McDonald's drive-through. She encountered a very rude customer, and when he drove up she recognized him as her attorney." What exactly is this referring to? Did Oprah work at a drive thru as part of her show, or did she jump the counter and start raiding the kitchen while her attorney showed up independently? Terrible

edit

This whole article seems to focus on the show after it totally changed its format. How about a little discussion of its history? The 1980s and early '90s? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Commando303 (talkcontribs) 04:17, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Start date

edit

Is this correct? On the Saturday Night Live page, it lists Oprah having hosted the April 12 1986 edition- why would they have her on before she went national? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Saturday_Night_Live_hosts_and_musical_guests —Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.167.21.110 (talk) 19:05, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

creation @miracles: why everyone is looking for miracles in the wrong place!

edit

i wonder if you can imagine everyone truly understanding the concept of creation in the sense that we were all created from the same matter and energy, in the same 'big bang', and everyone and every thing in this universe and all the other universes were created by the same supreme being and the angel of creation? everyone looks for the miracles they need to believe and everyone misses the the everyday miracle staring them in the face every morning. when you study what the creator gave every one and every thing in this universe and you begin the understand that the 'muslim', 'christian', 'budist', 'etc', every rock, bush, insect, every 'thing' is made of exactly the same 'matter and energy', and there is no difference between any of his creations. if you were to ask nancy about ronnie during the last half of their relationship you would probably get the answer that she was able to look him in the face and see the only true everyday miracle, that he was a miracle of creation and if she looked long enough and hard enough she could see 'him' staring back. i wonder if everyone truly began to study themselves and their environment if they could begin to see the truth about creation and their own existence? the truth that there is no difference between us and everything that was created and the only true miracle. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.145.18.100 (talk) 21:19, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Exaggerated, Unsupported Ratings

edit

The opening paragraph states that the show "is the highest-rated talk show in American television history.[1]"

The link in the citation is busted. Perhaps the show WAS the highest-rated talk show; however, viewership has fallen off dramatically.

Section 5, "Ratings" states:

"The show averages about 8 million viewers per original airing and about 4.5 million for repeats.[citation needed]"

There's no citation that supports the 8 million viewer claim. Current Nielsen ratings indicate viewership of just over 5 million, down from twice that at it's peak.

http://nielsen.com/media/toptens_television.html

Exaggerating ratings by millions of viewers is embarrassing to Wikipedia and to Oprah. I'm going to change these paragraphs if no one objects.

Scrubs reference

edit

And I quote:

"In the 9th season of Scrubs some one can do a oprah sound alike and whuch she did by handing out paychecks."

Could someone please correct this? I have no idea which character impersonated Oprah, so I did not want to correct it in an incomplete fashion. Thanks. JukeJohn (talk) 20:22, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

presidents of the United State

edit

I hope I'm contectting the right people(Oprah Winfrey Show)I would love to see a show on John Hanson the first Black President of the Untied State and the other five Presidents before Grogre Washington. 76.171.13.231 (talk) 21:39, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Watrice WilliamsReply

This isn't the right place; try her website. John Hanson was not the first black president of the USA, and there were no presidents before George Washington. Hope that helps. --Rodhullandemu 21:43, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
