Differences between film and novel
editIn "The Outsiders" Ponyboy gets sick in the end but not in the movie, also it says they're supposed to attend a trial because Johnny was accused of man slaughter (he killed Bob when Bob was drowning Ponyboy), but in the movie they don't have anything about that and we don't know what is happening because of it.
- The film is an adaptation of the novel, which means things get changed around a bit. However, I don't think the differences are great enough to warrant a section on them. -Maverick 06:00, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- There is a section on the differences, at The Outsiders (novel)#Differences between the film and the novel. TheMadBaron 21:49, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
There is an extended version with the courtroom scene and Ponyboy being sick. I remember seeing them as a lead in to the tv series.207.241.137.116 (talk) 02:55, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
Japanese voice cast
editWho voices Johnny Cade in the Japanese dub of this film? Is it Ikue Ōtani (the voice of Pikachu on Pokémon) or Etsuko Kozakura (the Japanese actor that provides Littlefoot's voice in Japanese dubs of The Land Before Time films and TV series) or Rica Matsumoto (the Japanese voice of Ash Ketchum on Pokémon) or someone else? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.216.132.104 (talk • contribs)
Could you please tell me who voices Johnny Cade in the Japanese dub of this film? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.216.132.104 (talk • contribs)
Is there any real reference to the voice actors on the Japanese version? Someone should seriously look this up, I'm not sure if this info is reliable.
Suggestions
editJust wanted to add that Wiki says this article is too long and the plot section needs reducing. I'd like to add that my cousin used the Wiki entry as a pseudo "cliff notes" and asked for my advice (I'm a Professor, although not of literature). I think the extra detail will be useful for cliff-noting (is that a reasonable adverb?) the film by students. Cheers Pharmachick 02:30, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
Fan-made videos
editI've got a fan-made video now! I dubbed Johnny Cade with Littlefoot's voice from The Land Before Time films.[1]
- Sorry, but that was with poor quality. Here's the one with better quality.[2]
- Here's the full-length one with better quality and this time, the audio has better quality.[3]
I am watching the movie as I write this and have a hard time believing that the person or persons who wrote the plot watched the same movie! What's with this??? This is the 3rd movie I have looked at on WIKI -- while watching on netflix -- that has very little to do with each other! I ended up editing one movie plot because what was in WIKI was so far off -- I HAD to do it. *SIGH* I guess I just have to suffer through a bunch of junk. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 148.134.37.3 (talk) 01:08, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Cameos in rumble scene
editNicolas Cage and Johnny Depp have been added to the The Outsiders (film)#Cast section as cameos.
- Added 2008-07-03 by 24.26.44.74
- Removed 2008-07-17 by 75.157.255.167
- Added 2008-07-31 by 24.26.44.74, with two intervening edits
Before my removal of Cage, I searched for any pages to verify the cameo. I found a few, but none that appeared particularly reliable. After my removal was reverted, I reviewed the scene as suggested, on both YouTube and DVD. It's plausible that the actor indicated is Cage. The movie was filmed 25 years ago, and Cage did look different then (I watched a few clips of Rumble Fish). Unfortunately, such an identification without confirmation in the credits or elsewhere is original research. Flatscan (talk) 00:55, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure Francis Ford Coppola mentioned it on the commmentary for the new DVDs, but I'll need to go back and check to make sure. I have never heard of Johnny Depp being involved in the film at all; his first film role AFAIK was in A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. Morhange (talk) 03:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- I think that a mention in the commentary would be an acceptable source. While I was searching, I came across other unsourced trivia, e.g. Cage auditioned for the role of Dallas, leading to tensions with Dillon, that may have come from there also. Flatscan (talk) 01:21, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Heather Langenkamp
editHeather Langenkamp was only 19 years old when she made this film. Yet, she played the role of Mrs. Cade, the mother of Johnny Cade (Ralph Macchio). I believe that Ralph Macchio's character was that of a 16-year-old (or so). Does anyone know if this information is accurate? Even with extensive make-up and even though it's only a bit part, I can hardly believe that Francis Ford Coppola would cast a 19-year-old as the mother of a 16-year-old. Does anyone have any further information on this? Am I mistaken about any of these facts? Or is there an error in the article? Thanks. (Joseph Spadaro (talk) 17:07, 15 January 2010 (UTC))
- For the curious... IMDB shows that an actress named Emeline Denito played Mrs. Cade, and uncredited at that. Also shows that Heather Langenkamp's scenes were deleted. Mrs. Cade is only ever seen in silhouette in the film, while arguing with the silhouette of Mr. Cade, so any grown woman of any age could have played Johnny's mom.Jmg38 (talk) 12:06, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Overlinkage
editIt seems like the names of the actors/actresses are wikilinked multiple times. Isn't the policy to do wikilinks only once, the first time the word appears in the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Churchgoer251 (talk • contribs) 01:30, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
moderate box-office success
editThe introduction to the article states The Outsiders...
"performed moderately well at the box office, grossing $33 million on a $10 million budget."
In today's box-office obsessed culture, grossing a 'mere' $33million against a $10million budget might seem like only a 'moderate' success, but back in 1983, any film that grossed 333% of it's budget was considered a major success.
I left the line intact, but simply removed the word 'moderately'.144.140.233.204 (talk) 03:09, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

- Music
The original film score was composed by the director's father, Carmine Coppola; the main theme, "Stay Gold", was sung by Stevie Wonder. The original soundtrack included one rock song, Them's "Gloria."
Confusion over name of character Dallas/Dally
editI had to check the cast list to make sure that wasn’t describing two different characters as the usage would constantly alternate between the two names while other character names were consistent. Suggest getting rid of all instances of the nickname “Dally” in the article in favor of the more formal Dallas. 2001:B011:E607:3FC0:A887:2C6E:F364:8B44 (talk) 02:03, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
