Chucky

edit

I don't see the point of quibbling over the precise spellings such as "chucky air law", "chucky are la", etc; which is most accurate depends on both your Irish accent and your English accent; that's too many variables to control. WP:PRON says to avoid pronunciation spellings in any case. The transcription [ˈtʲʊki aːɾˠ ˈɫ̪aː] is in accordance with the Irish phonology article. If you want to add separate transcriptions for Ulster Irish, Munster Irish, and Connacht Irish, go ahead. However, adding English-spelling approximations, as a guide for Wikipedia users who don't understand IPA, is a lot trickier. "Chucky air law" is pretty accurate when said a Belfast-English accent, but unhelpful if not misleading for someone who doesn't know what a Belfast accent sounds like. The best reason to add pronunciation spellings is if they are widespread enough in their own right to be of encyclopedic interest. "Chucky" on its own is so, and I have added a reference for this. A side-effect is that it helps approximate the most impenetrable (for English speakers) part of the phrase. I suggest there is no benefit in debating over approximations of "ár lá", none of which is canonical: none gets more than a dozen google hits. jnestorius(talk) 15:12, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion

This article about a catchphrase. The phrase itself has not been written about in any detail by reliable sources, therefore the topic is non-notable. Scolaire (talk) 09:01, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree, see this discussion for rational. --Domer48 (talk) 09:22, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm removing this prod as well. Not an uncontroversial delete. Anything that requires discussion, as this does, needs an AFD. A little more work, sorry, but necessary. See Domer's link to the discussion for more details. -R. fiend (talk) 13:11, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

An IP has removed most of this section. I whole-heartedly agree - it was no more than a perpetuation of a very old joke. Scolaire (talk) 18:55, 15 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Peter Tosh

edit

Just wondering if anyone knows if this is what Peter Tosh is referring to in the song "Steppin Razor", when he says, "If you are a chucky Nobody chucky from me If you are a chucky, a chucky Nobody chuck from me, Yea" -does anyone know?

I moved this question from the article. I don't know the answer but I doubt it's related to this article. jnestorius(talk) 23:05, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
