THis article needs a major overhaul. I hurt my head reading it. i tried to fix some of it, but it needs to be re-done from scratch by someone who knows this truck better then I. Actually, after reviewing the above person's comment, i agree, it should be merged. And so it was done :)

Distributorless ignition
Toyota started putting these into the Tacoma in '98. This is the second time I've corrected it on this page, and someone keeps putting it back. My first Tacoma, which was a '98, used a distributorless ignition. It came from the factory that way. Primium mobile 01:28, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Redesign

Supercharger Output
The supercharger output figures in the article are highly questionable. - The article was vandalized a couple weeks ago and nobody caught it. Delete 'Aftermarket' section
I would like to delete the entire 'Aftermarket' section. Otherwise we will have to list everything from springs and differentials to fluffy dice. Every car can use aftermarket parts (some specific to a particular model, some generic), so why is the Tacoma special? Stepho talk 04:20, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
Truck Timeline Changes
1st: excellent work on your "non-hilux" pickup page.
2nd: your truck timeline at the bottom needs to be modified.
- pre 2005 Tacomas and earlier "pick-ups" should have the "Light Pickup" line heading (or mini-pickup).
- t100's and 2005+ Tacoma's, should be on the same line, with a line heading of "Mid-size Pickup". (as stated in the opening paragraph "The Tacoma was a compact pickup until a model redesign in 2005 when it was reclassified to a mid-size."
- both tundra generations should be on their own line, title "Full-size Pickup".

The following is incorrect :"The 2016 and 2017 model year double cab-short bed Tacomas are currently made in Tijuana (VINs starting in 3) and all other Tacoma configurations are made in San Antonio (VINs starting in 5)." I have a 2017 made in US DCSB (VIN-5). 1998-1999 Color missing

Third gen or just a really big facelift ?
Is the 2016 model year really a new generation? Toyota has been known in the past to splash "ALL NEW!!!" over facelifts. Editors then list that vehicle in WP as a new generation, only to find out a few months later that it was really just a facelift. The only way to really know is to see the model code. If it is in range N10 to N29 then it is part of the second generation. If it is N30 or higher then it is a new generation. - Stepho, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

, you keep deleting my clarification request. Is this or is this not a new generation? What proof do you have? So far you have given references that say it is the 2016 model year (which proves nothing) and that it is "all new" (which Toyota has often used on facelifts). Delting the clarifiation request is not dealing with it. If you can't offer any proof that it is a new generation then I will have to delete the entire section as unsubstantiated and replace it with a paragraph in the send gen section. model year vs calenadr year

I'll assume you are correct to change Tacoma to Tundra. What I don't understand is whether 2005 means the model year (ie Aug 2004 to Aug 2005) or the calendar year. My understanding is that Americans say "in 2005" to mean calendar years and "for 2005" to mean model years. You said "in 2005" but the generation changeover / redesign was in the calendar year 2004. Generations
Would it be clearer to give non-overlapping years for the generation headings? A 2015 Tacoma is 2nd gen, not 1st gen. Current article implies 2015 could be 2nd or 3rd gen.
1st gen = 95-04
2nd gen = 05-15

- Not sure why you think 2015 is first gen. First gen stops at 2004. Perhaps you mean there is confusion between second and third gen.
- Most WP car articles use calendar years because most countries do not use the US style model year system. However, vehicles that are sold only in countries that use the US style model year system (typically N.American countries) are allowed to use model years (except the production filed in the infobox - that is always calendar years and months). Currently this article is already using model years in its section titles and most of the text. Which specific part did you want to change? Stepho talk 10:01, 8 March 2019 (UTC)
- I'd like to also ask if it is acceptable in some way to shorten the names for model years. i.e. instead of "model years 2005-2015" like in the article could it be rewritten as something like "(MY 05-15)" NeVandCookies (talk) 20:07, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
- 'MY' is fine, as long as 'model year' is used in full for the first instance and it's reasonably obvious to readers that MY is shorthand for model year. Remember that non-Americans generally do not know what a model year is and may have trouble understanding what MY means.
- WP:DATERANGE covers how the numbers are used. Beware that non-American readers may have trouble realising that MY 05 means model year 2005 (which often means calendar year 2004 in their country). If you feel that 'model year 2005–2015' is too long, then I would recommend using 'MY 2005–2015' . Stepho talk 11:03, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
2016-2020 MY Model Codes and Generation?
There is a lot of conflicting information online about the 2015/08-onward Tacoma with regards to its generation and the chassis code(s) associated with it, much of which is nothing more than opinion or speculation. There is documentation from Toyota showing that it was considered internally only a mid-model update and not a full-model change. Unfortunately those are confidential documents that I cannot publish here. Non-confidential information regarding the models and updates exists in the service documents offered by Toyota on TIS, however viewing them requires a paid subscription.
I sometimes struggle with finding sources for information and facts that I know with certainty but that are publicly available. In fact we have butted heads on several occasions regarding information I have added or corrected.
The sources I posted yesterday were links to the owners manual for each of the model years with the pages showing the available models for that year. Unfortunately when Toyota posts their owners manual documents they leave off the cover which actually shows the model year.
If you go to Toyota.com and navigate to the owners manuals there, you can see that they are applicable to the specific model years mentioned, for example, here is a link to the 2017 Owner's Manual where the available models can be found on pages 174-175 and 569-570:

There are other ways to confirm that there was no break in frame numbering for TRN245 and TRN265 trucks between 2015 MY (production ending in 2015/08) and 2016 MY (production starting in 2015/08), but they are difficult to cite.

Redesign
I have gotten verbal and documented confirmation via my Toyota contact, that the Tacoma will be the redesigned for the 2024 model year. It is not 2025, 2026, or 2027 like a lot of ignorant owners lackadaisically insinuate. It's an 8 year run. Carmaker1 (talk) 15:42, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
Second gen TRD packages
It says "The Tacoma is offered in two TRD packages: Sport and Off-Road." Then has a paragraph to describe the Sport package and another package to describe the off-road and tech packages. The tech package is apparently not part of the off-road package, in spite of the off-road and tech packages being intermingled in the same paragraph. Do we have 2 or 3 packages? Back to the Future Tacoma Concept and other SEMA mods
The Back to the Future Tacoma "Concept" was really a series of modifications made for the 2015 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show booth. That's not the normal definition of a concept car.
Furthermore, Toyota has done several of these one-off Tacoma modifications for SEMA for many years including a 2011 Oakley Surf Tacoma, a 2020 Tacoma Truck Bed trailer, and a 2021 Tacoma camper conversion. They're all really cool, but do we want to cover all of them? If not, it seems strange to me to single out the Back to the Future Tacoma Concept for coverage. - I do believe the Back to the Future vehicle belongs here. Many of car articles have various special cars by the manufacturer (but not by tuners, etc) in the same article. When I was first creating the Toyota concept vehicles (2000–2009) pages, there was some kick-back for whether models closely aligned to production models should go on the concept page or the production model page. My preference was for them to go on the concept page but others in the conversation preferred putting them on the production model page. Oh well, can't please everybody.
- "Concept car" is a vague term.. It can mean anything from some mild trim/paint job to a full blown, nothing-like-anything-else Jetson mobile. This is one of the milder ones but it still counts.
- Thank you for detecting that the image was of a movie replica and not the 2015 version. I totally missed that but it's obvious with 20/20 hindsight when you look at the headlights.
- Thank you for pointing out those other Tacoma based concepts. Yes, I would put them in the article as well. If there gets to be a lot of Tacoma concepts, then we can revisit how we present them. Stepho talk 11:13, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
