Speedy deletion of an Allison image?
editHow/when did this happen? And why? I thought we were quite careful considering the source of images of tropical cyclones. Almost all within the project are from the U. S. government, and free to use. Thegreatdr 20:18, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- The image, I believe, was a fair use image from a Dallas office, or something; it had been there since early in the article's history, before we became really careful with images. Hurricanehink (talk) 21:17, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Statistics Check?
editUnder "Impact-Texas" we have the following (emphasis mine):
Houston experienced torrential rainfall in a short amount of time. 6.3 inches (160 mm) fell in just one hour, while 28.5 inches (724 mm) fell in only 12 hours. The six-day rainfall in Houston amounted to 38.6 inches (980 mm).[14] Two-thirds of the bayous and creeks in Harris County experienced 500-year flood events. Houston, which typically receives 46.07 inches (1170 mm) of rain in a year, experienced 35.7% of its expected total in the first nine days of June.[1]
If the yearly average is 46.07", and the 6 day rainfall is 38.6", shouldn't the % of expected total rainfall received be much higher than 35.7%? But one would need to verify figures against sources and the days included in rainfall totals vs. "first nine days" before editing and don't have time, just noticed seems off.
- I finally fixed this problem. The 38.6" was not at IAH (Houston Intercontinental), while the other percentage stat is relevant at IAH. I'm shocked this apparent and obvious-looking error survived FAC. More precision was needed when indicating various rainfall values around Houston, because the two lines indicating data were relevant for two different sites...it was easy to read in that both values were for the same location. Perhaps the whole article should be rechecked if this problem survived. Thegreatdr (talk) 21:03, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Block
editI think we should semi-protect this article. in the past couple days,we have seen a lot of vandalism to this page. How do you block? Juliancolton (talk) 18:30, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- Protecting can only be done by an admin. My understanding is that articles featured on the main page are rarely protected. However, the article will only be on the main page for about 5 1/2 more hours. The vandalism should stop after it is de-featured. --Evb-wiki (talk) 18:45, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- Indeed, it is not supposed to be protected. What would you think of Wikipedia, knowing that one can edit any article, when you can't edit the article on the main page? --Hurricanehink (talk) 20:13, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- Wow, I never knew how much a page is vandalized when it gets to the main page. I have reverted at least 3, and there have been at least a dozen more casses. Juliancolton (talk) 21:48, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
"30,000 became homeless after the flooding destroyed 2,744 homes"
editSo the average flooded home had more than 10 residents? That seems unlikely in urban America. Plasticup T/C 16:34, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Apartments? This was, after all, in downtown Houston. 208.120.45.87 (talk) 03:53, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yeh that needs to be made clearer. Maybe: "30,000 became homeless after the flooding Allison caused destroyed around 2,744 homes. However the amount of homes may be higher due to Apartments etc etc." User:Itfc+canes=me Talk Sign me! Its good to be back! 16:16, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

New Storm Archive
editI recently found the storm's archives, which enables the removal of a considerable number of dead links. I have already relinked reference 11 to the archive and removed the dead link tag. Now I don't have the time to do it all myself, and I'm not sure if it is necessary or not, but figured that getting rid of link rot is always a good idea. If anyone could help, please do. This older FA does not seem to be a thorough and representative survey of the relevant literature as required by WP:FACR #1c. In its current state, this is built almost entirely on government reports. However, there is a decent amount of scholarly literature about this topic, such as this from the Journal of Hydrological Engineering, this from Quaternary Research, this from National Hazards Review, this from the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health, this from the Institute of Transportation Engineers, this from the Journal of Hydrological Engineers, and much more. Given that I found these all in about 10 minutes is a pretty clear sign this is lacking a lot of scholarly coverage, and does not meet the FA criteria. Hog Farm Talk 04:54, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
@Hog Farm: I would argue that after spot checking a few of those scholarly articles you linked to, it seems that most of those articles are only tangibly connected to Alison. Jason Rees (talk) 05:57, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jason Rees: - I think there's also an expectation to use the scholarly literature, if it is present. While this isn't focused on all aspects of Allison, it's a decent peer-reviewed piece covering the aftermath on the storm on infrastructure. This book devotes an entire chapter to flash flooding resulting from the storm (I can access most of the chapter through Gbooks preview, so hopefully it is previewable for others, too. While this isn't exclusively about Allison, it does contain some good content about forecasting Allison. I can only get the abstract of this, but the abstract suggests that it likely has some content about storm damage from Allison. That isn't a whole lot of sources, but that's from only a fairly brief search, so I think it's safe to say that there is academic coverage about TS Allison, and that said academic coverage is not incorporated well into the article in its current state. Proposal to merge Effects of Tropical Storm Allison in Texas
editThe following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The main Allison article isn't very long, just under 4,000 words. Since Texas constituted the majority of the impact, then it would be useful to add the information from Effects of Tropical Storm Allison in Texas to the main article. I propose merging the sub-article with the main Allison article. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:22, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support - I didn't realize that Allison has a sub-article for the Texan impacts until now. The sub-article is quite short compared to others just like it, and can easily be merged into the main article with no problem. ~ Sandy14156 (Talk ✉️) 02:30, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
