Early Years
editI have removed the following sentence, written about the Turkish team in 1923: "In this era the Turkish national team was feared because the players that represented the squad played in Turkish teams that defeated English teams a few years before in every encounter they had" a) because it does not make sense and b) because there is no record of English teams playing Turkish teams in this period, either at club or international level.Stillmans39 (talk) 22:51, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
The Turkish teams played English teams during the Turkish war of independence 84.104.219.2 (talk) 19:48, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
Not the war of independence but during the occupation of Constantinople, the British set up a football match and the Turks managed to beat them, they received a trophy afterwards, the General Harrington Cup, but it doesn't matter since that whole sentence is not suitable for Wikipedia standards. 77.166.30.3 (talk) 14:59, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Weasel words
editThe third place match between South-Korea and Turkey was the most thrilling match of the tournament according to many it is also said it was better than the final. Any reference? Who are these "many"?
It is also said Turkey played better than Brazil in both groupstage and semi-final run. Who said this? any reference? If they were in the final they could have been World Champions. Speculation. Furhtemore, Turkey lost both matches, so, even if one of them was the final, they would have not been champions.
Maybe thats the reason the Turks got nicknamed 'European Brazilians' their technical and spirital system was a eye to catch. Who called Turks "European Brazilians"? What is a "spirital system"? Well you know what? Brazil is South American Turkey!!! No lie there!!!
- Even "spiritual system" correctly spelled is just a fancy phrase without meaning...
- Well, though I object to POV arguments in articles, I certainly hope some of you are as eager to carry out such edits on rampant POV statments on the pages, throughout Wikipedia, of teams that have accomplished little to nothing in international football. Also, again, although it's POV, because of Turkey beating Germany in the last several competitive matches where they have faced off (Euro 2000 Qualifying win and away draw where they dominated the match, friendly 2-1 win in 2005 against a team with Schweinsteiger, Podolski, Schneider, etc., and other matches), they believed that had they passed Brazil, they could have acheived the much easier task of defeating Germany. Also, it's pretty obvious and can be clearly seen from tournament scores that Turkiye came closer than any other team at the World Cup 2002 to achieving a draw with Brazil in the World Cup 2002. Germany lost 2-0 to Brazil in a match that Brazil largely controlled, while Turkiye nearly achieved a draw against Brazil in their first match, that included refereeing that gave Brazil a controversial penalty criticed by football pundits including football legend Franz Beckenbauer, and in their second match against Brazil, Turkiye had the majority of ball possession according to post-match facts, despite losing by a close 1-0. The "European Brazilians" reference was, I believe, from some European soccer pundit: don't know the name as I never thought it was important enough to research, although I agree it is not relevant to an article that shouldn't derive too much from opinions of individual pieces. Forgive Turkish football supporters from being overawed by Brazil after the 2003 Confederations Cup match against Brazil where practically a team of Turkish kids with Tuncay, Gokdeniz, and Ibo Toraman drew 2-2 with a Brazil team that included Ronaldinho, Adriano, Lúcio, Emerson, Juan, Dida, etc. and knocked that Brazil team out of the tournament as Turkiye had finished 2nd in the group stage and Brazil were eliminated in finishing third in the group stage. And please do not attempt to offer a childish argument such as suggesting that Brazil did not care for that match because it certainly appeared that Ronaldinho cared when he was sent off after getting into a fight with Rustu in the dying minutes while frantically attempting to retrieve the ball after their late equalizer in the match to restart play before time was up. I can link you to a video of the incident if you want. --Rigobert Song, 1:42, 17 July 2006
Definitely to remove.--Panairjdde 09:50, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
- Agree. Practically any team (that doesn't play as boring as the Italians ;-)) is called Brazilian at some point. Can't we just say thay Turkey surprised everyone by getting so far? Although truth be told more attention went to South Korea. The implication is troughout this piece that Turkey 'should have won' (such a strange notion) in 2002. Get it out.Renke 11:01, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
- "more attention went to South Korea" No offense but another POV. There is a nice BBC sport editorial I read during the tournament that conceded that it was "the Turk's tournament" after Turkey defeated South Korea in the third place match 3-2 while also scoring the fastest goal in World Cup history and with influential midfielder Hasan Sas suspended. Do more research next time. Racism --Rigobert Song, 1:42, 17 July 2006
- I agree on the point of the surprise, more because it was the second qualification of T. to WC. (As regards Italian style of play, it is boring because you already know who will win ^_^;)--Panairjdde 11:11, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
- I agree it should be removed. It's annoying that the anonymous editor seems unwilling to take the discussion at the talk page, and continues pushing his own agenda. 惑乱 分からん 23:36, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
- I am proud of my national football team but I accept that the statements you gave are really stupid (European Brazilians... Oh God, even Ivory Coast has a player that plays for Chelsea but we only have Nihat Kahveci and he can only plays for Villareal so we have to be logical). Why we couldn't pass Brazil in both games in the 2002 World Cup? Because they were better and also Turkey couldn't qualify for both Euro 2004 and 2006 World Cup. We have to be objective about the performance of our national team. Basically, we need to study more. With respect, Deliogul 20:30, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
- My friend, I have to ask you if you are really Turkish because you seem to have a lack of knowledge of many things involving Turkish football. "Even Ivory Coast has a player that plays for Chelsea..." What kind of statement is that? As for Nihat being on Villareal, Villareal reached the semifinal of the 2005-2006 Champions League (while Chelsea were knocked out of the competition two rounds earlier :) )and Villareal has players like Riquelme and Sorin. Also, Nihat has an excellent scoring record in Spain despite spending his time there mostly with Real Sociedad, not one of the traditional giants of Spanish football. Eider Gudjohnsen, until recently, was on the Chelsea squad but has he particularly excelled at the international level for Iceland? No. It is very foolish to assume that a national team will achieve success because they have a player on a club team that spends billions of pounds every year. Also, Chelsea was interested in Nihat after his first season there where he finished tied with Ronaldo for second highest scorer in La Liga, but Real Sociedad refused to settle for lower than what Chelsea thought was too high a price because they wanted to hold on to Nihat as they were playing in the Champions League the following year. In short, I certainly hope you were not insinuating that the Ivory Coast, a team that went out in the first group stage in their first appearance in a World Cup to be a stronger side than Turkey that has to go through the much more difficult European Qualifying Zone. Regarding Brazil, if you actually were a Turkish football supporter you would have remembered the controversial penalty (and in general poor refereeing) that went against Turkiye in their group stage match against Brazil, not to mention Rivaldo's gamesmanship, all of which was condemned by football pundits worldwide including football legend Franz Beckenbauer who said he was was disgusted with the referee's performance. Indeed it is no surprise that the obviously amateur, and sadly starstruck, Korean referee was removed from later matches he was supposed to referee because of his poor, biased performance in the Brazil-Turkiye group stage match, although this did little to help Turkiye who could have taken away a draw against Brazil, in a match where most European football pundits agreed the refereeing was amateur and biased against them. Also, I suggest watching the 2003 Confederations Cup match against Brazil where practically a team of Turkish kids with Tuncay, Gokdeniz, and Ibo Toraman drew 2-2 with a Brazil team that included Ronaldinho, Adriano, Lúcio, Emerson, Juan, Dida, etc. and knocked that Brazil team out of the tournament as Turkiye had finished 2nd in the group stage and Brazil were eliminated in finishing third in the group stage. And please do not attempt to offer a childish argument such as suggesting that Brazil did not care for that match because it certainly appears that Ronaldinho did when he was sent off after getting into a fight with Rustu while frantically attempting to retrieve the ball after their late equalizer in the match to restart play before time was up. I can link you to a video of the incident if you want. Regarding not qualifying for the Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006, we finished second in qualifying groups in both cases and unfortunately went out in a two-legged playoff in both cases, in both cases against teams we were favored to win agianst. Disappointing yes, but certainly more impressive than teams that do not even make it to a playoff and go out in the qualifying group stage, while still having supporter's who boast about their teams for some reason. Also, this would not be a problem in Euro 2008 Qualifying, as even 2nd place in the qualifying group guarantees a place in the tournament, so Turkiye won't be undone by an unfortunate playoff this time. This explains why until recently, when FIFA changed the format of calculating the standings, Turkey's world ranking had not suffered too much despite not qualifying for the Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006. Simply, the teams lower than Turkiye in the ranking that actually did make it to the Euro 2004, for example, did miserable and in doing miserable at the tournament did not get any points from it and so remained below Turkiye. The teams that were already above Turkiye were the teams that actually did well for the most part and so, again, the state of the rankings were not overly affected as far as Turkiye was concerned, which is why up to May 2006 Turkiye is at least 15 in the World rankings. However, since then FIFA has introduced a new system to their ranking which I don't seem to understand as it apparently has rewarded Denmark (who finished below Turkiye in World Cup qualifying) and Guinea for not qualifying for the World Cup. However, things look good since, as I have already mentioned, Turkiye only needs to finish in the top two of their Euro 2008 Qualifying Group so their is no chance of them being undone by an unfortunate playoff this time. In reply to your suggestion of needing to "study more", it seems my friend that if you are, IN FACT, a supporter of the national team, you should take some of your own advice. --Rigobert Song, 1:42, 17 July 2006

Greece vs. Turkey Rivalry
editCan someone please explain the point of this...by beating greece in a few friendlies way back when that doesnt mean anything. If you wanna inform people of the two teams put a link to Greece's Euro cup victory and how turkey lost to lowly latvia HA...
- Check this link out: World Cup Qualifying Group 2 How about how Turkey finished 2nd in our World Cup qualifying group and Greece finished 4th? LOL, PWNED!!! Also, Greece will be the first "european champion" that won't qualify for the following tournament. Why should anybody listen to you? You obviously know nothing about football. Flags
editI dont get it why there must be flag icons on the coaches area
The Turkish flag doesn't just represent the past or history, it is a crimson banner that dispalys the future our people and a mighty justice could not be so rightly give to that standard.Rokkafellah 03:01, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Rüştü Reçber: 112 or 113?

editEligibility
editDoes anyone know if Turkish Cypriots are eligible for the Turkish team? Is this worth putting in the article? beano 16:45, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
- Under FIFA regulations, a player must have the citizenship of the Republic of Turkey in order to qualify for the national football team of Turkey. I'm not sure if Turkish Cypriots have Turkish citizenship. As far as I know only one Turkish Cypriot footballers has represented Turkey: Colin Kazim-Richards. AecisBrievenbus 12:56, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
- That is correct, players much have Turkish citizenship, and whilst Turkish Cypriots can easily apply for citizenship, they don't have it by default. The example of Colin Kazim-Richards put forward is a good example, he had to apply for his Turkish citizenship to play for the national team and sign for Fenerbahçe without infringing the foreign limit - hence the official name Kazim Kazim, as used on all official documentation (i.e., UEFA). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.107.42.12 (talk) 14:19, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Home stadium AND about those two matches with greece
editAtatürk Olympic Stadium isn't home stadium of national team. they just played there once and probably will never play again. traditionally BJK İnönü is home to national team
and those two matches greeks claim to win (in 1950s) werent full nationals. Turkey picked an "all-star" selection which included ONLY players from istanbul teams —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.102.177.45 (talk) 12:49, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Reverts
editThe Hungarian team in the 50's was just the best there was at the time, they played a lot of friendlies with teams around the world, just check their page and you will see Golden Team. Turkey managed to defeat this team, it was considered as a shock to the world, I have several Turkish newspapers from that time here with me, for the Turkish national teams it was a big success and thats why I mentioned it.
Second Turkey can now be considered as a force in world football thats should be reckoned with, its just a fact, their results in the tournaments prove this, no one will underestimate them. I leave out "strong" maybe that was just a little over the edge.
I agree with you that the teams first success was not the 1950 World Cup, beating Syria is not a success. Redman19 (talk) 21:24, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Kevin I agree with you so I have put the Hungary victory in the History section. Redman19 (talk) 21:38, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
- Newspapers might use phrases like "shocking the world" and "Magical Magyars": an encyclopaedia however uses formal tone to delived facts, not hype: I'll revert to my phrasing, that retains the essential facts. I have however reverted again the claim in the lead paragraph: this is not encyclopaedic language, not a verifiable claim. An encyclopaedia needs to be made up of factual statements, not vague impressions in ill defined terms. The facts that give rise to such impressions (Turkey have been in the top 40 of the FIFA world rankings for all but four months since June 1999, could be included if suitably phrased. Kevin McE (talk) 06:48, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
How about this then: Turkey is nowadays considered as a force to be reckoned with. Turkey always plays good in the Qualifiers, reaching the play-offs on many occasions, they are now topping the group with Germany at the Euro 2012 Qualifiers. Redman19 (talk) 07:52, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
Im adding some more info: in the past Turkey was a football minnow, drawing with teams like San Marino or Malta, in the recent years, especially after 2000, they had some major success that steered them up in the World Rankings all the way to into the top 10. 188.202.146.57 (talk) 08:05, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
- That is really no improvement: you really need to read documentation like WP:Tone and WP:V. You cannot just make unsupported value judgements. I suggested an encyclopaedic phrase, consisting of verifiable facts, above: why have you simply persisted with informal unsubstantiated and poorly defined phrasing? "Minnow" is not specific information, "always good" is poor grammar and ill-defined, "many" is imprecise. They were in the top ten for about 2 years, and have not been for 6 years: don't stretch the claim in ways that can be undermined. A list of "Memorable matches" is by definition subjective: memorable to whom? If the only inclusion criteria is Turkish pride, then the critewria is POV, and it undermines the NPOV principle. ignore what sig says: this bit was posted at 09:53 :@) Kevin McE (talk) 10:12, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
For example check the Greece national team page, they have a memorable matches section too. 188.202.146.57 (talk) 08:54, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
I sugggest you name it notable matches then. Redman19 (talk) 09:01, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
- Bad practice elsewhere justifies nothing; relabelling a section does not make its inclusion criteria any less biased. How on earth can the third place play-off game in a tournament be notable, but the semifinal deemed insignificant? On what grounds are matches against Italy, Sweden and Portugal less important than one against Belgium in Euro 2000? This list does not bear up to any scrutiny at all.Kevin McE (talk) 09:53, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
- While the attempt at more factual phrasing in the lead is appreciated, there is no enhanced status in being in the top ten. And if there were, then it would be perfectly valid for an editor to append "but that status was lost two years later, and has not been regained since": would you be happy with that? Kevin McE (talk) 10:00, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
Kevin the notable matches section is just for Turkey itself, the third place match is notable for Turkey because its the highest achievement: winning the bronze medal at a WC, by the way many other articels have it too, just take a look at the Greece national football team, I dont know really what the problem is. 188.202.146.57 (talk) 12:10, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
- It should not be on the Greece page either then. Such sections have never had support at WP:FOOTY. If it is notable only for Turkey, that is subjective, and that is not encyclopaedic. Kevin McE (talk) 19:14, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
Both Greece and Turkey have a different status now, both are not considered as weak teams anymore, thats what the line on both articles means, I think its pretty logic. 195.240.250.105 (talk) 15:39, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Just let it go, I also reverted it at the Greece national football team article. Redman19 (talk) 17:34, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
The Greece page has the same text but he isnt deleting that its just strange. 195.240.250.105 (talk) 19:13, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Just check it now, I think its good enough. Redman19 (talk) 19:37, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
- "After the 2002 World Cup Turkey established his self as a force to be reckoned with, therefore Turkey was considered as a weak force in European football. " Do you believe that this sentence actually makes any sense at all? Where is the verification of this? How is it subjective and factual (or even comprehensible)?
- "Both Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe gave the national team the most players while Beşiktaş represented the national team in a match against Greece. " When? Was the team for the Greece match composed entirely of players from one team? Kevin McE (talk) 21:09, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Yes, thats the reason Besiktas holds the Turkish flag in their amblem, this was in 1952, you can read this in their history. Redman19 (talk) 21:48, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
- In that case be specific: "For a match (friendly? qualifier?) against Greece in 1952, one club, Beşiktaş, provided all eleven players" (were there subs?), and link to a text that verifies the claim. Such an event would be better placed in the history section than in the lead paragraph. Have you got reliable data that proves that >50% of the squad for a given timeframe came from Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe? Kevin McE (talk) 22:16, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
- According to FIFA.com, no international matches were played between Turkey and Greece in the 1950s at all. Kevin McE (talk) 10:28, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Second, in the past Turkey was just a weak force in football that line is showing that Turkey has improved after the 2002 World Cup, other teams take the Turks more seriously now, they are not at the bottom at any pots anymore when groups are being made for the Qualifiers, thats what that line wants to tell the people. Redman19 (talk) 21:48, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
- "A weak force" is not formal English: it's a phrasing most unlikely to be used by any native English speaker. If you can find a history of the seedings they have had for qualifying competitions, that would indeed be a good way of proving progress, but those facts need to be related, not a vague impression. Kevin McE (talk) 22:16, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
- Temporarily joining the "elite", a journalistic phrase that has no established meaning, is not the same as currently being established. Anyone who writes "Turkey established his self" is fundamentally unqualified to write an English language document. Kevin McE (talk) 10:28, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

- Look, Redman, the problem here doesn't have to do with the fact that it's not the most coherent language, it's the fact that the text just isn't acceptable for an encyclopedia. There must be absolutely no bias whatsoever. Saying something along the lines of "force to be reckoned with" is, as Kevin has said, too journalistic and timely. Encyclopedia's have to be neutral and should not be timely; timeliness is for articles such as current seasons and whatnot. Instead, focus on the facts that could be backed up by a source(s). Whether or not another article has the same problem doesn't matter; it's the age old adage of "if they jumped off a bridge would you jump off too?". Disregard that and focus on what the matter is in front of us, and that is the Turkey NT article, not Greece or anyone else. I haven't read the entire discussion, but if there is something you would like to add, add it. This is Wikipedia after all. However, if someone challenges your contribution, don't fret, let's discuss it (as we are now) and come to a compromise that is acceptable by several members instead of you or me or someone else. That's the whole point of WP :) Invisibletr (talk) 21:05, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
Kit history
editThe kit which is shown for the years 1923 - 1977 is not right. Look at the Turkish, Italian or German page for the right kit. And have a look at this picture:

Fair use rationale for File:TurkishFootballFederation-logo.png
editFile:TurkishFootballFederation-logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a non-free use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Updated spelling of Turkey/Türkiye
editSince June 2022, officials in Ankara requested that the UN use "Türkiye" instead of "Turkey" for this country's name.[1] Since then, FIFA[2][3] and UEFA[4] now use the "Türkiye" spelling for the country's name. The English-language article for the country itself is still titled Turkey, and I'm sure there are good reasons for not changing that, but given that the governing bodies now use this particular spelling for the national football teams, I think it would be appropriate for this article and others referring to Turkish national football teams (e.g. UEFA Euro 2024, where this issue was briefly mentioned on the talk page) to use the name/spelling prescribed by the governing bodies. - I strongly oppose this. This is the English language wikipedia and whe should use the common English language names. Tvx1 20:52, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. The Associated Press continues to use "Turkey", and they do so "based on the guidance of our staff in the region". —C.Fred (talk) 00:48, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- Support. Checking European English-language sports media, you find both: while BBC Sport, The Guardian Sport, and Eurosport use "Turkey" in articles and the first two also in results tables, the UEFA website & press releases use Türkiye, and the UEFA-provided TV broadcasts (the most-viewed of all the media by far) display "Türkiye". The other national football team name change this tournament, Czech Republic to Czechia, was adopted much more widely, and for consistency, I'd go with the changed name here, too. Rivalry with Armenia?
editA football rivalry between Armenia and Turkey does not exist. To call a tie a rivalry it has to happen quite often, preferably on a level of significant importance; such as at the World Cup or the EUROs. At least, the teams should play against each other in important qualifying games for these tournaments. Furthermore, there should be some form of balance and parity between the countries regarding the results.
Armenia and Turkey played a measly 4 matches against each other. They have met just four times. Not one of these matches was in a significant tournament, because Armenia did not manage to yet qualify for any major tournaments. Furthermore, this "rivalry" seems to be quite one-sided. Armenia did not manage to defeat Turkey, so far.
Italy vs. Spain, France vs. Germany, Argentina vs. Uruguay - Now these are proper, classic football rivalries. Playing against each other often, similar levels of success, geographical proximity, historicity of the tie etc. do make a tie a rivalry.
Armenians' hatred of the Turks is not enough to make this tie a football rivalry. That section should be removed from the article. 85.97.228.157 (talk) 18:44, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
