Merger Proposals

Charger Bulletin

The article on the Charger Bulletin doesn't seem full enough to standalone, but perhaps others disagree. I'm just not sure either way - I'm leaning towards thinking it should be put into this article on UNH, but not 100% sure. Thoughts?

Per no discussion, and research into standards of other universities:

Campus Police

It has been proposed, since October 2008, that the article on University of New Haven Police be merged into this article on "University of New Haven" (see this version of October 2008).

My view: There are no sources whatsoever in the article. IMHO there is no encyclopedic content; it is inappropriate to give an equipment list of the police equipment at all. It would be ludicrous to have encyclopedia articles detailing the equipment in the police dept, the fire dept, the cafeteria, the heating plant, etc. One or two sentences could possibly be added to the suggested merge-target article (but even that is probably giving undue importance to the police dept, frankly). And the stub currently at University of New Haven Police should be changed to a redirect to the university article. The article topic does not seem notable to me. My view could change if someone actually wanted to develop a proper article, with reliable sources, about the University of New Haven police, and assert some encyclopedic importance, and defend it from AFD. But that seems unlikely. Best to redirect, and focus future editor effort on something more important elsewhere, IMO. --doncram (talk) 16:57, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

The University of New Haven Police article now has a couple of references, and the unit does have jurisdiction within West Haven and not only on campus. Therefore it is notable as a seperate law enforcement group within the town. Markvs88 (talk) 16:01, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
At a merger proposal at nother talk page, Markvs88 asks me to revisit this. At the other merger proposal, i stated "...I don't see merit in prejudging that other editors cannot/will not develop more detail.... In general as i have stated I will usually support following anyone who actually takes on the initiative to develop material...." and M commented that "if your point that "one cannot tell the future will hold" is valid, you'll need to change" my viewpoint here on this merger proposal.
Okay, my comment here is that this seems different. The current article now has a couple external links, but consists largely of an equipment list and contact information, which both of which are non-encyclopedic and should be deleted. Are there any good example articles of type that this article there could grow into? I am not aware of any articles about campus police departments. In general about university articles that i have watched or developed, I've learned that separate articles about separate departments of the university are usually frowned upon. I can't currently imagine that the campus police department is more important than every academic department. Please do show models for what you think this article could become. --doncram (talk) 17:30, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
It's *also* an independent law enforcement agency with jurisdiction in a Connecticut city, which makes it notable. Beyond that, even without the contact information it is at least as developed an article as Hazardville Historic District. So logically either they're both merged, or neither is merged. (Note: equipment lists are encyclopedic... for examples see Chicago Fire Department or heck, Los Angeles Police Department had so much they broke it out into Los Angeles Police Department resources. Markvs88 (talk) 17:46, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
I notice the Los Angeles Police Department article has a WikiProject Law Enforcement tag on its Talk page, and is part of a category system, which goes up to Category:Law enforcement agencies of the United States by state. I still don't think mention of a golf cart owned by the campus police department is appropriate!, but leave it in for now. I just outright deleted the contact information section though, on Wikipedia is not a directory grounds (wp:NOTDIR?). I also don't think the wikipedia is served by having an article on every campus police department. There are thousands of universities, almost all with a police department that is given similar authority to go outside the university a bit. Honestly, i think it would be appropriate to raise the existence of this article to wider attention by opening an AFD on it, and giving notice to WikiProject Law Enforcement and WikiProject Connecticut. And perhaps at suitable noticeboards or talk pages relating to wp:N notability (though the AFD process brings in regular editors informed about notability). In other cases I have seen editors opening an AFD where they thought the article should continue to exist, just to get confirmation, which I consider an abuse of the AFD process. Here, I don't particularly care about the article, which I only visited originally because I was trying, in my way, to support your effort at the WikiProject Connecticut mainpage to address the open merger proposals in CT. I had no idea your position would be to want to keep this article separate. But, now, I could fairly argue that I think the article should not exist separately, so I could make a legitimate AFD case. I would definitely be willing to do so if that would be viewed as helpful to settle this question here. --doncram (talk) 18:15, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
OTOH, LAPD lists bicycles & horses... wither a golf cart? It's gear, and gear is obviouisly notable. That said, I'm fine with the contact info going. Note that University of New Haven Police is in Category:Law enforcement agencies of Connecticut, a sub of Category:Law enforcement agencies of the United States by state. As for jurisdiction, this agency is a peer of the city police. If you really want to do that it's your right of course, but I did a quick search and discovered Harvard University Police Department and dozens of other university police articles. Also, be aware that you're arguing for the merge of Hazardville Historic District as it would also lack notability by this vein of logic. After all, there are thousands of historic districts, almost all with a town they belong to. :-) It's your choice as to how we procede. PS, thanks for the note about the law enforcement tag, I've added it. Markvs88 (talk) 18:31, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

WNHU Mention

WNHU is top class and truly a symbol of the University. Well done to the person who had the presence of mind to include it.

RfC: Student Government President's Name

User by the IP of 76.204.150.9 and 76.202.80.162 keeps adding name of current student government president. As this is a changing position and - primarily - because the president has no involvement in any mentioned significant event, I don't believe this information should be included in an article about the University as a whole. Agreement by fellow Wikipedia members include Huon:

If that specific president is discussed by reliable sources - say, because they were involved in some significant event - then Wikipedia should definitely mention the name. On the other hand I don't think a list of student government presidents is a good idea, nor a plain "The current student government president is John Doe." So it depends on context.

As this user is not logged in, I am unable to communicate with them. Would love an admin official opinion so edit warring doesn't continue. Thank you! Zack Rosen (talk) 11:48, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia doesn't have information on just anybody, unless they're somehow notable. Even though I'm quite important to myself and my family, and am well-known among my colleagues and past students, I really don't expect to find a Wikipedia article about me, because I'm not a notable individual. Certainly, I'm not notable ex officio, even though I was the President of the AFMSA - Australian Federation of Muslim Student Associations - in 1971! So why would the President of the Student Government of the University of ... where was it, New Ravin'? ... be notable ex officio?
And (sorry, Zack Rosen!) I'm not a Wikipedia admin, and therefore perhaps doubly not notable, but I'm happy to add my (non-notable) support to the position you've taken. FWIW!
If you can't talk to that user, perhaps we need a temporary edit lock on the article? yoyo (talk) 06:59, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
Seems solved for now. Thanks! Zack Rosen (talk) 13:06, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Eva Sapi: ILADS

The following was recently removed from this article by Sailsbystars:

  • Dr. Eva Sapi (Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Science) - Scientist and leader in Lyme Disease Research and microbiology.[2]

ILADS, the source of this information, is an international nonprofit organization which seeks to treat Lyme and other associated diseases. What makes this a fringe organization? Also, it is simply a source to confirm Dr. Sapi's research and affiliation with the University. -Zack Rosen (talk) 12:21, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

ILADS in an international nonprofit dedicated to the study of "chronic Lyme disease," not Lyme disease in general. This disease doesn't exist. See Lyme_disease#Chronic_Lyme_disease_and_post-Lyme_syndrome, which gives much better information on ILADS than our ILADS article itself. Hence why it's a fringe organization. Sailsbystars (talk) 15:17, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Also, it's under "Notable professors" - fringe research only recognized by fringe organizations does not confer notability. It looks like Dr. Sapi engaged in serious research regarding cancer and other subjects until recently.... but I don't see that research as being noted elsewhere.
