Varshney's are the baniya or What...??
editCan anybody help me to understand wether Varshney's are the baniya and comes under which catagery (general, ST/Sc, BC or any other) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.241.111.12 (talk) 08:50, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Varshneys are Brahmins and come under General Category, also see Sri Akrurji link. For more explanation see www.Varshneya.Wordpress.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.234.174.143 (talk) 15:01, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
Current days Varshney belong to Vaishy community. But actually its a lineage from Vrishni who himself came from Yayati and then Yadu of Lunar (Chandra) lineage. In past Varshneys encompassed all the 'Varnas' .Castes in strict sense were not in existence. Vishnu Shekhar Gupta (talk) 04:04, 28 January 2016 (UTC) Varshney's are 'Baniya' and belong to General category
Cleanup
editI've cleaned up this page a little, and removed some material which read like original research, or possibly someone's point-of-view. I've combed Google and all the journals/databases etc. I have access to, but have been unable to find any reliable, verifiable info, except that there are a lot of people named Varshney. Expert knowledge would be appreciated in case I've got something wrong! --kateshortforbob 11:43, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- I've done a fresh cleanup. There was a lot of material which was only partly in English and which did not seem to relate to the subject Varshney.
- The article still needs WP:reliable sources. - Fayenatic (talk) 20:50, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
- An anon user kept reinstating the above material after I deleted it. I therefore just cut out the non-English material, and tagged it as unclear. More internal links might help to make sense of this text. Sources are also essential; unless they can be provided within a reasonable time, the history section should be removed again altogether. - Fayenatic (talk) 16:48, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
- Despite the addition of internal links, the whole History section is still baffling to a non-Indian reader. It has been tagged as confusing since October and has not improved, so I propose to delete it again.
- As for the material on Shree Akrurji Maharaj, this should probably be split to create a separate article. - Fayenatic (talk) 22:13, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
There is no need to baffle, brains and english are needed to understand. So stop editing this page. You will not gain anything, else it would be reported. Your conduct towards other Wikis is also not good. You are changing/editing with nonsense to this page and other pages.STOP —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.234.174.143 (talk • contribs) 14:19, 1 February 2010
- Thank you, I certainly aim to edit nonsense in all articles where I find it, changing it into information which is based on reliable sources in accordance with Wikipedia's policies, and expressed in quite well-written English.
- If you have any specific allegations against me, go ahead and raise them on my talk page or a relevant project page such as WP:AIV. Meanwhile, please use this page for discussion on how to improve the article about the Indian name Varshney. - Fayenatic (talk) 00:40, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
A discussion starts with communication and questions with topics which are not understood, and not changing/editing with nonsense and errors with this or any other wiki. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.234.174.143 (talk) 01:39, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
- Right-ho. Now, this is an article about a name. The material about Shree Akrurji Maharaj does not belong here, although a separate article about him would be fine provided there are sources for it. It is OK to mention his connection to the history of Varshneys, and to give context to that by explaining in a line or two who he was; but beyond that, this article does not need to contain more about him. So, what objection can you have to splitting this article? - Fayenatic (talk) 09:55, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
Reading of this article explains that-indiscriminately changing many articles a day does not do that. Topic and questions should be put forward first, instead baffling and changing them with errors. It is indecent to change/edit with errors and what one thinks is right, especially if one does not understand the topic. This Wiki or any other wiki should not have been changed/edited if one does understand. Makes sense to this logic?. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.234.142.20 (talk) 11:53, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
- Unfortunately most people will not understand anything from this article, as it is poorly written and full of foreign words. Please use this page to reply to the arguments.
- As for your accusations: I have not introduced any errors. Either be specific, or stop repeating this vague blustering. - Fayenatic (talk) 14:22, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
I do not understand, so nobody would understand?.This would be the right approach to a question, instead of incorporating changes on this wiki and other pages. For your bafflement, your change on 1st Oct,2009 of- "Varshneys are descended from Shri Akrur Ji Maharaja." changed from "Varshneys are progenies of Shri Akrur Ji Maharaj" - has totally different meaning. Ethics and descency is required. When you made a change on 18th Jan,2010- "Mathura" to "Mathuras" spoiled the meaning of the sentence. There are many instances. So ask first from others, and then make changes. Now that is indecent. No knowledge of the topic is not good for making any changes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.234.142.20 (talk) 14:32, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
- At last, you are discussing -- good! I understand progeny to mean a descendant or, usually, descendants collectively. What do you intend by that word?
- The other sentence was "The cultural anthropology of Mathura and that of Varshney’s are interlaced." I assumed that the second one was meant to be a plural (Varshneys) rather than a possessive, so I removed the apostrophe; and I changed Mathura to Mathuras to match. I assumed that Mathura referred to the name Mathura, or the Mathura community; now I understand, you meant the city of Mathura. I apologise for that change.
- As for the rest of that edit you would do well to assume good faith and be grateful for any help with copy editing. - Fayenatic (talk) 23:30, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
- As nobody explained why this article should not be split, I have moved most of the content to Sri Akrurji (which is still a mess) and to Mathura, Uttar Pradesh#Culture (which still needs references). This reduced article on Varshney still needs citations too. - Fayenatic (talk) 14:17, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
I have added other spelling variants to this name and made changes to improve the flow and accuracy. For example, the people from this group have mainly gone to Europe, North America and to a few Commonwealth countries (Canada, Australia, etc). They have done so only in the past 70-80 years and not in the past few centuries as was previously stated. (Indian emigration to Western countries only began after 1900s). Have changed traders to business because trade is only a part of the mercantile activities practised by this group; have added landowners and former zameendars. (Some of the descendants of these families are still involved in farming, mostly in U.P.)--Medialogic (talk) 12:40, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
If anyone reading this can explain the connection with Vrishni, please see Talk:Vrishni#Vrishni and Varshney and comment there. - Fayenatic (talk) 12:19, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Shri Varshney College, Aligarh
editJai Narain Varshney, a prominent social activist, educationist and political leader of Varshney community was born on 13th March 1911 and expired on 7th February, 1983. He earned his MSc degree from Allahabad University in 1934 and probably was the first Science Post Graduate among Varshneys though there were scores of advocates and Arts Post Graduates in the community during that period. He had come in contact with revolutionary figures like Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Rajguru, Sukhdev etc. while in High School in 1927 when he was just 16 years old. Later while in the Allahabad University he was inspired by national leaders like Madan Mohan Malviya, Moti Lal Nehru, Purushottam Das Tandon and Jawahar Lal Nehru. After completing his University education, he started Varnish and Paints business at Aligarh, but had no real inclination towards it. His real interest was national freedom movement. He was Aligarh City Congress Secretary for three years when national freedom movement was at its peak in early forties. For making fiery speeches during Quit India Movement against British colonialists, he was arrested on 9th August, 1942. Case No. D 22 U/S 38 I.D.R. was instituted against him and was tried in the Court of S.G.D. Ahmad, I.C.S. Magistrate First Class at Aligarh. He was sentenced to seven months R.I. on 08.10.42 and was released on 17.04.43, but detained u/s 129 D.I.R. He was finally released on 26.10.43 by order of the D.M. He had deep interest in promotion of education. He remained Manager and Chief Minister of DAV Inter College, Aligarh for 12 years. Remained the first Founding Secretary and Manager for 5 years for Bahjoyee Inter College and lastly he helped founding Shri Varshney Degree College at Aligarh in 1949. He is counted among the five prominent Varshney leaders of that time; the other four were Ishwar Das Varshney (the father of glass industry in India), Mishri Lal Advocate, kanhaiya lal gupta and Banke Lal Gupta who instituted the first degree college of the Varshney community. It is pertinent to mention that there were few colleges of modern education in India that time and literacy rate was very low. Communities were starting their own colleges by seeking donation from each one who was willing to give. This may also be mentioned that today Shri Varshney Degree College is one of the most reputed colleges affiliated to Baba Ambedkar University (earlier known as Agra University). VeeCeeVee (talk) 18:13, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
- I have removed this from the article for now. Please check the notability requirements at WP:BIO and the need for "reliable sources" before adding it again. If the college has such a high reputation, it should be possible to find independent evidence of this and then create an article for it. - Fayenatic (talk) 17:47, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
Sources
edit@Varshneysmaj: The content you are adding is either unsourced or pooly sourced:
Fake references
- "first recorded in the Mahābhārata" -- fake reference, Mahabharata does not say their name is derived from "Varshneya"
- "Royalty-turned-Businessmen ...": the source cited (Paul R. Brass) does not state anything like this
- "...were substantial landowners": the source cited (William Crook) does not support this
- "cultural anthropology... Mathura": the source cited (Fredrick Pargiter, p. 98) does not even mention Varshneys
Vrishni Kul Katha is a caste-affiliated publication full of mythical pseudo-history, and not considered even remotely reliable by Wikipedia's standards. The rest of the content added by you is unsourced. utcursch | talk 04:15, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
Oh pardon us for getting the references mixed up. It says up there in the cite option to add reference. But when i did i was typing simultaneously i thought it appears in the reference option in the bottom and that was it. Give me some time to learn how this works and we shall ascertain the claims with proper references.
