Population statistics
editVasco is not Goa's largest town. Margao is definitely larger. Could you cite the source for this claim. Also you can't call Vasco a city. There are only two main streets. The population of 100,000 is credible only if you include Mormugao, Mangor, Chicalim, New Vaddem and Zuarinagar, all of which are outside town limits. The result of the proposal was not moved. Would need evidence that after the name change (if that indeed happened at all other than in a bureaucratic entry, unbeknownst to the residents), it was being called that as the common name, though we would give more weight to sources written after the name change.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 14:48, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
Vasco da Gama, Goa → Sambhaji, Goa – It appears that Vasco Da Gama was already officially renamed as Sambhaji in 1971. Present government is implementing that decision[1] Sarvagyana guru (talk) 02:25, 6 December 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose - would need to see 2010-2015 print sources confirming this in now the WP:COMMONNAME In ictu oculi (talk) 09:42, 6 December 2015 (UTC)
- comment. Not that easy to find, because it tends to get buried under the pages about the historical events. Follows a couple interesting references (unsure if reliable). A report from 1997 to "Rename Vasco as Sambhaji Nagar, demand agitators" (rediff.com, 1997), that is, apparently even those in favor of changing the name believed it was not changed by 1997. Also, "Will Goa's Vasco da Gama town go the Sambhaji Nagar way?" (oneindia.com, 2015) reads that Vaso da Gama "was once briefly called Sambhaji Nagar, according to Goa Speaker Rajendra Arlekar who has now called for indigenisation of the names of places with a foreign legacy". Tangentially related, Aurangabad, Maharashtra also decided to be "... renamed Sambhajinagar" (thaindian.com, 2011), but seems not to get accepted at state level, so there are still requests to get "... Aurangabad renamed to Sambhaji Naga" (economictimes.indiatimes.com, 2015). So, it looks like it is too soon to move. - Nabla (talk) 19:00, 6 December 2015 (UTC)
