challenged Einstein’s theory
editThis says he "challenged Einstein’s theory". What was it? I think it is just a journalistic inflation in the cause of improving a story. If additional information is available, please help. -Nizil (talk) 14:53, 15 November 2019 (UTC)
- After some research, it turned out that the story is later addition. Some additional discussion. -Nizil (talk) 05:25, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
Mathematician vs Academic
editI have described him as an academic instead of a mathematician because it seems that he has not contributed any significant thing to mathematics. News coverage often described him as a mathematician but it looks like it was done to inflate the news story. He is best described as an academic instead. I think he was widely covered in the news due to his prodigal past, mental illness, tragic life, lost and found event etc. instead of his academic or mathematics career. His story was a typical "story of genius who had a bad luck". Regards, -Nizil (talk) 16:36, 15 November 2019 (UTC)
- Previous deletion (2006) made me think what makes person notable? It is still somewhat unclear. Nizil (talk) 16:48, 15 November 2019 (UTC)
- He was cremated with state funeral and state chief minister and prime minister had expressed grief as per ETIT. I think he may fail WP:PROF but pass WP:SIGCOV. He became known not for his "accomplishments" but for his "circumstances" IMO.-Nizil (talk) 04:19, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
- This is some non-sensational real coverage on him: ET. His myths are clarified here. -Nizil (talk) 04:30, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
- Now he is awarded Padma Shri (2020). His notability is firmly established now. -Nizil (talk) 07:52, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

Birthdate
editThe birthdate is doubtful. News18 says he died at the age 74, ET 72, IT/ET says 74 but date is listed as 2 April 1942 (used in article) so he must be 77 according to it. So I am removing the birthdate and write 1940s.-Nizil (talk) 05:01, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
- This source say 2 April 1946 which aligns with common 74 years age. -Nizil (talk) 05:49, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
- As of now: 2 April 1946 is added.-Nizil (talk) 07:07, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- But
{{Death date and age|2019|11|14|1946|4|2|df=y}}
(I underlined the 2 April 1946) gives "14 November 2019 (aged 73)" not 74. DMacks (talk) 02:49, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

- @DMacks:, media uses sometime ongoing year and sometime completed years. So there are variations. I have some doubts too but as of now left it as per reference. If more trustworthy source if found, I will change it. Regards, Nizil (talk) 07:22, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
Discussion
editCopied from article insert by an IP @141.155.144.53::There is a lot of misinformation and exaggerated claims about Vashishtha Narayan in the media. For example, the assertion that he worked for NASA and their he could beat computers in computational-speed has absolutely no truth. Also to blame his ex-wife for the onset of his mental illness is totally irresponsible. Vashishtha Narayan appeared to have had great potential. But due to mental illness this potential was not realized. He published only one research paper in Mathematics (as anyone can easily verify), and this paper had almost no impact on the subject. Stories about him can be a case study of myth-making in this century. It is really sad to see that newspapers and magazines have published articles without any fact-checking.
