Lead

edit
  • "The 1952 Games were considered a great step for sports in Venezuela, as the previous Venezuelan delegation had only one athlete." -> who considers this? perhaps rewrite

Background

edit
  • Link 1948 Summer Olympics
  • "Thanks to this win, he was called upon to join the Olympic team" -> who called upon him to join, since the VOC was resistant?
  • "However, his coach, Ladislao Lazar, said that he would not allow any of his athletes to compete at Helsinki if Devonish was not on the team." -> Prior to the Games, his coach, Ladislao Lazar, said that he would not allow any of his athletes to compete at Helsinki if Devonish was not on the team.

Medalists

edit
  • 1952 Games's -> 1952 Games'

Opening ceremony

edit
  • Looks okay

Competitors

edit
  • On only four occasions has the country not included female athletes, in 1948 and 1956 (the Games immediately before and after this instance), and later in 1968 and 1980. -> Link the years to the relevant Venezuela at the... pages
  • Link Communist countries

Aquatics

edit
  • All other sports except Swimming have a background of the sport
  • Link trampolining

Athletics

edit
  • "In the 110 metres hurdles, athletes were drawn in 6 heats" -> change 6 to six
  • "In the final round, athletes had three attempts to clear several ascending mark barriers." -> change had to have
  • What do the various "also recorded as" comments mean? Is there dispute about the actual times?

Boxing

edit
  • Looks okay

Cycling

edit
  • Looks okay

Fencing

edit
  • Looks okay

Shooting

edit
  • Event titles should be non-capitalised in table and section headings (e.g. "Rapid Fire Pistol, 25 metres" -> Rapid fire pistol, 25 metres etc.)

Wrestling

edit
  • "losing to the Canadian Bernard" -> losing to the Canadian Armand Bernard

References

edit
  • The following is not mandatory for GA, and will not affect the passing of this nomination, however I would strongly recommend archiving each citation you have used (you can use the Wayback Machine for this). My personal opinion is that this is best practice to ensure link rot is not an issue in the future.

Overall comments

Just need to fix up some of the prose and I am happy to pass, good job! — Allied45 (talk) 01:50, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Allied45: I've done up the article, and have tried to get IABot to add archives, it doesn't seem to want to do that, so I'll try again soon. Other than that, it should be good. Kingsif (talk) 02:42, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Kingsif: Looks good overall! I think you may have missed the comments for the "Athletics" section though :) — Allied45 (talk) 09:16, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Allied45: Yes, I did miss those - done now. The 'also recorded as' isn't about a dispute, it's because of the vaguely inaccurate ways they were recorded, which I believe was using multiple stop clocks that didn't always match. Kingsif (talk) 15:47, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Okay this all looks good (I have made minor adjustments to the lead so it flows better). Since everything I raised is now addressed, I am happy to pass this nomination. Allied45 (talk) 00:13, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Devonish's bronze medal-winning jump
  • ... that Venezuela won its first Olympic medal in 1952 with triple jumper Asnoldo Devonish (winning jump pictured), who was almost not on the team and competed injured? Source: "You are strongly encouraged to quote the source text supporting each hook" (and [link] the source, or cite it briefly without using citation templates)
  • Reviewed: Kaschlan
  • Comment: Happy to consider other hooks, but it has to be the most incredible thing about the subject, and has a photo!

Improved to Good Article status by Kingsif (talk). Self-nominated at 00:37, 17 April 2020 (UTC).Reply

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited:   - ?
  • Interesting:   - ?
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
QPQ: Done.

Overall:   Article was promoted to GA status on April 17, and nominated the same day. Length, sourcing and tone are adequate. No plagiarism issues detected. The proposed hook has interesting potential, but should be shortened. Is it necessary for the hook to say "who was almost not on the team"? I agree saying bronze medal in the hook is not needed, and let the reader find out by clicking the link. Images in the article are freely licensed on the commons. The photo in this nomination is discernable at a low resolution, but quite blurry when at its full size. QPQ requirements are met. Flibirigit (talk) 01:57, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • @Flibirigit: I don't mind if the hook doesn't mention that he was almost not on the team, since competing injured is impressive by itself. Is there an issue with the sourcing, since you've left that open? Re. image quality - I also think it looks good at thumb size (and MP size), and don't think there's a better version (blurriness of TV in 1952 is sadly a problem we cannot fix). Kingsif (talk) 02:06, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • I have struck the original hook for being too long, but I like its general gist. Please propose a shorter hook along the same intent, and I will be happy to review the hook and its source. Cheers. Flibirigit (talk) 02:10, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • I have reviewed the hook and declined it. I am not contesting the character count of 200, I feel there are too many unneeded words to make it interesting. I have struck the hook again. Please propose another snappier hook. Flibirigit (talk) 03:51, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  •   ALT0a is approved. The hook is short and snappy and appealing to a broad audience. It is mentioned as a combination of two separate statements both of which are properly cited with this source. Contents verified in Spanish. Article adheres to all other DYK criteria. Use of the photo is up to the promoter, please see comments above. Flibirigit (talk) 04:38, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Potential images

edit

I've found this image of Vicente Matute boxing Erkki Pakkanen at the Games, and this image of Devonish jumping. They should be free to use now, but they're in the Sports Museum of Finland collection and seem to be pretty restricted. We might be able to find another version or contact them about releasing the pictures, but since they still charge for distribution at the moment it might have to be a future endeavor.
