Several more citations are needed in this section to support the information given; I have tagged a few places where this is the case. More information should be added to complete this section. In addition, the existing information could be better organized - the information on differential diagnosis, for example, could be moved to be under the diagnosis heading. Causes

Risk factors: Upper airway inflamation (allergic or nonallergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, recurrent upper respiratory infections), Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), severe emotional distress and female gender are all risk factors for VCD. Other factors that put one at risk for VCD include participation in competitive athletics, playing a wind instrument, and experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event related to breathing (such as a near-drowning or life-threatening asthma attack, for example). The information on how to diagnose VCD is incomplete and needs more information. More citations should be added to this section to support the information that is already there. Treatment options to discuss include the following: Behavioral therapy to relax vocal folds, such as vocal exercises, relaxation techniques, breath support, and respiratory retraining therapy; Stress management, such as fostering awareness of triggers, relaxation techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy; Medication; Controlling asthma; and controlling nasal drip or GERD Chrissietheslp (talk) 00:55, 3 October 2016 (UTC)

Epidemiology

Looking at the Katial & Hoyte chapter in Encyclopedia of medical immunology: Volume 3, it seems a variety of different incidence rates have been reported in the literature for different age ranges etc, but that these are probably an underestimate of the true incidence rate. Brugman et al. reported three times as many females as males suffer from VCD, regardless of age bracket. GinnyMae (talk) 20:45, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
