A town of "Volyn"
editPlease, explain what is the town of "Volyn" mentioned next to Volodymyr-Volynskyi. I am not denying the Volyn-town. I just want to know what this is. Thanks, --Irpen
That's a good question. I have another one, about this part: "They are mentioned in the Primary Chronicle as well as by the Bavarian Geographer. According to the latter, the Volhynians had seventy "cities" (fortresses) in the last half of the tenth century." The Bavarian is cited on Wolin: "An mediæval document of ca. 850, called Bavarian Geographer after its anonymous creator, mentions the Slavic tribe of Volinians who then had 70 strongholds (Uelunzani civitates LXX)." This is a place at the Baltic Sea and not a place where East Slavs are supposed to be found. Is there a reference for a town of Volyn in or near present Volynia and for the identity of the Bavarian's Uelunzani and the East Slav tribe? Fransvannes (talk) 13:51, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Next thing: it appears that not Volhynians, but Dulebes were mentioned in the Primary Chronicle. When was the first mention of "Volhynians", if not in the Primary Chronicle and the Bavarian Geographer's list? Fransvannes (talk) 14:37, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- See Wikidata:Q4124479 for the town of Volyn. Joostik (talk) 09:44, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
