Merger proposal
editI propose that the page West African Nations Cup be merged into this page. They are essentially the same tournament, organized by the West African Football Union. The tournament was played in the 80s, and then was disrupted for more than 10 years. It came back in 2001, postponed to 2002, and was canceled eventually due to unrest in Ivory Coast.
2001 details in RSSSF FootballStatWhore (talk) 20:40, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Comment - So what are you saying? This is just the same tournament by a different name because it is now sanctioned by the West African Football Union? If so, then I support the merger, but I'll need evidence. – PeeJay 18:04, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
- I was wrong. It seems that WAFU (West African Football Union) deemed the 2010 edition as the first edition, and the 2011 edition as the second.
- In this BBC article, it says the 2010 edition was the first edition. In this article, it says the 2011 edition was the second. In this CAF article, it indicates that the 2010 edition was the first edition. So WAFU Nations Cup and the West African Nations Cup are indeed separate tournaments; the former is not a successor of the later.
- HOWEVER, having said these, this article needs to be re-written. As indicated in the second paragraph, the tournament traces back to 1974, which is essentially impossible. Here's the timeline: 1974 a so-callled WAFU Cup; 1983-91 CEDEAO Cup; 1982-87 West African Nations Cup; 2010-11 WAFU Nations Cup. So the 1974 tournament is at most the predecessor of the West African Nations Cup (1982-87), not WAFU Nations Cup (2010s). If we do mention the 1974 tournament, we should clearly indicate that it is not considered as part of the modern-day WAFU Nations Cup. FootballStatWhore (talk) 08:57, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
Teams consisting only of local league players?
editIt seems this tournament isn't competed by "A" national teams but by teams consisting only of local league players. Could anyone confirm this? If that's actually the case, then this should be told in the introduction of the article. Metropolitan (talk) 15:54, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
