* ... that the manager of WVSS at the University of Wisconsin–Stout spent $6,000 of his own money to buy more than 500 classical music CDs to program the station?

5x expanded by Sammi Brie (talk). Self-nominated at 23:09, 31 May 2021 (UTC).Reply

I don't have time to do a full review, but I will do a thorough check tomorrow of verificiation/copyright/neutrality. Otherwise, article was expanded within the last 7 days of nomination (363 bytes -> 2003 bytes), longer than 1500 bytes, has an interesting hook, hook is less than 200 characters and QPQ is provided. Rest of the review will come tomorrow :) --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:43, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

  •   Checking through this article, I have a list of issues that need addressing for fixing. Most are verification issues.
  • "a university committee had been researching the idea of a station" - suggest dropping the word university as Stoutonia doesn't mention the type of committee. You also stated Stout State was a university earlier in the sentence, so it's redundant. Y
  • "WVSS went on air in the fall of 1970, initially operating for seven hours a day." - Original Research issue with the word "initially". It suggests that the radio station started at seven hours a day, then later changed. However, The Dunn County News doesn't specify a change in hours, only that it was on air for 7 hours weekly when it started in 1970. Either a source is needed to show the change of hours (if that is the case), or the word "initially" can be dropped for accuracy.  Not done
  • "The studios were located in the former Central Elementary School" - Original Research issue as Stoutonia 1968 was written before the 1970 launch. This also contradicts with The Dunn County News which says it was held in Stout State's communications basement. It could be the same place, but a source would be needed to show that the Central Elementary School became the Stout State University's school of communications. Otherwise, you could swap this out with what The Dunn County News says in 1970.  Not done
  • "Broadcasts were upgraded to stereo in December 1975" - Similar issue. Stoutonia 1975 was written before the upgrade was to happen. Either a source is needed to show that it did happen in December 1975, or the sentence would need rewriting to state that it was scheduled to happen then.  Not done
  • "student programming from UW–Stout moved to a cable system as "C-Rock"" - Yes. However, only Stoutonia 1989 mentions C-Rock, and not The Leader-Telegram 1988. Either the entire sentence can be bundled with the two citations, or the C-Rock part can be cited with Stoutonia 1989. Y
  • "The station manager, Arthur "Ace" Matthews," - The Dunn County News 1988 says he's general manager of the station, not manager. Y
    • "Matthews spent $6,000 of his own money on a collection of some 540 classical music CDs" - almost correct. The Dunn County News 1988 said it was exactly 540 CDs, totally around $6,000, but not exactly $6,000. Y
  • Per above, the hook is inaccurate with $6,000. Should be around $6,000, not exactly $6,000.  Not done
  • "went silent for seven months in the spring of 1990" Per MOS:SEASON, spring should be swapped/dropped. Either you could state when they went off the air or when they came back. Y
  • "The changes came at a time when WPR was restructuring into two program services but only had one transmitter to cover western Wisconsin" - Original Research as this is from The Leader-Telegram 1988, while WVSS was still on the air before the 7-month silence in 1990. The article does mention that WVSS had swapped over to cable rock & classical music, so this part could be reorganized there. However, see next point below. Y
    • Also, the article talks about a possibility about making two radio stations, but that hadn't happened yet, making this Original Research too.  Not sure
  • "The site change was mutually exclusive with an application by WVCY" - sorta. 1995 Leader-Telegram says Wisconsin Voice of Christian Youth filed the application. While they own WVCY, 1995 Leader-Telegram doesn't specifically state WVCY was the filing station. Y
  • There's lots of Original Research in the Infobox in each of the sections. These need citations since they're not stated in the prose.  Not done
    • National Public Broadcasting Archives says WVSS was named after Vocational Stout State, not Voice of Stout State.  Not sure
  • A lot of the prose mentioned in the lead in not mentioned at all in the history section. They need inclusion per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section. I suggest rewriting this part to match what's in the history section while also including that this station is in Menomonie in the history section.  Not done

Overall, there's a lot of Original Research issues (some minor tweaks / some major issues), 1 minor word for word copy and a slight inaccuracy with the hook. As most of the criteria passes, I'm willing to keep this open so you can fix these issues. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:51, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • @MrLinkinPark333: Just made a bunch more improvements that should address almost everything. Tech info in the infobox would come straight from the public information at the FCC; the call sign meaning, though, was pretty off and came from a bad source. Nothing says "vocational" anywhere. One source from 1978 says "We're Volunteers Serving Stout", which I strongly doubt as even the 1968 source has "Voice of Stout State" near the call letters. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 22:38, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Sammi Brie: These issues are still there. Also, just noticed that "WVSS went on air in the fall of 1970" should be addressed as well per MOS:SEASON as well --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:54, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@MrLinkinPark333: that'd be because I forgot to actually submit the edit... try now. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 00:14, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Sammi Brie: No worries! Per above, some of these parts aren't done that I tagged as not done:
  • "initially operating for seven hours a day; this soon expanded, and the station broadcast from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. by 1980" - not an expansion as it was previously 6 pm to 1 am (7 hours). Therefore, "initially" doesnt work here either. Y
  • 7am to 2am is not 7 hours in this case, it's 19.
Whoops. Miscalculated XD NVM! --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 02:13, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • "in the basement of the former Central Elementary School" - yes/no. Sources say the studio would be held in the previous Central Elementary School, but none specifically state that. Closest I see is Stoutonia 1978, but it calls it a "grade school".
  • Added a yearbook source that should provide the connective tissue you are looking for. Y
  • "Broadcasts were upgraded to stereo in December 1975" - Stoutonia 1978 does say it was upgraded in 1975, but not a specific month. You could drop the month to make it easier if it's not specifically stated after the upgrade happened.   Done
  • "but only had one transmitter to cover western Wisconsin" - I'm not seeing this part in Dunn County News 1990 or Leader-Telegram 1988. Am I missing it?  Done
  • Paragraph 5 of the latter:

"Our problem is that in some parts of the state we have two stations and in your part of the state we have one."

I did read that, but I thought transmitter wasn't the same as radio station. But since there is transmitter station, it makes sense. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 02:13, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Stoutonia 1980 does state Voice of Stout State but doesn't have state it was the former name of the university.   Done
  • Lead is written is the present tense (90.7 in Menomonie, airs NPR + classical news, local WPR in Eau Clair, joining WPR) but none is verified.   Done
  • Infobox still has issues of parts uncited. Technical information, History, Ownership, Programming. If you do mention any of it in the prose, it'll be fine not citing it in the infobox.
  • Typically with US radio pages, these items don't contain inline citations — they can be verified from the FCC record. The citation I just added to paragraph 1 should cover the non-technical stuff.
  • Hook needs to be tweaked to about $6,000.   Done

--MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 01:24, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

I have addressed everything with the exception of the technical information area, MrLinkinPark333. I've never seen an inline citation in there for an active US station with a current FCC record. (I do have one citation per technical section for a defunct station, since I have to cite a book, and for Mexican pages there's a blanket citation template that sometimes is replaced with a direct link to a PDF.) This would be a very large policy change affecting a lot of pages—there are more than 14,000 transclusions of this infobox for US stations! Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 01:54, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sammi Brie Okay. Only thing is the lead which isn't 100% accurate with "consisting of classical music and news and talk programming, as well as local news from WPR's regional studio in Eau Claire", which is not backed up with WPR. As for the infobox, I guess I'll leave it be. Once the lead is fixed (I also suggest incorporating this part into the history after rewrite), it'll be good to go. Wasn't expecting this many isssues loL! --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 02:13, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@MrLinkinPark333: Lead fixed. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 04:49, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Sammi Brie: Lead is still an issue, especially if I compare to WVSS's schedule. I suggest either dropping "consisting of classical music and news and talk programming," or describe using the WVSS's schedule. "NPR News and Music Network" is descriptive enough. Though if you want to add talk programming, more sources are needed as the schedule isn't descriptive enough to show Fresh Air, for example, is a talk program without clicking on the individual program pages. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 18:50, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Just a thought on the hook, nothing about it portrays how the station has evolved from such lowly beginnings. Something like "DYK... that multi-Marconi Award-winning station/Wisconsin's number 1 radio station/ WVSS which once received <CDs the manager paid for>, now has more than 50,000 items in its collection?" something to show how the station has grown, or how it's relied on those 500 CDs for over 50 years... Bogger (talk) 20:57, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Bogger: Appreciate the thought, but there's nothing really associated with this station directly except the transmitter because it's been subsumed into a much, much larger network. @MrLinkinPark333: I don't want to duplicate information in this article that would be in Wisconsin Public Radio#NPR News & Music Network. When I write articles about radio stations that repeat a larger network and that service has a section/article of its own, that content belongs there; I've added a short Programming section that hopefully addresses the concern once and for all. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 00:53, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Sammi Brie: I still see OR issues with the Programming section, which fails verification. Only things I see supported are "Morning Edition and All Things Considered" and "classical music during the day and at night". The rest is not supported by WVSS at wpr.org. Since you're citing the schedule, I highly recommend describing what's in the schedule that you can see there without having to click on any of the programs. A lot of these descriptions can not be verified by WVSS alone. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 01:23, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@MrLinkinPark333: Alright, this better be it. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 03:51, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Sammi Brie: ALT1 now approved. Congrats from saving this from prod! --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 16:38, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
