Wa or Va
editshouldnt it list the spelling of Va used by China in English media — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.202.218.94 (talk) 06:44, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

editThe article needs to give the name of their language.
Gringo300 08:05, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- yes, it also needs to outline the fact that they are not only a Chinese ethnic minority but one of the national ethnic minorities of Burma - this information has to go beyond drug trade and armed rebeliion, as that is more of a reductionist point of view that does not take into account the cultural and historical background of this group in Burma. I'm working on this, but it might be a while until I get to this article, so if someone else wants to go for it, that's great. --Xiu Xiu 12:20, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
blackface controversy
editHan Chinese cultural appropriation and donning 'blackface' from the Va people http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/201805/05/WS5aecdee8a3105cdcf651c17a_4.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.202.218.94 (talk) 04:29, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
Flag
editWhat exactly is the status of the flag that was added to the article? Is ist the flag of an administrative division, a political organisation? The byline is no sufficient explanation. —Babelfisch 03:10, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- The byline was changed to "Flag of the de facto Wa State in Myanmar". That's not much better. The Wa State seems to have been merged with the Shan State after independence. Did the flag have official status before that merger? What does it stand for today? The question of the status of the flag is not really answered by the new byline. —Babelfisch 01:13, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- No answer, flag removed. —Babelfisch 01:00, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Regarding the line "The Wa were once known as the "Wild Wa" by the British due to their practice of headhunting.[4]," the source doesn't actually support that.

The result of the move request was: move. -- tariqabjotu 04:42, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
Va people → Wa people – These people are usually called "Wa". Almost all reliable sources refer to them as the "Wa", and so do other articles pertaining to them on Wikipedia. In fact, this article was originally at Wa, but someone unilaterally moved many years ago. For whatever reason, I can’t find the actually move, but I see it in the edit summaries and the change in text from "Wa" to "Va". - It would run into a disambiguation issue. The Japanese people was in the past called the Wa. --Article editor (talk) 23:50, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
- That's not a valid reason to ignore convention/reliable sources….and it's easy to remedy with a WP:Hatnote.--William Thweatt TalkContribs 00:24, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

- comment When referring to the old term Wa for Japanese people, one usually uses the term Wajin, or the more modern Yamato, which comes from the same root. No one calls them the "Wa people", though the early Japanese state was known as Wa. RGloucester (talk) 02:54, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

- Support "Wa" is better both for internal consistency (to match all the other articles mentioning the language or the people) and for consistency with most, if not all, of the source material which refer to the language and the people as "Wa". The move to "Va people" was done unilaterally with no reasons given and no sources to support such a move.--William Thweatt TalkContribs 17:20, 14 July 2013 (UTC)
- Support Wa is far more common than Va. Encyclopedia Britannica uses Wa, see here. -Zanhe (talk) 17:36, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
- Support per WP:UCN (use common names). Sources overwhelmingly use "Wa" as do derivative entities (e.g., Wa State, Wa language). — AjaxSmack 04:44, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- Comment The name "Wa" is used in wikipedia articles United Wa State Army, United Wa State Party, Wa Self-Administered Division, Wa State, Wa language. PhyoWP *click 23:31, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
