Rewrite?
editThis article needs to back to the basics, because little of it is useful.
- who were the combatents?
- what did each side want?
- what historical figures participated, if any, and what were their roles?
- what specific event triggered the conflict?
- in case of civil disorder, why didn't the government and/or military intervene?
- what was the result?
- what significance did the conflict have for later history of the region?
The Background section going back to the Iberian Union and Dutch occupation, is largely irrelevant Sbalfour (talk) 23:56, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
The Conflict section names
editNot only is this section incomprehensible, like all the rest, but none of the place or person names is elaborated - why were they important, what did they actually do, or what happened there? That there aren't articles in the wiki for them testifies to their insignificance. The wikilink for Sao Lourenco, apparently valid, points to a disambiguation page, where nothing looks likely. The one wikilink that's valid, Vitória de Santo, says hostilities commenced there - they did NOT: the loyalist forces refused to fight, arrested their own commander, and joined the rebels. Whoever wrote this, probably Google searched the web for Peddlers War, and dropped in any names that turned up associated with it. That's how we got to where we are, with details but no substance. That's not elucidating history - that's conveying ignorance. I think the entire needs to be deleted, until some editor who actually knows the history, writes something that makes sense.Sbalfour (talk) 15:51, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
lords of Olinda?
editThe article twice mentions "lords of Olinda". Were they indeed, Lords, members of the royal court of Portugal with hereditary titles of nobility? This is dubious hyperbole at best, false and deceiving at worst.Sbalfour (talk) 17:46, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
rewrite
editWell, I plan to go ahead with a rewrite. (Although progress will be slow until I get my taxes done.P2dwight (talk) 19:37, 7 February 2021 (UTC) While my other editing related to Pernambuco leads me to believe no one is currently paying any attention to articles about Pernambuco. I have decided to start by just pasting in what I wrote over in Captaincy of Pernambuco. Then I will expand a little here and excise a bit from the section in the Captaincy of Pernambuco. The current writing says it is based on two writers, C. R. Boxer and Frei Joaquim do Amor Divino Caneca. Since I don't have access to the latter I am dependent on Boxer, whose book has a chapter related to the Mascate war. If anyone does look and decides to revert that's fine. Fianlly I will go try to make sure that the revised article addresses the concerns mentioned above.P2dwight (talk) 20:34, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
