Plot too much or too little
editWP:FILMPLOT recommends a plot section of 400-700 words.
The plot section has been tagged for being as too long for years, but despite a little over 700 words and being tagged for being too long someone made it even longer, expanding it to over 800 words.[1] Another editor made a good faith effort to rewrite the plot summary, severely shortening it[2] down to a mere 263 words which is frankly too short. I hesitate to restore the long version but a slightly overlong plot section with a little too much detail is more helpful to readers than a too short plot section with not enough information. -- 109.78.196.169 (talk) 12:38, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- User:Missbellanash does not seem to be familiar with WP:FILMPLOT and has twice reverted the {{more plot}} tag. Also Missbellanash has not included an edit summary to explain either.[3]
- At this point I am confident the article would be best improved by restoring the slightly too long plot summary instead of keeping the excessively short version. I will give it a bit more time in the hope that maybe someone else will discuss it. -- 109.77.207.153 (talk) 23:17, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
- Don't start an edit war, since you don't know what you're doing the best thing is to move on to something different. The plot of this movie was complicated by design an overly LONG and DETAILED summary destroys it, such a summary is not desired per THESE (and more) - wiki guides.
- See plot summary is an overview of the film's main events, so avoid minutiae like dialogue, scene-by-scene breakdowns, individual jokes, and technical detail. Do not include actors' names in the plot summary, as it is considered redundant to the "Cast" section.
- As Wikipedia's policy on primary sources says, "... a primary source may be used only to make descriptive claims, the accuracy of which is verifiable by a reasonable, educated person without specialist knowledge ... Do not make analytic, synthetic, interpretive, explanatory, or evaluative claims about information found in a primary source." Provided the film is publicly available, citing the film explicitly in the plot summary's section is not necessary, since the film is the primary source and the infobox provides details about the film

- There's no need to rude. You accused me of edit warring but you repeatedly reverted my changes without any explanation WP:3RR. You did not follow the WP:SIMPLE rules and did not explain your changes with a meaningful edit summaries, repeatedly removing the {{More plot}} tag. If you are accusing me of edit warring you must know about WP:BRD, BOLD, REVERT, DISCUSS, but until I specifically asked you on your User page you made no effort to discuss until now.
- The project film guidelines WP:FILMPLOT recommend that the plot section be 400-700 words. Missbellanash reduced the plot section from approximately 800 words (as of May 17, 2021) to a mere 230 words. Instead of accusing me please explain why did you shorten it so far below the 400 words recommended? Why did you make the plot section so short and uninformative? Why are you quoting the WP:FILMPLOT guidelines but ignoring the length those very same guidelines recommend?
- Missbellanash wrote: "an overly LONG and DETAILED summary destroys it," and although I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "destroys it" because a plot summary should be as complete as possible, and information should not be left out. Readers should know that the plot section will contain the plot, the full plot including the ending and there will be spoilers! An encyclopaedia should provide the whole plot so that readers do not need to ever watch the film if they don't want to, and that's not destroying, that's giving readers information and freedom to choose for themselves to read it or not.
- I would like other Wikipedia editors to follow the Project Film guidelines and restore the plot section to something closer to 400-700 words. A slightly too long summary is better than an excessively short summary. I propose restoring the Plot section to the version from April 2018 that was 736 words long. -- 109.76.200.55 (talk) 05:38, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- Stop being rude yourself. That long version will not be used. Stop. "Edit-warring over style, or enforcing optional style in a bot-like fashion without prior consensus, is never acceptabl"
- I do not owe you an explanation for where I have been or what I have been doing. "A slightly too long summary is better than an excessively short summary." The idea is wrong and I have explained that a longer summary is unwarranted and is exactly what Wikipedia warns against also, relevant text has been placed on THIS PAGE, by myself. It's nice that you've finally found WP:FILMPLOT now please stop the badgering. Missbellanash (talk) 06:31, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- IP editor read Wikipedia article on spoilers "This page documents an English Wikipedia content guideline. It is a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense, and occasional exceptions may apply." - You accused me of edit warring, that was what I found rude. It is unclear what you think I said that was rude or even impolite. I did not say you owe an explanation, I'm merely asking you to discuss your changes. I don't think it is unreasonable to ask why you have made the plot summary so very short. "I have explained that a longer summary is unwarranted" you pointed at the guidelines, I don't think that explains at all why you think a very short plot summary (far shorter than the guidelines recommend) is appropriate.
- "That long version will not be used." If you are only going to make declarations and unwilling to discuss then I'm going to have to ask for other opinions WP:3RD. -- 109.76.200.55 (talk) 23:04, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- I got other opinions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Film/Archive_78#Very_short_plot_section It was a while ago and I had other things to do, but I have added a Plot section that is just under 700 words, based on an older version of the plot section.[4] -- 109.79.69.204 (talk) 22:31, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
