Improvements needed
editThis article is currently unbalanced. Examples:
- Some street names are referenced (Torvill & Dean estate & Tom Bowers Close), but not others which may have more significance (Sutton Passeys Crescent, named after a Deserted Medieval Village within the bounds of the area recognised as Wollaton, Smythson Drive named after Robert Smythson a pioneer architect who is buried in Wollaton). These may be suitable for reference in articles on Jayne Torvill et al., but I do not think they are noteworthy enough for the Wollaton article.
- Extensive information on local football clubs, but not other sporting bodies or associations (such as the William Wright Institute, Wollaton Natural History Society, etc.)
- Some, but not all schools, are mentioned: Bluecoat (Wollaton Park campus), Middleton and Firbeck Primary Schools are missing.
- Non-neutral POV in describing 'desirable area to live. Should be replaced by referable information on demographics and demographic profile. Also incorrect, as Wollaton was already a more expensive suburb before the M1 and improvements to A52. No evidence for employment of population or commuter patterns. Use of census, Land Registry data and open geo-demographics would all help improve this section.
- No history of Wollaton as a place prior to circa 1950. As one of the earliest sites of significant industrial activity (coal mining, early railways etc.,) and a place mentioned in Domesday book, much more could be made of this. A history section is essential.
- Much of the material on Wollaton Park & Wollaton Hall belongs in those articles. Too much emphasis is placed on infrequent events (such as Splendour in the Park) which in many cases are probably not notable.
- Details of individual bus routes is unlikely to be genuinely encyclopaedic. Experience shows these are prone to change. The canal, railways & buses can be grouped together with roads under a transport section.
One particular problem which is difficult to treat is the actual bounds of Wollaton. The original bounds to 1933 are clearly that of the parish. Substantial sections N of the railway line would now not be called Wollaton. The Wollaton Park estate is also only marginally Wollaton, historically being largely in Lenton, and residents are unlikely to describe themselves as living in Wollaton. Probably best to split description into a number of sub-areas: Balloon Woods, Wollaton Vale, Wollaton Village, Wollaton Park, and Wollaton Park Estate. This still leaves areas N of Wollaton Road, Russell Drive, Trowell Road lacking good descriptors.
It also needs better illustrations. Semudobia (talk) 21:04, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
