Maggie Gyllenhaal and her role

The wife of a September 11th victim convinced Maggie Gyllenhaal to star in Oliver Stone's World Trade Center, despite comments the actress made about America's 'responsibility' for the terrorist attack last year. The Secretary star decided she would have to meet real-life hero Port Authority Officer William Jimeno and his wife Alison - who she plays - to explain her position, and she was ready to drop out of the hard-hitting drama. The movie, which stars Nicolas Cage, is based on the story of William Jimeno and his partner Sergeant John McLoughlin, who became trapped by falling debris as they attempted to rescue the injured. Alison says of Gyllenhaal after she visited her New Jersey home, "Right away, both Will and I felt comfortable with her and realized how sincere and passionate she is. Controversy

Given there are at least 9,000 people that are either parents, partner, or siblings to the people who were killed on 9/11, holding up 3 of them without showing the other side gives undue weight, which is against the rules. There's a passage stating 'The film also can be interpreted as implying that officer Dominick Pezzulo committed suicide, when in fact he fired straight up to the light to alert rescuers.[11]'. This would be a misinterpretation, since it was clear that the shot fired was to try and attract attention. The film can be interpreted to mean anything if that interpretation is incorrect.

Opinion

Though true, there is hardly ever any attention paid to the volunteers, this is an encyclopedia, not RogerEbert.com. Put it on the discussion page, not in the article. I removed: 'The movie does not portray the thousands of VOLUNTEERS that responded. After the tower fell, it were the Volunteer First Aid Squads from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Upstate New York that handled the initial EMS operations. Nobody ever gives these men and women credit. These are independent non-affiliated standalone EMS organizations that responded that have nothing to do with the FDNY or other Fire Depts. Everyone including the movie only shows "PAID Firefighter" personnel from the FDNY...but completely forget the THOUSANDS of independent Volunteer First Aid Squads that actually did a lot of the immediate EMS work, including EMTs who are not firefighters from FDNY. Tragically, many of the EMT's on the FDNY perished, leaving it up to OUT OF CITY Volunteer Squads. Everyone always seems to ignore this issue and talk about ONLY the Firefighters. The independent Volunteer EMT's who have no Fire Department affiliation were completely excluded in all recognition who actually took up the slack for the EMS work when the FDNY EMT's perished. Also, most of the walking wounded patients from the Ground Zero area were being transported (boat, ambulance, helicopter) to areas in New Jersey (airports, stadiums, parks), and were tended to by NJ Volunteer First Aid Squad EMT's. That part of 9/11 was also forgotten. Hundreds of VOLUNTEER First Aid Squads crossed bridges and tunnels to get to Ground Zero. On a side note, many Volunteer Fire Depts were there too....but it is the Volunteer First Aid Squads from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Upstate NY that were completely forgotten about. This movie forgot about accuracy and authenticity of these Volunteer Squad members in their depiction of the response to the world trade center disaster.'

I just got back from a screening of the movie, and actually, two characters portrayed in the movie (with arguably pivotal roles) were non-paid personnel. One character, Karnes, is a retired Marine Staff Sergeant who drives to NY from Connecticut to volunteer and search for survivors. Another character is an ex-paramedic / recovering addict who helps to medically treat the two main characters. --Gar2chan 06:14, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

X-Clan Boycott

I've removed a reference to a supposed boycott of the movie called for by the rap group X-Clan. This is inflammatory so it absolutely must be properly sourced under WP:RS and WP:V. The only sources I've been shown are a couple of websites. Wikipedia is not the place to spread an Internet rumor.--Mantanmoreland 20:21, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Wide Critical Praise

World Trade Center has a 70% in Rotten Tomatoes, a 66% in Metacritic. I think changing from "Wide" to "Moderate" is more accurate. Just a suggestion...

Questioning the value of the triva section

I question the value of the majority of the trivia section. I don't see how what cartoon someone is watching in the movie, or if the film was a few weeks off on what the trees should look like have any value in an encyclopedic article. People who care about things like that already have imdb -- why do we need to fill this article with useless junk? kenj0418 21:04, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Errors in Overview: Police were assigned to Tower 1, not Tower 2

The Overview section states:

"Sergeant McLoughlin assigns many of the officers to assist in an evacuation attempt of the (still undamaged) South Tower, and they proceed to the Port Authority Bus Station."

and

"officers proceed to get safety equipment and, walk into the lobby of the World Trade Center."

These references appear to be inaccurate --

1. McLoughlin requested volunteers.

2. The request was to evacuate Tower 1, not Tower 2.

3. The officers including Will Jimeno were already at the bus station on routine patrol and proceeded FROM the bus station, not toward it.

4. The officers are not shown entering the lobby of either tower, though they come close.

Details:

McLoughlin remained focused on reaching Tower 1 throughout the early scenes of the movie. They take an apparently commandeered public bus from the PA Bus Station or vicinity to the World Trade Center. During the bus ride, there is some talk of a second plane, but the officers cannot clearly see Tower 2 through the smoke of Tower 1 and the question is unresolved. After collecting equipment at a police depot at Building 5, the officers take an elevator to the Concourse.

In order to proceed with the Tower 1 rescue, they must obtain additional equipment from a storage room located on level B-1 from a stairwell located near the Tower 2 lobby. The officers then walk through the Concourse toward the Tower 2 lobby, which they can see through glass doors and windows. While Jimeno remains on the Concourse, the three other officers collect equipment from the unseen depot on level B-1. An officer emerges from the Tower 2 lobby doors and chats briefly with Jimeno on the Concourse, but Jimeno does not think to ask whether something has happened in Tower 2 and he does not ask why the Tower 2 lobby (visible behind glass doors and windows) is full of injured people, though perhaps he suspects the rumors of a second attack were correct.

Upon reuniting, McLoughlin is puzzled as to why police and firefighters are being assigned to Tower 2. Without having entered the Tower 2 lobby, the officers resume walking away from Tower 2 toward their goal of Tower 1. Officer Amoroso joins the group and brings additional rumors of another plane attack as well as some tall tales about Israel being nuked. But McLoughlin is unwavering in his focus on responding to a one-plane attack on Tower 1. When a passing firefighter says he took an hour to climb 30 floors of Tower 1 before being reassigned to Tower 2, McLoughlin asks why and the firefighter says he doesn't know. Then McLoughlin receives a radio message from Inspector Fields, telling him to rendezvous at Barclay Street instead of going direct to Tower 1. McLoughlin asks Fields if something is going on in Tower 2. Before Fields can answer, Tower 2 begins to collapse. Even here, the officers appear initially uncertain whether a part of Tower 2, or the Concourse itself, is collapsing: They look around and see the Concourse ceiling and display windows crumbling before seeing fire and debris flying toward them from Tower 2.

In short...

It would be more accurate to say that "Sgt. McLoughlin requested volunteers for a rescue effort in Tower 1 and proceeded to the World Trade Center."

And it would be more accurate to say they "walk into the Concourse" but not "walk into the lobby." The Concourse was a shopping mall and pedestrian hub, not a lobby for any single building.

Removed the Awards nonsense

I just stumbled onto this article and saw that the film had been awarded the "Online Film Fans Awards" for Best Picture and Best Director. As I've never heard of this award I ran a quick Google check and got only 62 hits for it, all of them articles about this film, which leads me to suspect that they all got it from this Wiki article.

The claim was added on 25 October 2006 by an anonymous editor without any references. I've now removed it. Thomas Blomberg (talk) 09:29, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Merger proposal

Formal request has been received to merge the articles John McLoughlin (police officer), Will Jimeno, Christopher Amoroso, Dominick Pezzulo, Dave Karnes and Jason Thomas into World Trade Center (film); dated: March 2018. Proposer's Rationale: Besides being featured in the movie, there is nothing remarkably notable about any of these men and most of the articles' contents focus on what happened to them during the September 11 attacks, which is basically what was already shown in the movie.
