American vs Moroccan-American

You keep adding to the article that she is Moroccan-American. However, on Wikipedia, the standard format is to list nationality/citizenship of the subject, per MOS:NATIONALITY. So, for example, Henry Ford is listed as American despite having an Irish father and a Belgian mother, not "Irish-American" or "Belgian-American".

Per MOS:CITIZEN; The simplest example is someone who continued to reside in their country of origin:

and then lists Daniel Boone as America, despite the fact that his mother was Welsh and his father was English.

I don't see any indication either in the article or online that Zayda Steel has active Moroccan citizenship, only that her mother is Moroccan. It's possibly that Steel is eligible for Moroccan citizenship, but that doesn't she mean she has it.

Your edit summaries suggest you're adding "Moroccan-American" on the basis of ethnicity, rather than nationality/citizenship. Unless you have a reliable, secondary source stating she hold Moroccan citizenship, Wikipedia guidelines state she should simply be listed as American and categorised as an American of Moroccan descent. I am familiar with MOS:NATIONALITY and MOS:CITIZEN. The inclusion of “Moroccan-American” in the lead is based on MOS:NATIONALITY. As previously noted, individuals of Moroccan descent are considered Moroccan by the Kingdom of Morocco, even if they were born abroad. Moroccan citizenship is not a prerequisite to identify as Moroccan-American; having Moroccan parents, as is the case with Zayda Steel (whose parents are from Guercif), is sufficient in this context and the context of MOS:NATIONALITY. MOS:CITIZEN does not necessarily override that. MOS:NATIONALITY states that nationality should not normally be included in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject’s notoriety. In this case, Zayda Steel’s Moroccan-American background is directly relevant to her notoriety or notability. It has been (for that reason) referenced on AEW Collision broadcasts, and she has publicly expressed and highlighted her Moroccan heritage and culture, including on social media. Additionally, being the only Moroccan-American professional wrestler in a major promotion is a notable and important aspect of her career, which she has also addressed in interviews.

The comparison to Henry Ford is also not very relatable in this instance. While Ford had Belgian maternal grandparents who immigrated to the United States, that ancestry did not meaningfully influence his public identity or notability. The Kingdom of Morocco can consider her whatever they like, that doesn't mean she a Moroccan citizen. Your reply also avoided me noting that you don't have reliable source stating that she is a Moroccan citizen. That's a major fault in your edits. Secondly, Wikipedia articles, and particularly their introductions, go by citizenship and where the subject resides, NOT their ethnicity. Steel doesn't seem to have Moroccan citizenship nor has she ever resided there. There it should default to simply American.

Henry Ford is, in fact, a good example, because during his lifetime he repeatedly played up his Irish roots and kept a factory open in Cork City to show support for Ireland, even when the factory wasn't always profitable. Nevertheless, his Wikipedia simply describes him as American, and certainly his categories reflect that. Your edits and categories infer Steel is a Moroccan born citizen, rather than a American of Moroccan descent. Like Steel, Ford was neither a citizen of any country other than America, nor did he reside outside of the US. Steel, just like Ford, should be categorised as American.

Steel's Moroccan heritage can be discussed in the article, but stating in the lead that she is Moroccan-American and categorising her simply as "Moroccan" rather than of Moroccan descent goes against Wikipedia guidelines and Wikipedia formatting. CeltBrowne (talk) 06:05, 21 February 2026 (UTC)

Please refrain in making assumptions, since my initial message was very clear that the inclusion was based on MOS:NATIONALITY and therefore a valid reason to add Moroccan-American over simply American. People of Moroccan descent = Moroccan, and Steel is jus sanguinis Moroccan. My edits and categories infer that Steel is indeed a Moroccan, which is valid.

In saying that Henry Ford is a good example by first starting about his Belgian descent, only to highlight his Irish-related actions (which still did not contribute to his notoriety or notability) is once again irrelevant in this comparison and context.

The same reasoning has been applied for tons of examples like Red Velvet, Wade Barrett, Amale etc. Steel is not an anomaly in this. Afrique0512 (talk) 15:52, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
