VICNAMES is the Victorian Government's dataset of place names.
Usage
editThis template creates a {{cite web}} citation to individual records in the online database of VICNAMES, a useful searchable reference source on Victoria's place names. It covers cities, towns, suburbs, localities and railway stations as well as geographical features such as mountains, rivers, etc.
Parameters
edit- There are two unnamed parameters
- Place ID number. This is the only mandatory parameter. It can be found at the end of the URL
- Place name. It is optional but really useful to include for the benefit of the reader
For example, the town of Kerang record can be referenced using
{{Cite VICNAMES|101627|Kerang}}
resulting in:
"Kerang (entry 101627)". VICNAMES. Government of Victoria.
- The access date can be specified using the
access-date
fields. - Error checking is not done at all. Specifying an incorrect ID will result in a link to a non-existing record.
Warning Don't confuse Place ID with other IDs displayed on the same page, such as the Vicmap ID or Place Name ID. In some cases editors have used this template with the wrong ID, and ended up linking to the wrong entry or an invalid entry. |
More examples
edit- Use of
access-date
field, for Shelbourne, Victoria:
{{Cite VICNAMES|102723|Shelbourne|access-date=2014-06-11}}
result:
"Shelbourne (entry 102723)". VICNAMES. Government of Victoria. Retrieved 2014-06-11.
